I like how Austin has taken up the mantle of how old game theory was. Not as much ARG and deep dive into lore but more based in math and real world physics. I like both and I think both forms are crucial to game theory but it is nice that there is still a space for science as well as lore based theories on this channel.
I mean...at the end of the day the "science" based stuff is just an excuse to play with math. Because no single observation about a fictional world is relevant. At all. To anything. Where as lore is investigative of things that actually can be confirmed or denied and failing that, at least are within the realm of possibility. It's like, "The secret father of X is Y!" while "This thing is secretly a nuclear bomb's worth of energy!" with the latter being....well....random, frankly.
@@Amrylin1337 You mean the former not the latter.

@S0cksnD0gs I think that was the point.
I'd guess the stats would be something on par with the fingerprint shield. But magic based instead of pure physical resistance. It gives a bit less melee blocking power but like the fingerprint, gives a 90-100% block against magical attacks. You probably couldn't use it as a weapon like the fingerprint but it has a much more versatile block.
@@Zenoferrum Can you recommend me Matpat-like Channel where i can learn while having a Blast?
Question: If Radhan learned how to use gravity magic to ride his horse, does that mean that his swords could potentially be lighter? or worse, heavier?
What if he makes them lighter while he is holding it and then when he gets them moving fast he made them heavier?
Weight is simply Mass Pulled by Gravity.
Swinging a Sword is about Momentum and Inertia and those are affected by mass not weight.
well more likely than not, while the weight would be reduced making it easier for Radahn to wield them, the mass/density of the blades would still be as big and therefore it would carry the same punch regardless.

I'm just gonna point out that Radahn's swords are made of a metal that fell from the stars and is presumably harder than iron or steel. Additionally, Radahn uses gravity magic to enhance the weight of the sword when he swings them; that is what the purple effects on the swords are and why swings coated in the purple effect deal more damage/break more stamina.
As for a ruler? I've got an easy one for you. The model for the Bastard Sword appears to be a reproduction of the Hanwei Bastard Sword designed by Paul Chen. It looks exactly like it, down to the little bump in the handle that would help you with a two handed grip. This is a physical object you can buy and as such comes with very specific measurements.
I was so sad when he said he was using Radahn as mesurement... that man just ignores physics
so basically, you're just a smear on the ground at that point
@@douglasmarshall6949 Based on the calcs assuming they are steel and just going off of regular speed that is already a given.

For the measurements: you could've used size of your sword. Swords had usually very similar sizes. Just need to remember that, despite it's name, "longsword" in ER is definitely NOT a longsword. Heck, if you needed something less confusing in name, You could've used Flamberge (which I think historically has the least amount of length variation).
Theres still way too big diferences. Even 1cm will mess whole measuring.
@@erurainon6842 I'd argue it's still better than just approximation using human height which can vary even more.
Also, upon further reading, it's perhaps belter to use zweihander as a ruler, since they had up to 213 cm of lenth and we know that zwei in ER is both very long AND very heavy (historically zweihanders weighed no more than 4 kilos), so it's safe ti assume that it is the aforementioned 213 cm
Same with the katana. They usually have less variance than the longswords.
@@parleyeon7951 to be fair human height approxomation works surprisingly well because in souls games the player character is 1.7m
It's more like a mediumsword.
The fact that Redahn knows gravity magic probably means that he can make his sword heavier when he swings and lighter for the recoil of the sword up his arm to a MASSIVE degree. How truly hard he hits, we'll never know, but all I know is that this is a HEAVY underestimate.
Cool video, though!
You reminded me of fantasy novel that had a sword designed with a ... sliding counterweight?
The point is, that thing on the sword allows the wielding character to pull off some Fatality inducing swings!
Note: Gravity does not in any way increase or decrease the momentum of an object
@@tandemcharge5114 Sure, momentum can help, but a heavy object with the same momentum as small object will have more kinetic force. My theory may be a little shaky at best (I am no science major) but I will try to defend it.

Yes this here. You are right
The goat has arrived
Alternatively, Zullie has confirmed that the height of the player character is 1.7 m (which is super close to the value Austin uses here).
In terms of a measurement metric, I would suggest using wolves. Mundane wolves are common all over the lands between and they have nearly the same coloring as a grey wolf in our world.
In terms of measurement, modding is the way to go. Souls games give coordinates in meters, and the player character is 1.7m tall. So by using cheat engine you can freeze an enemy's AI and then teleport from one side of something to the other, and check the coordinates to measure a distance.
There might be multiple ways to get accurate measurements in this game.
1. the waypoint markers use meters to tell you how far you are
2. You could reference the previous souls titles if they have an accurate measurement and take the measurement from patches or the basilisk since they are the same in both series.
There is also boars in the game that would probably be an acurate size compared to the real world.

