- The HIDDEN Mistake that allowed Michael Corleone to know it was Carlo Rizzi How did Carlo Rizzi Betray Michael and Sonny Corleone? | The 48 Laws of Power Explained
In the Godfather, the one event that completely changed the paradigm of the Corleone family’s fight for supremacy, was the trap placed for the acting don, Sonny Corleone. There was someone within the family that had conspired to have him taken out, a traitor. However after years of rebuilding, Michael finally confronts this traitor after years of putting them at ease, giving them a false sense of security. As we all know, this traitor was Carlo Rizzi. So the question that we all have been wondering, is how did Michael know, Although we can assume that he concluded that he saw through that.
However, upon looking into this further, it's actually not as simple or clear as we all thought, rather was actually quite shocking….
At the height of the 5 families war, Carlo betrayed the Corleone family and played a crucial role in taking out the acting boss, Santino Corleone, Shifting the balance of power in the war. After sonny was taken out, the don gathers what strength he had left, and goes to negotiate a peace deal with the other families. Which put them in a bad position, however he knew that if the family was to survive, he would need some time, and make sure his son Michael is back to takeover and regain their position on top. And so, after Micheals return, a couple years go by and he is now the new don, and the time had come to settle all the families unfinished business. One of them was avenging his older brothers murder. But after seemingly giving Carlo more responsibility and having him enter the closely knit inner circle, even becoming godfather to his son, Michael confronts Carlo on his betrayal, which completely shocks him. But the question we all have, is how, how did Michael uncover that it was Carlo who had betrayed the family and had pulled that little stunt courtesy of don Barzini. How was Michael able to even get a confession from Carlo, revealing the final thread of this scheme. After Micheals return, a couple years go by and he is now the new don, and the time had come to settle all the family's unfinished business. One of them was avenging his older brother's murder. But after seemingly giving Carlo more responsibility and having him enter the closely knit inner circle, even becoming godfather to his son, Michael confronts Carlo on his betrayal, which completely shocks him. But the question we all have, is how? Who did Carlo call? What happened to Carlo Rizzi in The Godfather? Did Connie know Carlo killed Sonny? What happened to Connie's baby in The Godfather? Why did Carlo betray Sonny?
How did Michael uncover that it was Carlo who had betrayed the family and had pulled that little stunt courtesy of Don Barzini? How was Michael able to even get a confession from Carlo, revealing the final thread of this scheme? And why did Michael and Don Vito allow themselves to be perceived as weak and naive?
Well, this goes back a lot further than you think…
Yeah, This was part of a masterful set up that was years in the making.
He somehow managed to skilfully utilise one of the most powerful Laws of Power.
Giving us a true masterclass that you need to understand.
So who is Carlo? Carlo was of half northern Italian and half Sicilian descent, he grew up in native of Nevada and former labourer, Carlo migrated to New York City following trouble with the law and later became a friend of Sonny Corleone, through whom he met Sonny's sister Connie in 1941 at a surprise birthday party for Sonny's father Vito. They were married on the last Saturday of August 1945 in a traditional Sicilian wedding at the Corleone compound, a compromise made in order to appease Vito, who was disappointed with his daughter's choice in a husband.
To put things into perspective, here is a timeline of the events, to give us an overall view of the backstory as well as what led to all this.. and also summarise what had happened so that we can go into the important details.

@@Rorschachqp also Paulie and Hessio

Carlo was lulled into such a false sense of security just beautifully...he was brought in so close when it came time for Michael to finish him, he never saw it coming.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
It was a beautiful play by the Don
What is the name of the song used at the start of the video
You do realize this was pretend right?
Disagree with that. I think in the back of his mind, Carlo knew he was more than likely a dead man. He hoped he wouldn't be found out as a traitor, but he really didn't have anyplace to go that wouldn't further solidify his status as a traitor....so he hoped like crazy that he could be forgiven against his own gut feeling that he really couldn't be forgiven. That was what made Carlo sit tight and take the bait.
It was so messed up what Carlo did to Sonny. Sonny befriended him, introduced her to his baby sister.
But Carlo was a weak little man who was probably easy to turn. Jealous and bitterness can cause terrible outcomes.
These two Godfather movies are brilliant masterpieces. Your videos help me understand more of the psychological complexities.
These videos have made me realize the films were even greater masterpieces than I originally thought.
In other words:
Know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away and know when to run.
Outstanding!
That's a funny Otto von Bismarck story. That's why you should ALWAYS read the treaty. You never know if there is secretly a genius sentence in there.
Thanks. The main clue was in the hit itself; the killers knew sonny would be at the stop, the only way it could have happened is if the fight Carlo started was manufactured because they knew sonny would fly into a rage, leaving without protection. ❤
Tom loved Sonny more than his other brothers because Sonny found him and convinced Vito to take him in. I think when Tom adjusts his tie seconds before Clemenza garrotes Carlo as a way to signal Clemenza to take him out. To avenge his brother.
Michael Corleone: Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.
Carlo's suit was a fashion betrayal as well.
😂
You mean his proto leisure suit? It was 25 years ahead of its time.😅 (They did have broadly similar outfits like that in the late 1940s-early 50s).
Carlo’s fashion choices made it clear that he wasn’t a “company man”. All of the other members of the family were dressed for success. Carlo was dressed to impress. I believe the present day term is “peacocking”.
@@sardonicus76 in the novel, that described Carlo. We read about his muscles, hair and skin tone, giving him a narcissistic vibe.
The fact he allowed Carlo to abuse Connie goes back to old school Italian ways. A man ruled his house and keeping his wife in line was expected. Like in The Sopranos. Richie tells Chris to never lay a hand on his niece unless he gives her his last name. Once she was his wife that was seen as okay.
Not exactly ok but, as his wife he could not really butt in
@@nagone11 No that’s it exactly.

