Definitely not as infamous as the crimes in this video, but I do remember learning about a guy in 1993 who was pulled over by police for selling drugs, then ran away on foot. His problem: he was wearing light-up sneakers! The police were able to follow him easily that night. Lol
omg that image is hilarious-
I would like to present LaMarques Devon McWilliams for consideration, please. Known as the Acres Home Killer, operating outside of Houston, Tx. He kidnapped his last victim and put her in the trunk of his car and drove to the woods to assault and murder her. He got his car stuck in the mud and after several failed attempts to get it out, he put her behind the wheel of a car, and he pushed from behind. This worked. The car worked free of the mud. Unfortunately for McWilliams, the woman simply drove away, leaving this brilliant serial killer standing in the mud.
Here are a few more incidents: The Oklahoma bomber was caught driving a car with no license plates, The 90's NY World Trade Center bombers were found when they tried to get their van (that carried explosives into the parking garage) rental fee refund, and robbery suspects were located after backing their getaway car into a snowbank and leaving an imprint of their license plate in the snow. There must be heaps of other incidents!
Peter Sutcliffe, the "Yorkshire Ripper", switched number plates on his car. An eagle-eyed police officer noticed that the car was too new for the registration plates on it, and he and his colleague approached the parked car. Sutcliffe had a young woman in the car with him. She was let go but Sutcliffe was taken in for a motoring offence. At the police station another officer noticed an uncanny resemblance to a photofit of the Yorkshire Ripper suspect. He drove back to where Sutcliffe had been parked and found a screwdriver which may have been dumped from a car window. The officer returned to the station, told his superiors of his suspicions and about the screwdriver. Sutcliffe's car was searched and that revealed several knives and screwdrivers, some bloodstained, a bloodstained axe, lengths of rope, and rolls of duct tape. When confronted with this evidence, Peter Sutcliffe confessed to the murder of 13 women.
Had it not been for one copper being a bit of a petrolhead, who knew his cars, the young woman with Sutcliffe undoubtedly would have been another victim.
Wow, never knew that's how he was caught! Thanks!
Whoa that’s sick
The best story I’ve heard was about a guy who robbed a large bank. Then had coffee and donuts delivered to the cops responding to the robbery. The cops said the only reason they caught the guy was because he paid for the donuts with a credit card.
Add to the Casual Criminalist Don't List:
Don't go to the barbershop for a haircut with your victim's dried blood still in your hair.
I read that in his voice.
Oh, another minor one. In the town where my partner grew up, there was a guy at her school with a really unique name - Tavis or something similar. He decided to start tagging - graffiting a name all over the area. But he used his *own unusual first name*. He was brought to justice pretty quickly.
Rader famously asked one of the cops why they had lied to him. Fairly obviously the cop replied "because we wanted to catch you!"
This was awesome! And now you have a bunch more subjects for Casual Criminalist!
These, and maybe an Elizabeth Holmes one too, although that would also make a great Brain Blaze
These people need a notebook to write their crimes down in. Geeeee, sure wish someone had thought of that.🤣
Back in 1985, our school had just received an entire lab of 25 Apple McIntosh computers. A few weeks later, four of them disappeared. Nobody knew who did it, until a couple of weeks later, an honor student named David boasted to his friends that he'd pulled off the heist. He even told them where he'd pawned the computers. One of them told a teacher, who told the police, who checked out the store where he'd sold the computers. Three had been sold, but the fourth was seized and quickly matched up with the theft. David was charged, and of course, expelled from the school.
Simon's opening comment on the second entry needs to be added to the rules for criminals list over on the Casual criminalist 😂
Remember criminals, ALWAYS write down your crimes.
And leave it in a place "no one will think to look"
Someone should sell a custom notebook for that specific purpose.
There is a pretty recent case here in Poland: a man was stopped by the police because he didn't wear a mask at the shopping centre and it came to light that he was actually murderer on the run that was hiding for 2 decades. Well, he was finally arrested ;)
For a complete list on mistakes, see casual criminalist.
Has anyone mentioned Stewart Weldon yet? His downfall was a broken tail light. He was stopped in Springfield by police, but he then pulled away. They knew he was running from something more than a broken tail light. When they finally caught him, the woman who was in the car with him told the police that he had been holding her captive at his house. Three bodies were found at his home.
I can’t wait for more Casual Criminalist!
Although, I did notice you managed to squeeze two episodes in just before Christmas and am very grateful Simon!
This is a nice way to whet the appetite!
