  • We received some great news about the condition of the Jeep Cherokee XJ since the rollover accident and we've been hard at work bringing her back to life and getting her trail worthy again. In this video I'll share with the you recent body and suspension work we've done, the new wheels and tires we installed and what we have planned going forward. A big thank you to everyone that has offered some solid advice in our restoration. #xj #cherokee #jeep

I had the same problem with my rear hatch. The latch is stuck because the tailgate isn’t straight. Loosen up all the bolts to the hinges and line up your body lines and your rear hatch should close perfectly. Love the videos keep them coming

I have BFG KO2s on my YJ, my JKUR, and I plan on putting them on the XJ. No affiliation either, just absolute satisfaction with these tires everywhere I've been with them.

I absolutely love BFGoodrich. I recently got a CJ7 and it had the BFGoodrich radial all terrains (aka pre KO2s) and I finally had one give on my and was leaking air. I went to get new tires and bell tire told us that they looked at the numbers in the tires, and found that they were 16 years old. without hesitation we put the new KO2s on my Jeep and took them out. Very very sticky tires. I 100% stand behind BFGoodrich.

Thats GREAT news on the XJ! Im SO happy for you all and very happy the XJ is going to stay a part of the Trail Recon family, hopefully for many more years to come. As a confirmed XJ fan I was very concerned about the rollover.
From Battleship Overland in England - all good wishes.

Great wheel choice! I know black rims are the rage, but I am over 40 so I grew up loving shiny wheels (before black rims were "old school"). As for the roll cage, I vote against an EXO. I have yet to see one that enhanced the eye appeal of a rig.

So glad to hear the good news about the frame! I can see the worry is gone from your face and it has turned into excitement. I love the idea you and your son are trying to fix most of the dents yourselves. I love my Cooper STT Pros thanks to you but everyone need to run what works for them.
    Thanks for the update Brad....

Major thumbs up on the good news ! Check that windshield for leaks because the rubber molding and glue might have taken some shock after the flip and show some leaks later. Test it by running a steady hose over the corners and center of the window.

Just a little suggestion from what I’ve observed from other rigs, but I would recommend to do an internal roll cage because it’s a lot stronger. I’ve seen too many eco cages that aren’t attached to an internal cage buckle and break during a roll over. That just what I’ve noticed. You can do whatever you like.

    Yea, Great News!!!
Perfect reason to buy all those tools you'll need!
Doing the body work on the XJ will be a perfect way to learn since you don't necessarily need perfect bodywork on a trail rig. But getting it as close to perfect will be fun! More tools in your future I'll bet! Air compressor, spray guns, power sanders, etc... lol
Thank God for Harbor Freight! Cheap tools for the once-in-a-while type of repair.
    Looking forward to the updates!

  • @stallionranchwoodworks

You should have no problem with those body repairs. The only issue you may run into on the top is oil canning, because the metal has probably been stretched. But that is fixable as well with a shrinking disc and water. Good luck on this new chapter in your XJ, looking forward to the updates.

Tires & Wheels look GREAT in it. I'm glad to see You & your Boy make'n the repairs yourself's on it. Take'n out those small dents ain't that bad. Once you get the liner out the Top won't be all that bad UN-less you want it to be completely straight or perfect. You both will learn the body & fender trade. he-he.

I have ko2s on my 08JK and 04 Rubicon absolutely the best tires I have ever owned! I can compare them-to firestone, Goodyear Kevlar muds, good but people could here me coming for a block, Mickey Thompson mud, Bf goodrich mud, good but wore pretty quick, Bridgestone ( took off in 35 miles ( going in turns on pavement the tire were squirmy hows that for a tech term ) those are my tire reports with 145000 on the Rubicon, 60000 on the JK. The other miles were on a 97 Cherokee which still. Is my favorite. Just loved the way it handled and the versatility. Like the 2 we currently have just not quite as much.

Glad to here that your XJ will live on!
The mid frame stiffeners are a really cool upgrade. They take what you thought was a solid feeling XJ and make it really solid feeling. I did the JCR ones on our 95 XJ and it made a huge difference in how it felt on and off road. So much more secure and solid. Its a great upgrade! And it made a great platform to weld on the rock sliders I built myself. So now the middle of the XJ is super solid.
I will do my own 3/16" steel planting for the rear, but I will be looking into several of the front kits available when I do that. Still not sure which one.
Good luck with the Resto/Mod of this Jeep! Looking forward to future videos!

As always thanks for the great videos Brad! You should do an exo cage on the xj, I'm going to eventually do one on mine.

Try to put the key in the trunk lock. Hold it in the unlock position and at the same time, take a screw driver and push the lock latch down. It will only work if you are holding the key in the unlock position

You might have to pull the handle up too. When I did it, it took me 2 people to hold everything in position.

I've been doing the same thing with my own son in building up our XJ. Now that he will be a Junior this coming Fall when he goes back to engineering school, he is going to be super busy and may not have as much time to spend with me in the garage or out on the trails. So I'll take as much time now as I can get. Enjoy it while he's at home with you!

As they get older it's tough to find time, but it's always a good time when we are in the garage together!

For the rollcage i would go with the rockhard 4x4 cleanest looking cage in my opinion.

Push the dents out with a bottle Jack and 2x4 for the rooftop.

TrailRecon when you have pressure on the metal use a non marring hammer to tap the metal and stress relieve the bent points.
It doesn't take heavy hits but a firm tap bends the metal nice and slow and keeps it from springing back once you remove the pressure from the jack
