      @@YourVetOnline “Funny” story real quick. We adopted a GSD/Great Pyrenees mix out of a hoarding rescue in Virginia, with a 1-year deadline for neutering. My vet agreed to write a letter to the rescue requesting a 2.5-year deadline based on this research. (Yay!) The following month (July), their funny ad billboard out front read, “Your dog only needs the balls he fetches.” I’ve been pondering whether to change vets ever since, since that implies that either she’s ignoring the study or that she decided not to share the study with anyone else in her office. (Not yay.)

    Very informative! I have a Beagle puppy, she's 6 months old now. I considered she to be spayed before her first heat, because i'm not a breeder and i don't have any intentions to breed her. I already talked to my vet but he suggested to be spayed at least 1 year old. After i'm watching this and i think i know what his reason. I really don't want my baby prone to hypotiroidism, obesity or any joint problems in the future. Thank you so much! 🤗

    You don’t need to spay or neuter your dogs! Be responsible with your pets. This was only recommended because people are irresponsible with their pets to help control population. Just be responsible people! You will keep your pets living longer by not spaying or neutering your pets.

    Sure don't spay or neuter - and if you do, do it later after growth plates close. One problem is that if you're ever in the market for a rescue dog, most rescue groups won't adopt out to you if your current dog(s) aren't already desexed! RIDICULOUS

    My shih tzu is almost 6 months old, a couple weeks to go. She's not in heat yet, but my eyes are on her all day everyday now cause i know she'll be in heat any day now.
    Since she's my first pup, any suggestions as to how to notice the first signs would be really helpful.
    And how to keep her healthy, happy and comfortable during that time would be really helpful as well.
    Also,
    1) i want her to be absolutely comfortable during this time.
    2) I understand that their (smaller breeds') heat lasts longer, and that smaller breeds mature faster. Is that true? Again, suggestions are encouraged.
    3) i am not gonna get her spayed before her first heat. My mom has made it clear that we need to let her get through her first heat, at least. And she wouldn't have it any other way. I respect that.
    Any health concerns related to heat cycles are welcome. Just mention what point you're referring to.
    4) How do i know she's generally healthy without going to the vet? I think this is the basic any animal parent should be worried about and I'm worried about it too and any comments are welcome. Just mention what are you commenting towards

    How do I decide whether I should either spay, or neuter, my dog, without _assuming_ it's gender identity? If I choose one procedure over the other, I'd be denying that my dog exists, which would be weird, because he's looking at me right now, so, if he doesn't exist, then I'd be insane.
    Plus, I don't even know what breed he is anyways. He was _assigned_ doberman at birth, but that doesn't really _mean_ anything, right?

    I just had my 11month Cane Corso neutered. I have had Rotties, Mastiffs & have never seen them this uncomfortable after. The vet said on the day, it maybe best to wait until he is 18months however, I felt it necessary as he would constantly try humping my elderly rescue girl staff & if I stopped him he would grab my clothes & family clothing & this would be non stop for hours on end. After seeing him now after the procedure I feel so bad, as he keeps whining. 😢 All the large male dogs I’ve had they were never this frustrated and persistant like this. They also were neutered early but it didn’t effect their growth. How likely is it to effect his growth please & will it make him more aggressive as I was told by the nurse he may get aggressive. Thank you.

      Firstly, please ask your vet for more pain medications such as NSAIDs, or contact our vet team for a consult and we can advise vip.yourvetonline.com/ask-a-vet-a-question
      2. I think he will likely be just fine growth wise. It's impossible to predict and you did the right thing. As for the comment made by the vet nurse, aggression is also unlikely. Make sure you practice socialisation skills and obedience like sit, stay, come, on your mat. I'm sure he will be fine. All the best.

    More informative than most vidoes here, but how are hips and elbows affected by the testicles and why? If you wait until maturity what are the mental effects on your dog compared to surgery on an immature one? If dogs put on weight after this surgery, then surely that's more dangerous on joints? The general recommendation of your video then, is to neuter at some time or other, correct?

    What percentage of your veterinarian practice’s revenue come from spaying and neutering animals? I am going to guess a lot. You assume for population control that every pet owner is irresponsible. From meeting 5 vets in 3 practices in 2 states to discuss various health issues of a large breed puppy each brought up that they could neuter my puppy before 6 months, when there were more pressing issues at hand. Does your professional association push neutering at all cost? YOU ALL SOUND LIKE BAD USED CAR SALESPEOPLE. Yes population control of animals is important.

