- The Schutztruppe (Protection Force) was the Germal colonial army that was actually the smallest colonial army of them all/ The German Colonial Empire started at the end of the 19th century which is also known as the era of modern imperialism. Germany was a latecomer when it came down to this, because Germany was united in 1871. Otto von Bismarck organized the Berlin Conference of 1884-85 which led to the Scramble for Africa where European nations divided the African continent for large scale colonization. German East Africa and South West Africa (Deutsch-Südwestafrika) was the two largest German colonies in Africa. In Asia they established German New Guinea and took over several islands in the Pacific. In this formations episode more about the German colonial army, their weapons and uniforms.

In 60's the Government of West Germany decided to give pensions in Askari natives who fought in WW1
When announced that a lot of old men gathered outside of a city hall I don't remember in which city of Africa
The Germans didn't no who was soldiers and who wasn't
One german had an idea there was some policemen with rifles
He told them to give rifles to the old timers and after 50 years remembered how to make exercises with the rifles
Unbelievable
Forgive me for my english
Great additional information. I read that somewhere as well!
I heard this story as well, although it was my understanding that it was a broom, not an actual rifle.
Tsingtao Beer is China's second largest beer company and, you guessed it, it was founded by Bavarian colonists In 1903 when Tsingtao was a German possession
👌
Germans treated natives serving in German Colonial Army in German East Africa under Paul Von Lettow-Vorbeck with respect unusual for contemporary Europans, on the other hand Germans atrocities in Namibia are among the biggest crimes of European Colonialism in Africa. That shows how complicated history is.
@colin minhinnick Good point
Thanks for pointing out, Jan.
@colin minhinnick good point\
Good evening from Namibia. Ta for the great video. There is a splendid museum in Tsumeb, Namibia that is well worth a visit. Many recovered weapons from the South African campaign to rout the Germans during the 1st World War.
Many thanks for your message. Love to visit Namabia one day!
Yes I also think of our empire.
Inspirations..?
Well, the House of Luxemburg once were Markgraves of Brandenburg, Kings of Bohemia and Emperors of the HHR. Quite impressive.
0:33 Yo that’s me 😎

Interresante video! Zijn er nog Duitse invloeden overgebleven in de voormalige protectoraten?
Dank. Ik geloof dat in Namibië nog veel sporen te vinden zijn!
Will you be doing anything on the 30 years war please, as I find it confusing?
Not anytime soon, sorry.
Germany lost all their colonies after the first war so Germany has a good reputation in the tropics.
Not in Namibia I presume...
@@HistoryHustle I worked in Rwanda, Burundi and New Guinea but not in Namibia so I do not know about Namibia.
Interesting. People in NG still have a collective memory to the German colonization.
@@HistoryHustle They only colonized part of
the northern part and some of the islands.
True. After this it became fully British (or Australian if I am correct). Just wondering: is there difference in development between the nothern (former German) and southern part.
Bestimmt.
interesting vid. would appreciate if there was no music during narration.
Thanks for the feedback. You're actually the first person that says it. You found it distracting?
@@HistoryHustle not distracting per se, just felt unnecessary
Is there also a web with old dutch uniforms like the german one you mentioned?
There was one, but it's offline. So no :(
@@HistoryHustle :(
I wish Germany had more colonies
I understand why you would say that.
@Lord Gaylord Ondor why didn’t I think of that
what happened to the colonys after versailles treaty? were they given up?
sorry i see you explained that lol
They were made ''mandate'' territories by the League of Nations...Togo and part of Cameroon passed into French hands, the other half of Cameroon passing into British hands, which is causing problems to this day...
Namibia passed indirectly into British hands by being made a mandate territory of the Union of South Africa which was a Dominion of the Empire, SA didn't relinquish control until the end of apartheid in 1994
Pacific territories likewise passed indirectly into Brit hands by being put under administration of New Zealand
Yes.
where did you get the maps
School.
WW1 was about England and France owning the world and Germany wanting it.
Don't forget Austro-Hungarian and Russian and Turkish ambitions.
@Mike Cain: indeed.
ive been saying Throne wrong all these years, i will say trone now.
I see.
early squad
hope you liked the video

The nazi party hot their brown uniforms from the German army in 1920. They were surplus collonial uniforms no linger needed as thzy had lost the colonnies.
Didn't know this. Interesting.
Ich liebe es wenn englisch-sprachige irgendetwas auf deutsch aussprechen 😂 "Chutztrupä"
Danke
Nort Papua New Guinea ex Deutsch colony
South Papua New Guinea ex British colony
West Papua ex Dutch colony
Yes, indeed.
As late as 2013 the Reiterdenkmal was causing controversy. People didn't like having a memorial that honors the German perpetrators of the genocide. "As a rule, the Schutztruppe waged their wars against the native tribes with the utmost brutality and in contempt of international laws of armed conflict. The Schutztruppe generally made no distinction between combatants and non-combatants, which means that even women and children frequently became victims of the hostilities."
Germans being Germans
You're kind of generalising the whole situation here, no question the Germans did horrible things to the African natives but saying they pretty much didnt make a difference between woman, children and enemy soldiers is just wrong. If you check out the east African campaign in WW1, you will notice that on British side alone over 100.000 native carriers died, not even counting other victims of the war, since the region was widely plundered by all Germans and British equaly, sometimes just to deny the supplies to the enemy
Then whats about that "germans being germans"? Is this just plain racism?
@@rolfdaswalross you see the quotation marks in my comment
, International Encyclopedia of the first world, an article by Thomas Morlang. war under the section Conduct of War of the Schutztruppe.
@DJ BANE Two wrongs don't make a right.
@@gibraltersteamboatco888 the quotationmarks end just before the 'Germans being Germans' ... so what do you mean?
that is a very nice picklehaube you have
Thanks
Good video, but uninteresting 🤷🏻♂️
Why did you find it not interesting?
@History Hustle : because the difference between a class of history and a video of history by an excellent youtuber is .... human drama
We look for human drama in CZcams history videos, not for neutral aseptic historic events
BITTE IN DEUTSCH!!!!
Sorry.
