Oh, Man! Loved that story. Every jazzer who ever "sat in" with a hip band and then crashed and burned on solo or comping changes knows what Coz was talking about. As a bass player, I hated to hear Cherokee called because it was about a million notes a minute if you just played quarter notes - never mind getting a "whoopa-dee-do" in there. Coz has a knack for telling it right.. AND his jazz sense is right on the money. I didn't know he was TRULY so hip with his music. Max Roach! Whew! Bless him!
Maybe not excelling as a drummer, but he surely makes up for that as a comical storyteller. Besides being very funny and entertaining, it's also a big promo for Jazz (and Jazz musicians) for a broad audience, that wasn't that familiar with it, at the time.

I saw Mickey Roker in a (now closed) jazz club in Philadelphia around 2004, and he still smoked. The longevity of some of those jazz drummers was astonishing.

such a great video.... so funny.... this is why marching drum corps " a good program" a important, so u have the conditioning and skill sets to not cramp up, as cosby put it, have a led pipe installed in ur arm :)
This will be my 20th year, mixing audio on stage, for the Playboy Jazz Festival, at the Hollywood Bowl, and hanging with Cos. He certainly knows his stuff, and knows what he does & does not like, when it comes to jazz and blues.
haha the first time i sat in on a jam session, they played cherokee also , and i thought it was a rhythm changes, so i was comping it like it as rhythm changes. it turns our they are both in Bb so maybe i just sounded hip :D