Sadly, radahn abuses gravity magic and even has it imbued in his swords. Any weight attributed to his swords could change according to his will, just like how he uses his magic to allow his horse to hold him up.
Just to note: the Radahn we fight is significantly weaker than his true strength as he is riddled with Scarlet Rot, half starved, insane, and holding back LITERAL STARS with his gravity magic. Also his swords are made of Tungsten because I say so
Yeah wish he thought of this
Isn't his "holding back stars" thing a casual and passive feat? Always thought this way, considering that, you know, he is insane.

When the sword connects with the shield, radahn would also absorb some of the kinetic energy.
Also Radahn's gravity magic allows a giant to ride a half dead horse. (that gravity magic must be reducing the weight of him and probably his swords by 50 - 100x)
4:35 Measure using the Zweihander as a frame of reference. That seems like a very specific sword with a direct real-world counterpart and uniform length.
yeah i was gonna say that, a zweihander is much more specific than just ‘longsword’
I think the only reliable measurement the game gives you is with fall damage registering. At a 16m fall you'll lose 30% health increasing linearly to 50% loss of health as you approach 20m. At 20m death is instant. You can hop of a brick wall or something, register the damage taken to find the height of the wall, and then work from there.
Doesn't your dex stat modify your fall damage resistance?
@@lautimartinez6341 It changes how much damage you take, not the height at which you actually take damage.
@ronza 3 war
you could take a sword like.. the zewihander that exists and real life and approximate the size of radahn's sword like that. Might not be 1:1 with the irl and in game version but probably more consistent than the average human height metric.
The Rising of a shield hero Crossover??
Just out of curiosity, couldn't you extract the model of the sword from the game, use it as a .stl and push it through a slicer to let it calculate the volume at a certain scale? That way you'd get a much more accurate estimate for the true volume and weight of the sword.
Yah
4:25 - Ok, so, for future reference, ask a souls modder. The souls engine actually has its units of measurement in meters.
(also the player character is 1.7m)
Edit - Also radahn’s swords are made out of “black steel”, you can read that in the description of the swords. (Ungalvanized steel)
1.7m is the average human height, so yeah
And here I thought souls protagonists were all short.
And here I was thinking, could you just use the average height of a galpagos tortoise?
Wouldn't be surprised if the blades has some meteoric metal as well

Ya know austin the issue with science videos about Radahn is how his gravity magic affects the weight and speed of his swords, he may even use it to make it hit even harder
The point still stands
@@victor_creator oh i personally love explaining it away with science, but Radahn uses a heavy amount of gravity magic at all times so it would be unwise not to consider the fact he might be using it with his swords
@@naruspheal1831 I'm not dismissing that fact. I am simply pointing out that Austin's conclusion is still valid, whether or not Radahn uses gravity magic to hit harder.
The only scenario where Austin's conclusion doesn't work is if his magic is being used to weaken his attacks, and at that point, Radahn may as well not be fighting.
@@victor_creator but it is weird he still can take fall damage lmao, prob just an oversight by the devs
Your standard Longsword is 90 CM in length. Meaning that your character is roughly 210 CM (pythagorean), so that may help you.
@Gioacchino Sessa very true.
longswords in Elden Ring are on the stubbier side, definitely shorter than average
@@CrowXIII so probably around... 85 CM, to prevent it from being considered a short sword?
And, according the the national jousting association: In Pluvinel's "Menaige Royal" of 1623, the proper size lance to use when jousting for rings or the quintain was 10 ft, 7 inches, much smaller than the lance used for man-to-man jousting. These lances were also equipped with aLance vamplate, a funnel shaped cup covering the area where the knights held the lance, protecting the hand.
So the jousting lance found in early game could be used as measure.

High melee damage reduction shields have long been one of the difficulty sliders for the game. Often a class starts with it and/or there is one very early in the game. That's part of the reason why the tried and true knight build works for a lot of players; other builds tend to be more risk/reward.
Lately, however, a lot of the tougher bosses do punish reliance on shields and sort of nudge players to being more proactive or depending on dodge, and magic bosses in particular do that. Radahn isn't that big of a deal though. Most of the mainline bosses aren't.