I agree... even though nowadays it's definitely getting more time consuming trying to keep up with Simon's vids since he's got like 50 channels and still busting out a new one every week or so..... 🤦♂️😂😂😂
At least the videos all come out on different days of the week but when I'm too tired to watch videos on the release day that's when they tend to add up at the end of the week..... 🤦♂️ At the rate that Simon opens up new channels pretty soon he'll be able to start his own streaming service called Whistler... where it'll be Simon everyday all day! 😂🖖
Surprised that he didn't mention TCC.
@@merkga i spend an unfair amount of time stuck in bed, or vomiting. CZcams videos are great for pain distraction!!
@@terryenby2304 Sorry to hear that... hope you're doing better. I agree with you these vids are a great distraction whether it be from pain, boredom, personal problems and so on. They do help with clearing the mind and getting away from mentally which is a must a lot of times.
BTK getting caught will ALWAYS make me laugh! Dude really thought the police were his homies! And Richard Ramirez getting his butt whooped 🤣
Raider was home free, what a cretin! I’m glad justice did get served tho but he could so easily have evaded it if he’d just kept his arrogance in check
I’m not one for mob violence or violence at all, but the RR thing I get.
@@williebauld1007 He’s so dang dumb! He really thought the police wouldn’t lie to him since they built up “rapport” I love it. So full of himself, thought he was smarter than everyone else and thought he had the police in the palm of his hand. Um, nope, think again, Dennis.
@@edgaralanfrog like I said I get it.
Ngl, wish the cops didn't show up to rescue Ramirez.
I do not believe I am intelligent enough to be a serial killer. To many chances to screw up.
Nice cover story 😉
@@julianshepherd2038 Thanks...
Tiny foolish mistakes and pure arrogant bravado, the rightful causes of a criminal's downfall.
To flesh out the Son of Sam arrest: when police in Yonkers, NY (25 miles from where David Berkowitz got a parking ticket and shot his last victim), checked his car, they saw a gun in the back seat. That provided probable cause to search the car. Berkowitz very helpfully also left a bag with ammo, a map of the crime scenes, and a threatening letter to the chief investigator. The cops staked out the car and waited for the owner. Berkowitz eventually arrived, got into the car, and was immediately swarmed by cops pointing guns. His response was to smile, say "You got me", and peacefully surrender.
At the time of his arrest, Berkowitz had another gun and more ammo, so it's likely he had another shooting planned. Berkowitz subsequently admitted to all the shootings, was sentenced to multiple 25-to-life sentences, and remains in prison to this day at age 68.
I hate reading long posts, but I wish yours was longer. Great summary, dude.
I remember when he was caught everybody breathed a sigh of relief
@@madonnasbutthole9674 thanks! During those days I worked in Forest Hills, Queens, near where Berkowitz committed several shootings. Everyone was spooked, especially women.
Was that the guy in Mindhunters or am I thinking of someone else?
@@roberthoward9500 never saw it. No idea.
I remember in the film Goodfellas, the guy "Stacks" was meant to get rid of the van used in the Lufthansa heist, but he spent the night at his girlfriend's house and left the van on the street. So when it was ticketed or seen, authorities searched it, arrested Stacks, and found incriminating evidence inside of it.
I think Stacks was executed while out on bail or something because 'Jimmy the Gent' didn't trust that Stacks wouldn't rat out the organization.
He was a drug addict. He would have ratted
See, now, if they just followed the list from Casual Criminalist that Elfy McElferton compiled and I prettified on Reddit, these criminals wouldn't have such problems. Silly criminals.
Sounds like these people could use a 'DEFINITELY NOT MY CRIMES' notebook!
The world's worst serial killer is still unknown, undetected and free. That's a sobering thought.
What about the guy who robbed a bank, but when the teller gave him the cash, he asked if she could deposit it into his account at the same bank. She said, "sure".
Really?
Don't write down your crimes, don't keep trophies, and pay the fares for your victims.
The Cas Crim needs and episode about top 10 dumbest criminals.
On today's episode of "If you're considering murder, watch this first"...
If you've committed crimes, make sure you keep up with the news.
I have an example from my hometown. it’s just vandalism but wow this guy was dumb.
Ok so here’s three things you shouldn’t do while committing a crime:
1. Avoid doing it in broad daylight
2. Don’t do it while clearly facing a security camera
3. Don’t do it in front of eye witnesses.
This guy did all three. In the middle of the day he came to a full stop in front of a building and cut off a couple driving right behind him. With the couple still sitting there the man jumped out of his car, grabbed a sledgehammer and ran at a window that had a security camera right above it and launched the hammer right into it.
