Here's the thing about vocal fry, when your sick or you're voice is overdone, you naturally shift to it when you speak. This tells me that it's good for your voice since the voice instinctively goes to that register when your voice is damaged or overused.

Not being facetious at all, because it is amazing sometimes how learning a proper way to do something (playing a guitar, bass, drums, or even singing) can really help with what you want to do. Thanks. I never really understood the difference between chest register and vocal fry register, being a soprano with little need to use low notes. But I now discover d I do possess these, as a Mezzo, as well as extreme high notes and am so excited about my low notes but don't feel confident using these, yet. I don't trust them like I know I can always rely on my right high notes. This will help me understand my low notes better, I think. And learn how to use them.

its because you just woke up, and your vocal chords are relaxed from sleep. remember, vocal fry is a very relaxed, loose sound. by the end of the day, after youve used your voice much more, your vocal chords are more tightened, making fries more difficult

Don't quote me on it, but I heard somewhere that it's much easier to do vocal fry, and even hit low notes when just waking up, because your body is relaxed, thus, your vocal chords have more slack, as opposed to how they would be in the middle of the day..

MKCD 20 I learned growl as a controled and streched "clearing the throat" and the "vocal fry" with the "subharmonic octave drop". I sang a note (in my case an A2, my range goes down to a Bb1/A1) and relaxed my voice until a low note "droped" off and I'm learning to control this.
Another difference: Vocal fry isn't unhealthy, growl sometimes feels to me.

Okay so I recently discovered legato style singing and I usually sing songs with a de compressed voice. It sounds okay to me but is are there any dangers? I usually sing The garbage pail kid gang bang by Jonny Craig. I would appreciate an answer from anyone.

Hey Justin, when I'm frying exercising in higher notes, it sounds really weird, not even sure if it's still a fry, or just a funny noise... how can I know if I'm still frying?

does the vocal fry actually have a real pitch or is it more kind of a disharmonic sound like white noise? automatic pitch recognition seems not to work with vocal fry, it jumps between very different notes all the time

So what about heavy metal singers and rock singers then? Are they singing in vocal fry and actually just screaming all the time? Seems to me a lot of them are able to keep their voices pretty clear and not destroy them.

With practice you start to scream in a way that isn't damaging... It's kind of hard to explain.

    • @TheBandFake

Also, a lot of heavy metal singing is false chord singing instead of fry.

Hi Atul! Try repeated gentle glottals *low in the voice and at a *very soft volume. Glottals are when the vocal folds come together and then release. Often, we start vowels with these. So try it on an "AH" vowel or whatever you feel comfortable with. And then, try holding the sound. This will often cause the fry to occur! We hope this helps! -NYVC
