  • With many of Africa’s key species, including elephants, heading toward extinction, Akashinga is a radical, new and highly effective weapon against poaching. Founded in Zimbabwe by former Australian special forces soldier and anti-poaching leader Damien Mander, the women-only team of rangers is revolutionizing the way animals are protected, communities are empowered - and its members’ own lives are being transformed. Mander’s innovative approach to conservation calls for community buy-in rather than full-on armed assault against poachers: If a community understands the economic benefits of preserving animals, then it will eliminate poaching without an armed struggle. Executive produced by three-time Academy Award winner James Cameron and directed by Maria Wilhelm, AKASHINGA: THE BRAVE ONES is a celebration of the courage, conservation and unorthodox thinking that’s leading to massive positive change.

I watched this video like 5 times... Is amazing how empowerment can do to any human, not only women but men too. I'm humbled by their strength, honor and braveness. As a woman I'm even prouder because most of these ladies have tough lifes and come scaping from violence, poverty and other hardships of life. Many are mothers, but all sisters now because of this great program.
I hope more ladies can join in and chance their lifes and ours, by protecting our lovely animals and African lands. You ladies, are a hope to this world.

In the first half of the film I kept asking to myself *"Why did they choose women to form the Akashinga?"*
Then at 8:27 the leader of the women said *"I love my elephants like my children, so I must protect them like my children."*
Then it made a whole lot of sense, they chose women, most of whom were mothers because of their motherly instinct to protect and defend. What an awesome documentary and an awesome organization and an awesome mission. Thank you.