Ah, that little farce you played with my sister.
You think that could fool a Corleone???
Well.......... it did, kinda, fool Sonny
The birthday party was December 41 . The wedding was 45 almost 46 . So there was a long courtship.

You could also see this as a mistake by vito for not seeing that Carlo wanted more and therefore making him jealous and betraying Sonny which ended in his death.
Of course Vito saw it. But he was in no position to stop it during his near-death recovery.
Stopping it should have been up to Tom Hagen. Tom himself reflects in the book... paraphrasing ≈ _"If Genco were still Consigliere then he would have seen this trap for Sonny a mile away"._
Michael and even Tom Hagen managed to use multiple Laws of Power. Here are some of the main ones:
Law 21: Play a sucker to catch a sucker - Seem dumber than your mark.
Judgement: No one likes feeling stupider than the next person. The trick, then, is to make your victims feel smart-and not just smart, but smarter than you are. Once convinced of this, they will never suspect that you may have ulterior motives.
Law 35: Master the Art of Timing
Which states: Never seem to be in a hurry-hurrying betrays a lack of control over yourself, and over time. Always seem patient, as if you know that everything will come to you eventually. Become a detective of the right moment; sniff out the spirit of the times, the trends that will carry you to power. Learn to stand back when the time is not yet ripe, and to strike fiercely when it has reached fruition.
and a few more "hidden" ones scattered throughout the video...

Sonny had a genius for urban guerilla warfare. He managed to fight the five families to a stalemate. They had to eliminate him
But it was planned years in advance. The placed him as a long term asset .
The way his abuse of connie stopped just after sonny die . Thsts the key
Do we know that the abuse actually stopped, though?
@@robertbusek30 yes in the novel it discussed in greater detail. Before sonny even with vito and camellia.
As soon as sonny died and when Michael came home , Michael made friends with him , and brought him into the business,
In the book the vito owned the street all the houses outside the main house , Michael and kay in one , Tom and his family in another.
Michael offered them a house beside him and kay and carlo bond over being the outsiders with Tom's wife ( she's a tiny part) .
But Michael and kay discussed it .
We learn later that vito and Michael had put it together, Michael was doing that keep your friends close but your enemy's closer .thing .
Agh that farce you played with my sister * . It wasn't his nature. He stopped cheating as well . And the call from that woman and the arguments were all to provoke.
Once sonny eas gone there was no need to . She was a good wife and the mother of his children and she loved him . She knew him for years ,before snd even sonny was surprised. Nit vito he had a bad feeling from the beginning.

Carlo is an idiot. He shoulda stayed loyal and kept his head down. I swear Sonny and Carlo were friends… 🤦🏾♂️ crazy
Sonny didnt lack the skills to totally defeat the 5 famlies. He in fact was planning on rubbing them all out. Thats why barzini had to strike first
Sonny was balls out aggressive in war. He was cunning but he was nowhere near as cunning as his father and his younger brother.
@Predators--cz2fb to be fair he had tom instead of genco and thanks to vitos tactical blunder he didn't have luca brazi

Good video for the inner circle. Especially for guys like me who only gather his knowledge through books and videos based off books since all my elders have passed and I’ve become kind of a hermit. Trying to get back out into the world but only keeping in contact with people who are worth the conversation and energy to be around when I do get to see them. I miss my elders who have since passed on bc they had such a vast eclectic amount of wisdom and knowledge between all of them that they used to share.
This is the second time you did a vid on this topic, but this time you went into more detail!!

So the initial abuse that led to Sonny’s beatdown of Carlo wasn’t part of the farce?
No. That abuse was just Carlo being an asshole. No motive behind it
Sonny's mother told Sonny not to interfere in Connie and Carlo's marriage.

