  • Let's talk about Anki vs Quizlet, because when you're talking about the best flashcard app or the best spaced repetition app, these are the two most popular names that come to mind. The Anki flashcards app has been around for a long time and many medical students, including ourselves, swear by its learning potential. Quizlet flashcards have also been around for a while, and for many students it has really brought the fun back to learning. So in this video we are going to go over the pros and cons of the Quizlet app and Anki flashcards review style.

Thanks for watching everyone! **Correction in the video, Anki can be used online via AnkiWeb! However it's features are severely limited and to make use of the full workflow and study efficiency, the downloaded version is the way to go (it's free). A word from the Anki developers about this : ankiweb.net/about
If you want to check out Remnote, go to www.Remnote.io (just type it into your search browser). happy studying!

I never heard of Anki. I am a 3rd year Electrician Apprentice, and have used Quizlet for 2 years. I have found it to be a valuable tool, however, it is severely limited by user input. Quite frankly, sometime users posting content to the site are... not so smart. I have found study material with outright wrong info, mislabeled study groups (title says "motor controls module when the content is actually lighting), etc.
I dislike the typed mode, as you have to follow the syntax of the user who posted it, if they used a comma, and you don't, it says you're wrong, although it does give you the "override, I was correct" feature, which is handy. As for "spaced repetition", that is not a concept I had heard named before, though I get it. In "learn" mode, in my opinion, Quizlet DOES have this. It will often repeat or reword questions to me when I get them wrong. Something I find very annoying at times when it is simply syntax errors like a comma or whatever.
Another problem for me at least, as an electrician, is that the curriculum for NCCER students was recently updated to follow NEC 2020 code, prior to the update, it was based off 2014 code I think. User input/updates have been slow to catch up to this. A user might say the answer to x question is ABC, but the actual test says "ABC is typical, but what other answer is possible" with answers ranging from ABC.2, or ABC 2.0, or the like.
Another problem is test answers and study guides based off images, I have never created a study guide myself, so I am not sure of what the interface is like, but sometimes electrician's tests are based off of arrows pointing at images, of a motor, an electrical diagram, or what have you. The test will say "What is the arrow pointing to?", and it seems like this is very difficult for users to input, because it is often quite different from the textbook or the test.
      PS: Stevieioe, is that you?

Personally I just love Anki. I have discovered it a bit over a week ago and have already memorized about 2600 flashcards (of course it is not a long term result yet but I have never studied so efficiently before). Also the plain design helps to study without distraction. You just see immediatly how many cardsyou have to study and what folders you've got. No better way to focus and keep a good overview. And the add-ons allow you to personalize it, so you can gamify the experience just as you like. I'm not a fan of the games shown in the quizlet demonstration for example, but I downloaded an add on for Anki so I see a cute puppie every now and then and it plays music. Now I'm looking forward to studying more cards to see my puppie or grow my Pokemon

Sure, you might remember things better when you write them down, but what matters the most is how you interact with the content you need to memorize. I don't think printing flashcards would be helpful, as you'd need to carry them around, they wouldn't be organized by what you need to review, and assembling them can be a pain in the ass (i tried it only once lol). You sould try making online flashcards to see what you think, and actually flipping them to see what you can recall/working with the ones you remember the least/get wrong more often.

For cramming I like active recall but over time (spaced repetition) I hate it. I'm quite happy reading sentences on an Anki card and if I can understand it then just moving on. So I was thinking about getting Anki for the iPad as this is my main working device. I do have a windows computer but it’s really slow and I don’t really use it that often. Using AnkiWeb also isn’t really an option as it has limited features and I would have to manage my Flashcards on my computer. Then I thought that Quizlet could be an option as I had used it in the past. However, back in the day, the premium version was around 25€ annually. That price now has almost doubled so getting Anki for my iPad would be cheaper. Especially because I’m planning to use it for many years. A lot of the games that Quizlet offers just aren’t that great for the types of stuff I have to learn. And they would likely take me a lot of time compared to just simply going through my flashcards. I really don’t want to pay a lot for an app that I use for flashcards and I don’t like annual subscriptions. Anki does seem like the better option and I think I can overlook the 90‘s beta design.

I'm trying to switch from Quizlet to Anki (because you literally have to pay for everything on Quizlet now) but the main thing I dislike about Anki is that it doesn't make me click the right answer or type the right answer in, it just sort of asks me if I remembered the answer which doesn't really solidify the information in my head. Does anyone know of an app that's more similar to Quizlet in this way?

@@CajunKoiAcademy As a long time software developer, including iOS apps, I can assure you it was not difficulty of maintaining the algorithm. It's most likely to be an IP issue. Perhaps Anki has managed to patent SRS and threatened Quizlet. A patent on a straightforward idea like SRS is completely absurd, but that's our patent system. It's completely broken where software is concerned. There's a remote possibility that the feature just didn't fit their target audience and they were simplifying, but I doubt it.

Lately I've been dissapointed in Quizlet.
Yes, the interface is way better than Anki and is more approachable for learning. But many of the options it had got cut and others were made premium. The learning feature is limited to use and you only get one free test per subject.
The app was better until that update. But now I think it's not worth using unless you don't want to puchase the premium plan.

Hi Nathan, thanks for the comment. The learn feature on Quizlet is really cool. It’s similar to spaced repetition in that Quizlet will modify it’s algorithm to show you content that is is more difficult for you and it gives you feedback. However from my understanding, it is not geared toward “long term retention” of material and more for you to prepare for you immediate upcoming test. It’s more for the student who needs to “cram” for their upcoming exam. At least this is what I gathered from the Quizlet Blog Post by their creators, but I’m open to revisiting the topic. Do you use Quizlet? And if so what are your thoughts on the matter? Would love to hear them!

I've become afraid of the sync button for fear of it reverting to the reduced version of notes that are in ankiweb vs anki droid.
So..I started using 'study smarter' app as an alternative, but now the bas***ds decided to remove offline accessibility for free users... of course.. classic. After I just spent a week making packs of cards to revise on regular 2 hour train journeys.. furious is an understatement.
