Now my sister got married a year ago, god knows what went into her head when she recently visited me and my parents , she was not even lettering me take food out or clean my plate.
It is because we live in a society where after marriage women are not allowed to seek help from anyone in their household work, it also changes the mindset somewhere that women are only responsible for all the daily household chores.
The only issue I have with equality discussion is that people talk about patriarchy like it is a plan of men. It's dramatic. Reality is people only act to surrounding without any plan. Neither men, nor women.
Isn't it though? I mean, patriarchy ultimately is like a religion which relies on feudalism and brainwashing to keep certain people back so certain groups of people can stay ahead. After living this way and eliminating all recourse of everyone but the beneficiary of this system it becomes a self-fullfilling cycle cz it's deeply ingrained in people's mind a few generations down the line. It Also relies of reinforcement through symbolism, rituals and practices like say Karvachauth or only men can be priests, over marital symbolism being overdone for women etc. to reinforce itself.
Housewives are toiling in the kitchen while men are watching TV. You missed the part where these men are toiling to provide for the family. Both have important work and role. Been a long time follower from newslaundry, you need some growing as a man in this topic.
If we speak of educated and office going class of men/earning partner, there are no 9-5 working hours, weekend, casual leaves, (sometime no sick leave too) and retirement for the stay home partner.