Watching the way that Michael and Don Vito let Carlo think that he was safe and that he outsmarted them reminds me of the recent episode between Vladimir Putin and Yevgen Prigozin , when he tried to take control of Russia and after the "peace" deal that the Belorussian president orchestrated he thought he was safe and that Putin was gonna let it slide , he felt like the king of Russia , he felt unstoppable just like Carlo did , but then he fallen on Putin's trap and died on a plane crash.
But when you think about it, the family would have looked much better had 1) Sonny been wise enough not to associate with Carlo, 2) The family ensured not to put Carlo in a position where he'd be capable of hurting the family...Maybe try to encourage Connie Corleone to find someone who isn't so untrustworthy and ambitious? Maybe you don't put someone like Carlo in a position where he has so little importance that he'll consider betrayal as a potential good decision, yet important enough to be able to betray the family in a way that ends up costing Sonny's life. I know that this is incredibly easy to say in hindsight, but it's equally as easy to pretend that everything that happens in the movie is the result of brilliant plans by the Corleone family...I mean, yes the movies are in large part about Vito and Michael's plans, but the very reason why they have to make those plans are because they ended up tough situations that they hadn't perfectly anticipated. Obviously you can't always control what your enemies are going to do, it doesn't mean the Corleones are weak or stupid, it, I just think that, while the plans that we see take place on screen may seem to be brilliant and very well coordinated, we shouldn't forget about the bad planning or lack of planning that led them in such situations to begin with. Maybe they aren't such absolute masters of the "rules of power" and such...Now let's be clear, I'm not saying that these aren't amazing movies :p.
These videos do tend to portray Vito and Michael as the greatest strategic geniuses to walk the earth.
If Gianni told us himself , your right i wouldn't believe him ! Thays guys a degree in bullshittery

How did Michael know? Puzo nd Coppalo told him! :)
After reading the book and watching the film I have one question. Carlo was messily garroted by Clemenza. How did Michael stage his death/ disguise the cause of Carlo’s death for the funeral? Was his murder blamed on another family? I don’t recall this being explained. Connie clearly knew but no one paid attention.
I wonder what Don Vito would have done?
He didn't. The official story was Carlo had run off, abandoning Connie and Victor. Connie filed for divorce and got it. Only Connie and the capos know the truth, as does Michael.
Honor and integrity 🫡

Who was Carlo dialing on the phone when Michael walked in? Someone posted earlier on one of these podcasts- Carlo was calling his mistress to tell her he wouldn’t be coming over and would be delayed.
Yes, in the book he was talking to one of his girlfriends. He was right about not coming over.
You think there’s any significance in the fact that when the situation that led to Sonny’s death happened his mistress called and said she wouldn’t be able to make it and then when it was Carlos turn He instead called the mistress saying he wouldn’t be able to make it I feel like there something to that
@@bry7507 All I can realistically pull from it is coincidence. Maybe Puzo was inferring that many of Carlos' problems were tied up in his awful habits.

Excellent analysis. Of course it was obvious that it was Carlo who had Santino set up, but they way Don Vito and Don Michael played him until the time comes (too bad Don Vito had passed), it was really machiavellian. I would like to suggest you, to make a big analysis on Don Carmine Luppertazi Jr and how he used the "Laws of Power", in order to pretend the weak & fool, but ended up eliminating two bosses (Don Phil and Tony) and taking over everything. If you rewatch carefully the "Meeting of Minds", the "Last Sit-Down" and even the first scene Carmine appears with Johnny Sack and his father, you 'll see, that it was Carmine all along!!!
Hope you 'll find it interesting and make it soon!!!

I remember when I first saw the movie that Carlo set it up. Wondering why they didn't kill him. I hadn't heard of the 48 Law's Of Power then. 😊
Hello Carlo.
Barzini is one dude you don't mess with.
He didn’t know he suspected. That’s why he had him confess. He needed to know Carlo was the last
some rules come naturally to some people.
They are still showing him the tree .....
The way Connie evolved over time, she would have taken care of Carlo herself. She would have ordered the hit.
INCORRECT! When Tom informs Vito of Sonny's fate his reply is, "I want ALL inquiries made."
You're wrong on this one, Steve. Vito does say "I want no inquiries made." Go watch it again. "All inquiries" makes no sense when put together with his next sentence "I want no acts of vengeance". Or Google it.

I almost always like the videos on this channel, but this one could have been done in 10 seconds... _"how did Michael know it was Carlo that betrayed the Family"?_ Uhhh DUH, it couldn't have been more obvious 🤷🤷🤷
The dots are so easy to connect
I always assumed Carlo was a plant from day one.
Most Iagree with, but in the end, I don't believe Michael totally knew Carlos part fully until he admitted it.
Sonny made his biggest mistake the first day that he met Carlo , he didn't put the fear of God in him on day one .
That very first day , he should have scared every single bit of ambition out of him .
By the time that Carlo met Connie he should have been to scared to take a shit without Sonny's permission .
What is this theme.....
Confession did not sealed his fate. His fate was sealed before. It was quite obvious that Carlo was the traitor. Too convenient for him. Sonny hated him. Carlo was casted out. Humiliated. And suddenly that day Sonny went to beat more brains out of Carlo he was ambushed and killed. Too obvious even without direct evidence.
So confession saved Carlo from immeasurable pain through torture. They would anyway take facts out of Carlo's crippled body.
Somebody read their sun tsu