    • @YourVetOnline
      @YourVetOnline  Před 2 lety +3

      This is an interesting comment that I'm delighted to be able to answer.
      Yes, many small animal veterinarians perform a large number of spays and neuters, however, it is incredibly rare for them to charge a true market rate for this service. In fact, desexing surgeries are performed at cost or very close to and in many cases below in an attempt to reduce the barrier of price.
      As you stated population control is very important, and without subsidising the cost of this surgery, many pet owners would be unable to have their pet desexed resulting in the consequences mentioned in the video.
      We are an online telemedicine service, so no income is derived from performing surgery.
      As for your point regarding the timing of spey/neuter for large breed dogs - this is relatively new research and it's quite possible that some vets have not yet heard about it.
      I'm glad you found our video and hope that it proved helpful.

I have a male 17 month Pure Bred Frenchie he isn’t desexed as yet because I was waiting until he had stopped growing to see if he needed Brachycephalic Airway Surgery like some of his breed does so I only had to have put under 1 set of general anaesthetic.

      Discuss with your vet. Here in Australia we have the same requirements, however a vet can write a letter for you to give to the council advising that it is not in your dog's best interest to desex until 'x' date.
      I would discuss with your vet and council whether this is possible. Goodluck!

      There is no specific research so I would weigh up risk of mammary cancer vs musculoskeletal development issues. If you feel that you can monitor her mammary glands for life then choose desexing around one year. If not, spay before puberty at about 7-8 mths.

    Thanks a lot for this video, I’m a first time pup parent, she is a mutt - 32% chihuahua, 22% poodle, 9% shi Tzu, 7% cocker spaniel, 9% Dacshund, 8% Mimi pin, 6% bichon frise, rest 7% super mutt (whatever that mean). In this situation, to determine if she be spayed at 6 months age or later do we go by her main breeds such as chihuahua or poodle or adjust the timing given that she also has some the higher risk breeds shi tzu or Cocker spaniel ?

    Please consider hormone sparing sterilization! Look how reducing hormones in humans can utterly mess people up physically and mentally :/ Dogs are not humans, but also dogs mental health isn't nearly as studied as humans, and hormones can play a huge rule in mental health and feeling good.

    • @YourVetOnline
      @YourVetOnline  Před rokem

      There is very little evidence to suggest that this is relevant in dogs or cats.

      @@YourVetOnline there is thou... Can easily find it googling, and can also find others including vets here on CZcams talking about it. Behavior and physical.
      And then there is just considering sex. There is evidence that dogs do enjoy sex, it's a big drive, removing the hormones removed the drive ... Removing a big way our pets experience pleasure... That's really messed up.
      I get that you've done this to likely thousand of animals thinking you're doing it for the best, and trying to consider that maybe something you've done is actually harmful in some way is a huge mental shift to do and so you dismiss anyone saying otherwise, dismiss the evidence for it, but ...evidence is there if you look and open your mind to maybe being wrong and maybe having promoted something harmful.
      Talk to vets that are making the switch perhaps.

      @@hefoxed this whole video discusses the evidence around desex timing regarding some physical and disease attributes.
      As far as behaviour goes...the evidence is slim. But is related to timing of fear response. Not pleasure.

    • @hefoxed
      @hefoxed Před rokem

      @@YourVetOnline Underestimating the complexity of animals is not useful either. This is what contributed to horrid fishing practices due to people thinking fish didn't feel pain because the have different systems than us. Looking to science is important, but our soceity and science has biased -- and biased contributes to bad conclusions. They just found out snakes have clits -- not because it was hard to find, but because scientists just figured they didn't and assumed that sex is just a biological need and not pleasure driven/encouraged.
      As a trans person, I know what's it like as a human to have wrong hormones, low hormones, and good hormone levels. Some of the "side effects" shown from neutering corresponds to having incorrect hormones, which we know is an issue in humans because humans can talk, but dogs and cats cannot. There are things animals cannot be asked, cannot be said about the effect of removing their hormones and reducing their sexual behaviour -- the understanding around hormones on other systems and health factors is still being figured out in humans and that has been heavily studied for 100ish years iirc -- can you honestly say that the studies on animals has been done in a way to really explore this well, to really determine both the physical and mental health of de-sexing animals? It seems more the focus is on how it's advantages to owners over the animals.
      Please look into vets that are making the switch and their reasoning. You're not going to listen to me. Also, consider the perspective of folk in places like Norway where neutering is banned due outside of medically necessity for its cruelty.
