Hans Landa was not a double agent, he was an Oppurtunist. He realized Germany was losing the war so he worked himself out a sweet deal with the U.S. but Aldo Reine wasn't going to let him get off Scott free so that's why he carved the Swastika into Landa's forehead at the end. So he could never escape what he was. And people would immediately judge him by the Swastika scar, so even though he's gonna get a sweet Lil house and land on pristine Nantucket Island, Americans would never truly let him ingratiate into society. At least, that was my interpretation🤷🏼‍♀️

Because if they took their suits off, they could pass for “decent” people. Love this film, but something I feel like people may miss is with the part of the German soldier who refuses to tell the Bastards where the other soldiers are isn't a Nazi- he is just a man. Not every German soldier was a Nazi, in fact very few were. Hitler had introduced conscription so German boys as young as 16 were forced to fight, and almost all German soldiers and civilians did not know of the concentration camps or death camps and simply were fighting for their lives, this includes this man. The Iron Cross, was a symbol used in Germany before WWII and is not an anti semetic symbol

If Landa really wanted to capture her, they could have gone after her with the car. In a deleted scene, Landa explains to his soldiers that he let her go because she has nowhere to hide and will die from exposure. This emphasizes Landa's sadistic side. (Other deleted scenes explain how Shoshanna found shelter and became the owner of a movie theater). And the guy getting scalped at 8:00 is not actually Tarantino but a dummy with his likeness.

Hans Landa, the detective, wasn't actually a double agent. Up to that point he was a serious through and through villain and Nazi. But he was a sleazy opportunist. Not only was a murdering Nazi he was also a traitor to the Nazis as well. He could probably tell sitting at so many tables as high German officials that they would eventually loose the war and with the Bastard's plot he had an out.
The scene where he is talking to the American side to negotiate the terms of his "aid" were supposed to be like putting salt into a wound. At least it was for Aldo. Aldo's whole thing is that he and his men hate Nazis and the reason they ask a Nazi if they're going to take off their uniform and why they don't like this idea is that they ARE Nazis. Being in the military or "just following orders" isn't an excuse for atrocities. To them if a Nazi can kill innocent people, be complicit in the holocaust and do every other horrible thing they did during the war and then the war ends and they.. just get to go home and live a happy go lucky life with no consequences. Well, that's just wrong.
Back to Landa. So at the end when he's working out his deal to basically retire in America and be treated as a hero because of his "double agent" status, this is a grievous insult. If he had gotten to be the "Jew Hunter", a truly vile person that not only hunted them but took pride in going back to old places than had been cleared to MAKE SURE they were exterminated then he doesn't get a happy ending. At least he shouldn't.

The tension building in the opening is legendary, the only other recent movie with a similar rising tension would be Sicario and its 15-20 minute sequence before the border crossing. If you haven't seen that one yet you should. It is directed by Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2047) so you are in good hands :)

Donny "The Bear Jew" is played by Tarentinos friend and fellow director Eli Roth. He directed such horror films like Hostel 1&2, Cabin Fever, The House with the Clock in it's Walls, and Green Inferno.

Please don't forget True Romance (1993), it's a Tony Scott movie, but the scenario is by Quentin Tarantino! 👌🏼
It's a must-see and it has one of the greatest dialogues scenes! 😎

The first person you see getting scalped by the Bastards is Quinten Tarantino in his classic cameo. He doesn’t appear in all of his movie, but it’s fun to try to recognize him.

You mentioned you'd seen The Hateful Eight prior to this. Tarantino likes to make his films it's own little cinematic universe. Tim Roth's character, Pete Hicox, in THE is the great-great grandfather of Michael Fassbender's, Archibald Hicox, in this one.

Landa's only helping them because he knows the Germans are going to lose, and he's trying to save himself from the military tribunals that will follow. He's just an opportunist, a weathervane- he will choose whichever side benefits him most.
