  • The Schutztruppe (Protection Force) was the Germal colonial army that was actually the smallest colonial army of them all/ The German Colonial Empire started at the end of the 19th century which is also known as the era of modern imperialism. Germany was a latecomer when it came down to this, because Germany was united in 1871. Otto von Bismarck organized the Berlin Conference of 1884-85 which led to the Scramble for Africa where European nations divided the African continent for large scale colonization. German East Africa and South West Africa (Deutsch-Südwestafrika) was the two largest German colonies in Africa. In Asia they established German New Guinea and took over several islands in the Pacific. In this formations episode more about the German colonial army, their weapons and uniforms.

    In 60's the Government of West Germany decided to give pensions in Askari natives who fought in WW1
    When announced that a lot of old men gathered outside of a city hall I don't remember in which city of Africa
    The Germans didn't no who was soldiers and who wasn't
    One german had an idea there was some policemen with rifles
    He told them to give rifles to the old timers and after 50 years remembered how to make exercises with the rifles
    Unbelievable
    Forgive me for my english

    Germans treated natives serving in German Colonial Army in German East Africa under Paul Von Lettow-Vorbeck with respect unusual for contemporary Europans, on the other hand Germans atrocities in Namibia are among the biggest crimes of European Colonialism in Africa. That shows how complicated history is.

      They were made ''mandate'' territories by the League of Nations...Togo and part of Cameroon passed into French hands, the other half of Cameroon passing into British hands, which is causing problems to this day...
      Namibia passed indirectly into British hands by being made a mandate territory of the Union of South Africa which was a Dominion of the Empire, SA didn't relinquish control until the end of apartheid in 1994
      Pacific territories likewise passed indirectly into Brit hands by being put under administration of New Zealand

    As late as 2013 the Reiterdenkmal was causing controversy. People didn't like having a memorial that honors the German perpetrators of the genocide. "As a rule, the Schutztruppe waged their wars against the native tribes with the utmost brutality and in contempt of international laws of armed conflict. The Schutztruppe generally made no distinction between combatants and non-combatants, which means that even women and children frequently became victims of the hostilities."
    Germans being Germans

    • @rolfdaswalross
      @rolfdaswalross Před 3 lety

      You're kind of generalising the whole situation here, no question the Germans did horrible things to the African natives but saying they pretty much didnt make a difference between woman, children and enemy soldiers is just wrong. If you check out the east African campaign in WW1, you will notice that on British side alone over 100.000 native carriers died, not even counting other victims of the war, since the region was widely plundered by all Germans and British equaly, sometimes just to deny the supplies to the enemy