….yeah the cops were waiting for him at his house…
At the rate that Simon opens up new channels pretty soon he'll be able to start his own streaming service called Whistler... where it'll be Simon everyday all day! 😂🖖
Note to self, if I commit several murders, don't ask others to bury bag with murder weapon inside for me.
In the Night Stalker case, it was a great moment when the people of LA came together to kick one deserving man’s ass. The Durst as a fugitive being caught because he shoplift a sandwich when he had the money to pay for it should be on the list
What did Richard learn by his capture?
"Never go anywhere without your gun!"
He kept it hidden between night stalkings.
Guaranteed if he'd have had it, handy, he would've opened up on his captors.
I live in btk's town. I remember when he reappeared, it was an interesting time
Number 5---40 cal Glock fine, but "loaded with Sig Brand Smith and Wesson ammo"??? wtf
Grew up in Park City near BTK's place before they tore it down and built a park there. He would people watch in his front yard while he pretended to do yard work, saw him more than once while riding bikes to the corner store. Spooky ass dude, never rode down Independence after dark.
Is this the TopTenz/Casual Criminalist crossover special? Kept expecting outbursts like STOP WRITING DOWN YOUR CRIMES.
As soon as I saw the floppy disk, I knew Dennis Radar would be here
“DUDE!!”🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I am always amazed that criminals with facial tattoos think that that was a good "career" move. Nothing stands out quite like a cross or swastika in the middle of your forehead, teardrops just below your eye, and various & sundry symbols, icons, or names all over your face. 🤦🏻♀️
The case where the serial killer was caught in Winnipeg was cool. Good to know that something exciting once happened in my city. Too bad it was nearly 100 years ago
The police officer who wrote the parking ticket on David Berkowitz's car was promoted shortly after
Start off the New Year light, eh Simon? Well done as always.
TopTenz, ever thought of doing a series on Infamous Crimes Not Solved Because Of Seemingly Tiny Mistakes ... ??
My candidate would be the Mr Cruel Crimes of 1987-91 in Melbourne Victoria, Australia. When the last victim, a 13 year old Chinese girl was kidnapped from her home at night on 13 April 1991, desperate Australian police called in the services of FBI profilers who duly produced a criminal profile on the offender and covering letter dated 24 April 1991. Admirable speed from the FBI but there was a problem. Australian police gave them incorrect information, erroneously saying all four incidents relating to the offender took place during school holidays. With no other information to go on, the FBI were to state there was a high probability the offender was employed in a school, etc.
Trouble was that NONE of the four home invasions and / or kidnappings took place when teachers and students are absent from school and just about everyone else is at work. For instance, these “school holiday” attacks include 2 Saturdays, when most people were away from work. Worse the 3 July 1990 kidnapping occurred during a normal school week. The 27 December 1988 kidnapping took place during the Christmas - New Year break, hardly evidence for a school connection.
Police spent an inordinate amount of time and effort checking out teachers in 1991, when the evidence for staff at school involvement was no higher than any other career for the offender.
When police realised their bungle, the message was massaged to ... “most crimes took place in or near school holidays”. Truly a masterpiece of spin. One can only hope they apologised to FBI profilers for wasting their time.
If police had given the FBI profilers the correct information would it have made a difference? Hard to say, but profilers are only as good as the material they are given. And an opportunity was lost.
Please note, CZcamsrs who do videos on Mr Cruel tend not to mention the 1991 FBI profile these days !!
So what i got from this is to always write down your crimes
Try as I may, I will never understand what in the world went through the mind of Dennis Rader when he made that mistake. He must have had a subconscious wish to get caught, because he was far too intelligent to trust the police to be honest with a serial killer they had tried to catch for years.
Or his narcissistic ego got in the way when he started communicating with them again, I mean I’m glad he got caught but ffs he was home free!
It wasn't the floppy disk that busted BTK.
It was the meta-data of the Word document he sent on the disk. (author/organization)
If he'd used notepad, no data.
I thought that there was a deleted document on the floppy that the police un-deleted, containing his identity. (Just deleting a file on a disk doesn't erase it)
@@TheDunestrider Could be, but I heard it was the "properties/details" of the file itself, it contains user, computer and time info.(and a lot more).
May I say thank you for all your hard efforts over the years your videos and content is spot on thank you I have learnt so much god bless you buddy thank you 777
By sig brand s&w ammo, I think you mean .40 caliber S&W hollow points made by sig
Number 3; imagine living in Berlin with the surname Goebbels. You would have to be a subject of interest for everyone, whether the name Goebbels was revered or reviled.
