  • It was a very scratchy day, with little lift. I forgot how rough 03 stubble can be :)
    Glider Type: Grob Astir CS
    Reg: G-CKCP
    Location: Tibenham Airfield
I think one of the main stereotypes of aviation and learning to fly in general is that you have to have deep pockets and come from a very well off background. I can tell you now that is completely false. I know there are many young people out there who want to learn to fly but think they can't due to the financial reasons. Actually flying is very affordable. My main goal in life is to become a commercial airline pilot.

I am a glider pilot and I am based at Tibenham Airfield in Norfolk. We're a club called Norfolk Gliding Club (www.norfolkglidingclub.com) and run a very affordable scheme called the 'Junior Scheme'. We pay £55 pounds a month and that includes 10 flights a month and half an hour free flying fees. After half an hour you pay from the zero mark. This is a very affordable way to learn to fly.

As always, you hit the rising air right after your downwind radiocall :)

A very nice video! A good place to place the camera you've found. One can see all instruments, your rudder, stick and surprisingly much of world outside. And thanks for not accelerating the film and not editing-in any music. Makes the film much more instructive.

I flew this glider for the forst time a few days ago and got a 3.5 hour flight. It's pretty nice and light!

Those first minutes of flight after a winch launch are a bit stressful, specially when everything you find is weak lift that only keeps you at the same altitude... then you have to be careful not to drift too far away. At your place it seems you have a lot of large fields around at least. I've flown the Astir like 20 times now and I only managed once to stay in the air for 2 hours, all other flights where very short. I like this plane though. I've heard from instructors that this model is better flown at higher speed and banking angle on thermals, and I've proven that to be true. Unfortunately, that's a dangerous combination of parameters at low altitude, so it is safer to start at ease like you did, even if it means having a short flight. What I would have done differently is flying with the speed needle at or above the yellow bug!

Nice, but what's the finger tapping about? Stuck altimeter, but same behaviour in ASK21?

Most of our altimeter are sticky

Most of my instructors used to tap when I used to do good in glider … and now I have picked it and just tap lightly when I am doing good on my solo flights 😂😂 ….

Gliding in a nutshell. The type of flying for those who want to fly for sport, not transport.
