  • What's Left of North Wildwood's Beaches 2024
There have been so many questions asking, "What do the North Wildwood Beaches look like" so we figured it would be best if we filmed the current situation in North Wildwood.
Just some context for this video. This was filmed about 4 hours before it was high tide, meaning that the water could be closer, which can be seen from the watermarks on the beach.
This upcoming spring, we are expected to have some kind of storms blow into the area, which could lead to a shifting of the beach. This shift could be good or bad, it just depends on where the current is going and where the sand gets dropped off.
At this time, there is no plan to do a beach replenishment in North Wildwood before the summer 2024 season. This decision is based on the fact that, at this time, there is no feasible way of doing such replenishment.
As you will see in this video, the water is hitting the back of Morey's Surfside Pier and underneath Sportland Pier.
It is this area where the beach replenishment has its problem.
In years past, the trucks were able to pass here to bring sand from Wildwood to North Wildwood without major problems. A few times a month the water would come up to the pier and crews would have to rebuild the pathway.
That is not possible with today's beaches since instead of them having to rebuild this pathway a few times a month, it would be every single day, leading to most of the time on the job being dedicated to just rebuilding this path only.
Other alternatives have been considered such as bringing the sand on the beach, but since smaller trucks would be needed, it would make a 2-month rebuilding plan into something that would be 4 months and not viable.
Check out our video below and let us know what you think of the current conditions of North Wildwood Beach.

Dang , that is so weird .
I lived in N.J. for about 25 years through the late 60's to the early 80 's
I've seen the big switch around of the sea there a couple of times.
Used to walk that beach from Juniper Ave (where I rented a place two weeks every summer) all the way up to the Moores Inlet bar. (I think that's what it was called) across from the Red Garter.
Amazing how nature changes things !
I even remember waves breaking under the Hunts Pier when i was young, then seeing the ocean "way out there" and not even touching the pier !
Your videos bring back many memories !

I stayed in Wildwood every year of my life in the 70's and 80s, then sporadically after that. Back in the early 90's we stayed at place on 2nd Ave between Ocean and Surf. I remember what seemed like at least a quarter mile from the road before you even touched water.
I'm really in shock the way the beach (or lack thereof) is now. I mean there is NO beach at high tide from 2nd to 7th Ave, and after that, it's barely a beach at all.
Erosion and rising ocean levels are a scary thing. Give it another 20-30 years and the water will be up to Ocean Ave. The block between Ocean Ave and JFK Beach Dr will be gone.

Notice how the beaches stick out further into water where there is no sea walls? That's because sea walls cause more erosion and speed it up. You need more sand and rows of dunes, not more sea walls.

NJDEP is very myopic with its “Trenton knows best” attitude. After two floods in Passaic county this winter several mayors asked the DEP to lower the water level at a critical lake ahead of the next storm in hopes of lessening the expected flood. The DEP refused and the third flood followed.

This is amazing.... This is my beach... the beach we swam at... lived just a few houses down from the Hereford lighthouse on Chestnut growing up (late 80's). I remember the beaches and dunes being extensive all along the coast of North Wildwood. The beaches around 16th street were 1/4 mile wide between the water and boardwalk. I guess it's just sand and therefore it's not permanent... , but WOW!

Also, it looked at though Champagne Island doesn't really exist in the inlet anymore, but now a beach has formed and extended into Hereford Inlet on both the NWW side and the Stone Harbor side... really fascinating. From 10NBC Philadelphia FEB 4,2024
"New Jersey is refusing to allow a shore town whose sand dunes have washed away in places to build a bulkhead to protect itself, ruling that no one is in imminent danger.
The state Department of Environmental Protection told North Wildwood on Wednesday it will not give permission to the city to build a steel bulkhead on a section of beach where the dunes have been completely obliterated by storms.
That prompted Mayor Patrick Rosenello to say Thursday the city will move in appellate court for permission to build the barrier, which the state says will likely only worsen erosion from the force of waves bashing against it and scouring away any sand in front of it.
“Obviously we are very disappointed in the DEP's continued lack of concern regarding shore protection in North Wildwood,” he said. “The department has failed to do its job and now they are trying to thwart our efforts to protect ourselves. Frankly, it is unconscionable.”