Don't appear on TV if you've committed murder.
Very interesting video. Some of these people are just begging to be caught. Thank you for the video.
#3 having that name. And in Germany. Your going to draw attention to yourself.
The beard looks cool Simon!
This video gave me tips on how to be a more elusive criminal.
What about the Chinese chain outsource killer?
A hitman hired a hitman who hired a hitman who hired a hitman who hired a hitman who told the victim
Hello Simon! Love your episodes!
This is off topic of this episode, your incredible at summarizing religions.
Would you do a history on the bahai faith?
Also my brother and i are wondering,
Is the retried pope still infallible?
Farzin
Don't provide technology of any kind (maps and discs) to the authorities.
They were all taken down by their own egos!
I know durst gets a mention on here for the jinx, as he should, but let's not forget that he was caught for the neighbor's murder because he tried to shoplift a sandwich while on the run. criminal genius, that one.
What about when no murder weapon is found or worse when one is found and has fingerprints and DNA evidence from more than one suspect ?
Woah... slow down there Simon. I thought I had my playback speed at 1.25x when the video started.
The photos associated with no. 10 are hauntingly beautiful.
A woman in the DFW area killed her husband. Her plan to get rid of him. He went to a local grocery to get things like a shovel, tape, rope etc. She was informed that she could save 50¢ if she used her frequent card. Well...
i think BTK wanted to be caught. his threats and missives show he certainly knew better than to take the word of the police.
No mention The Casual Criminaliat?
brb 've got to go move my car... whew... thanks dude
We had a case here in Australia. Well, it involved two Australian's in the US.They robbed a bank, and then posted pictures of themselves online waving wads of cash around!
That happens way, way more often than it really should. I've heard of at least 4 cases of it.
The case in most human endeavors, people just aren't as smart as they think they are.
And that murderous dude caught in Poland a few days ago after two decades of being on the run... because he didnt wear a face mask in a store.
Now go out and laugh at your local detective for all the hard work that did nothing.
2:20 - A missed opportunity for a perfect segway to a VPN sponsor!
This your casual criminal is list lol
There's a movie or two, and a book on what not to do if you're stuck in a horror film.
Maybe there's room for a similar video on what not to do when you're a [fill in blank]? Based on common tropes of people who got caught?
Not that this would provide tips to the common chronically stupid criminal.
You could do a top 10 on do not write down your crime.
Could have used your don't write down your crimes binder. Lol...
Welp, it was bound to happen. I now have Simon Whistler narrating in my head.
I should probably Twitter this fact to the masses...
Hello my name is Mr Burns!
What's your first name?
I don't know!
Great plan, Bart!
I’ve heard of a seen people to cheap for their own good, but the one way ticket is epic. The only thing I can compare it to was someone who took from the tip pile he didn’t contribute to because it was to much. The fer was also a waiter. I wasn’t well off at all but the waitress got an extra 10 on the way out. Breakfast was cheap, but it was good. There was no reason or justification, and I believe he lost a few friends.
Dr. Hannibal Lector looks scary!
BTK could have just used a new floppy disk
So the next few casual criminalist episodes will be these guys then
Damn, I thought Top Tenz was dead
0:50 those eyes tho
How did I start at busbraininess blaze to finally ending at his first channel….this is like the only Simon channel I’m not subbed to.
Very interesting to see how they got caught. I wish they didn’t commit the crimes though.
Grant video but I’m trying to figure out what Sig brand smith and Wesson ammo is.
I think there’s another rule for the Casual Criminal Rules List, don’t drive dirty!
These people really should have read The Casual Criminalists rules of crime 🤣
I love your beard, you look great.
Me, living in Wichita KS, seeing the title and the obsolete technology in the thumbnail: obviously BTK
After he said "shave and a haircut", am I the only person that said "Two bits"?
Never forget the worst flub of all: "whoever SMELLED it DEALT it!"
Several Florida Man/Woman top tens possible
Giving criminals advice on how to avoid getting caught? What is this, Casual Criminalist????
Some people really can't be criminals unless they're a truly evil person or a highly capable narcissist. Most of these people believed their own BS and ended up rightly suffering for it 😂🤣
Nowhere near as bad the shoplifter who stole £100 of groceries from Tesco who was caught because he was wearing a customised Manchester United jersey complete with his name and squad number . The police traced who made the jersey went to his flat/apartment and arrested him .
wow - what happened to the colors?
