  • The arrival of a new Herter's catalog each year was a special time in my household. Herter's knives make for a very interesting branch of knife collecting, especially when you can find a Herter's catalog to go along with them.

I was 14 years old in 1971, and your reminiscing took me back in the day. What a great time in history to grow up it was!

As a kid I carried an old hickory of similar shape. Skinned lots of mule deer with that knife. Thanks for the memories, fun video 👍👍

As a kid I was a big fan of Herters, those catalogs got passed around to the all the guys. The Murphy knife co. still had a few Herters knives just a few years ago.

Cool old knives👍 that skinner pattern goes way back. I.Wilson’ Sheffield made em few centuries back. J. Russell’ made em over here back few centuries ago. I’d love to have that old Herter’s Catalog! -L.L Bean Co. had the same catalog thing going on back in the 30’,40’s,50’s. 🇺🇸

I loved perusing the Herter's catalog back in the day! My dad bought several of the Herter hunting knives as gifts for rancher friends in Wyoming that he used to visit for elk hunting season.

I also have both of those knives -- also bought when I was a kid. I loved Herter's. I still have lots of their stuff: Arctic Parka, snakebite boots, reloading equipment, rifle scope,, owl decoy, game calls, books, and two Herter's guns. The Herter's over-the-top descriptions were addictive so that you REALLY wanted the stuff. I have 1969 and 1973 catalogs, the first has guns, the later one no guns. I just ordered a 1961 catalog off eBay.

I enjoyed the video a lot, brought back old memories for sure. We ordered mostly from Sears and Roebuck.and Wards but I remember Herters well.I was born in 61' and I remember us having a lot of salesmen too and we lived fairly rural.

As a kid my Excalibur was the Bowie knife . I must of had a dozen and a half of
varying quality , all purchased through various mail order outlets . My " need "
for even one was rather dubious as I lived in New York City and even in the
mid 1970s N.Y.C. was not what one might term " Bowie knife friendly territory "
but my mom and dad were cool with it .
I lost , sold or traded those knives long ago and in the fifty years since I've owned
a couple of hundred knives (give or take) , but to this day whenever I see a Bowie knife I want it . I guess somethings never change.
Great video . Peace , Be Free .

I also loved the Herters catalogue when I was a child . I had the improved Bowie , my alcoholic uncle took it and traded it for a drink. Several years ago R Murphy had some new old stock which I ordered. I have found with my old hands the thick handles are nice for use. I also have the Bull cook and herters guide book and my fathers herters down jacket

I found quite a few for sale on eBay. Not at a price I would pay but some of them were reasonably priced but the shipping was way too much to consider buying them.
I have an Old Hickory Buffalo Skinner like your curved blade knife in this video. I love it and have used it for Years.
I am a knife nut as hubby calls me but it is OK as he is also, we blend well. lol
Thanks for the video, it was interesting.

I share the boyhood memories of Herter's catalog with you and your viewers. There was another Herter's knife identical in shape to their Improved Bowie, but I think the blade was about 4" long, called the Bull Cook Knife. Was the hump on the bowie knife blade added or deleted in later years? I have several catalogs from 1970 - 1977, all showing the hump. Herter's went out of business not long after 1977. BTW: Old Hickory knife company still sells the Crooked (skinning) Knife style. I was wondering if they made the Herter's knives. Anyone know?

    • @workbenchknifeandtool
      @workbenchknifeandtool  Před rokem

Some Herter's knives were made by the R. Murphy Co. Until recently they still offered the canadian belt knife. There are a few others that offer that skinning design such as Green River Knives. Thanks for watching!

      Today ...
      they're zombie apocalypse,
      couch survivalists.
      If you have one tool
you certainly don't pound on it.
Not only is that completely stupid,
      but you also risk injury,
      and in a survival situation
      that is so internet- intelligent.
In the '80's the outdoorsmen knew
      to prepare
and then you wouldn't find yourself
      in a " survival " situation ...
( That required actual thinking )

Nice presentation. I have been using some bushcrafting knives called BPS knives out of Ukraine. Anyway there carbon steel and you can’t beat the price. I have a CZcams channel called PA Reloader. I do camping, reviews and bushcrafting. Maybe you could check it out. I just subbed! Take care and stay safe! PA
