Sprawling Lichtenberg borough is known for the Stasi Museum, with spy equipment and archives in the former headquarters of East Germany’s secret police, and the Hohenschönhausen Memorial, a former prison now open for tours. The Dong Xuan Center is a cluster of halls full of Vietnamese produce markets, clothing shops, and restaurants. Nearby is Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery, where many socialist leaders are buried.
Friedrichsfelde is characterised by the zoo and by multi-storey, mostly renovated Plattenbau buildings. But also the old village centre is still visible.Friedrichsfelde North: Plattenbau and lots of green. To the north is the area around Rosenfelder Ring, and Charlotten- and Kowalkestraße. These quarters are characterised by renovated Plattenbau buildings. In the late 1990s, the Gensinger or Friedrichsfelder Viertel was created between Alt-Friedrichsfelde, the S-Bahn and Gensinger Strasse. In addition to five- to six-storey residential buildings in curved form, there are also office and commercial areas. About three quarters are green spaces. Old-Friedrichsfelde with village church in Alt-Friedrichsfelde, the historical centre of the district can still be guessed. Several buildings from the time around 1900 are still preserved. Several farmhouses and apartment buildings are still standing, but also a reconstructed inspector's house and the old boys' school in the Rummelsburger Straße. Today they are listed as historical monuments. Also the old village green with the village church Friedrichsfelde points to the historical centre. The church itself dates from the early 1950s. The previous building was destroyed in the Second World War.
