    AGREED that a novel's primary goal should never be to educate-more often than not, it cheapens the true accounts on which the fiction is based and detracts from style. This is why chunky, exposition-heavy historical epics sometimes irk me. Certainly we can learn a lot about geographical and historical settings through fiction, but if that's the entire goal of the work then why make it fiction at all?

    After watching all your book related videos, I noticed that the majority of the books you read have blue covers. Either you unconsciously pick up the blue cover because you like the color or the books you’re looking for/interested in all surprisingly have blue covers. Quite funny and interesting. Looking at my shelves, I definitely choose books With blue covers haha too much for a coincidence.

      @gossip142 Před 5 lety +5

      @@joonbloom I read it years ago and to this day it still remains my favourite classic. I feel like a lot of classic literatures are character driven (at least the ones i've read are) but this one had an enjoyable story/plot as well as having thought provoking interesting characters. Some of my favourite characters in the book were the antagonists of the story :) You should totally pick it up! My copy is full of quotes that i've highlighted/underlined :) Hope Jess picks it for one of her book club reads so that I have an excuse to reread it - i've been meaning to but my TBR list is so long

  • @Veezbell
    @Veezbell Před 5 lety +5

    If you’re interested in Latin American literature you should check out Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel and The Law Of Love by the same author. She’s works with magical realism beautifully and her female characters are quite complex which I find sometimes lacking in latin american writing.

    I still remember reading my assigned chapters of Rebecca in high school every night before I went to sleep and being scared under the covers after I turned my bedside table lamp off. It’s the first book that ever creeped me out, which is a big compliment in my opinion. I really like how the main character isn’t even living during the events of the book but is more present than many main characters in other books.

    Hey Jessie,
    I hope you are well! congratulations on finishing the masters :)
    I think you should continue doing these book videos as they are really useful and interesting to watch. I also would suggest maybe doing more academic based videos, like studying tips, essay writing tips. I know your out of education now but I think you have a lot of experience that could be shared with others and be really valuable to others. I think you will do really well with Literature based videos and these Book videos as I feel like that's what your passionate about and that's what you have knowledge on. Obviously I can't control your content and you can do whatever you want but I just wanted to make these suggestions anyways.
    Thank you so much for making these videos for us, I have been watching for quite a while now and have watched you grow and I'm so excited for what the future holds. Best of luck! :D

    i find it strange in the kind of books you read and enjoy; and do very well to analyse and explain their importance, with topics such as oppression and capitalism and gender etc, yet you are still very much within the capitalist way of life and understanding in your own life if that makes sense? you read these books you say are important to read and to know, yet you stop at that. you don't go out and help change or contribute to what these stories are trying to get across and so on. its quite enigmatic almost? and not necessarily hypocritical, but yeah, you come across as quite an enigma. going on all these holidays and working with all these brands and obviously being wealthy and then talking about very important and poignant topics yet just continuing on with your life as if in a bubble. you should read more into politics and read more about what you can do to actually stop these things such as racism and sexism and not just reading about them. very much so in terms of things like marxism or libertarian socialism and all those sorts in a way to combat capitalism.

      You don’t know what Jess does in her private life related to charity work or activism or whatever. You’re putting a huge judgement on someone you don’t actually know. There is nothing wrong with reading around and talking about various weighty subjects while also enjoying more frivolous things, spending money etc. If she claimed to be some amazing activist and philanthropic person whilst doing those things then yes you could argue that she’s hypocritical, but she doesn’t make any such claims. She just has an interest in various issues and reads a lot.
