Thank you Google for celebrating National Library Week 2019 and for ensuring everyday people that Google has no objective to replace traditional libraries. American Libraries are misunderstood when people ask why do we need public libraries when we have Google? While public libraries are transforming to be about far more than books and story-times, public libraries are also still about more than electronic resources, search engines, digital skills, workforce development, and small business development. Public Libraries are interactive community spaces where people can still come as they are and never chance, come together face to face and contribute to their local community leadership as well as enjoy local programs, book discussions, crafts, services, food, collaborative working spaces, and meeting rooms. Indeed, public libraries are the last remaining bastions of democracy. IFLA estimates that there are about 350,000 libraries in the world, not counting the estimated 40K little libraries for free sharing around the world. It is estimated that there about 7.5 Billion people on earth and it is impossible to survive any place in the world without some level of access to information. To this end, I would argue that every living person who has a heartbeat is a human library. If people are really libraries, perhaps what we know as libraries should be called information access centers. Who cares any way? However, it is clear to me that the best way to reach the world with information and digital inclusion is via libraries that are information centers around the world. “Grow with Google has to be the largest international collaborative program plan for international libraries in the world.”
