  • Today on the smallholding I'm putting my winter worm breeding bin into my CFT to give it a good boost as the weather warms up.

Apple sauce. Make sauce, add to warm 1lb jam jars, seal jar with new lid to finger tight. Place jar into pan of boiling water with trivet in base. Low boil for 20 minutes. Lift out and allow to cool. Don't touch lid til vacuum seal. Shelf stable for 12-28 months. If you have a light coloured apple add a vitamin C tablet when making sauce to keep colour bright.

Thanks mate, I’ve got more frozen apple sauce in my other freezer so I’m not worried about losing a bit and the worms loved it 😊

@@SmallholdingUK VG, I like the jar approach as freezer space is at a premium.

That's a good idea to consolidate bins. I had to do the same thing. Larger bins manage temperature swings and moisture regulation better, in my opinion.

So I have 2 galvanised planters that are 1.2m sqaure and 85 deep I put a digital thermoniter in the both added a load of wood to the bottom and uut builders bags inside and then filled the builders bags and filled them. Temp in the middle didn't go below 7 degrees C during the winter (I'm in Thams valley) and both are crawling with worms now, there are load of baby worms (really tiny) so assume the warmer weather just hatched them up..
I started 1 up this time last year by going round the garden and picking worms up and throwing them in and then started the second in September and just took a bucket load of compost with worms out of the one planter into the other. Both bins are doing really well. I just need to get all the leaves I collected over autumn into a big bin and let the worms munch that as well..
    Loved the vid thanks :)
One thing is I'm just not sure how to get the worms out, sieve them or some other method?

They will tend to stay in the top 6-8” if they are compost worms so you could gently dig off the top layer then use what’s under that, or just spend a few hours sieving but a ton bag will take a while I imagine

Hi can you tell my what size egg cup I’d need for goose eggs, as I can’t find the right size anywhere ?
Ps can you recommend a goose egg cup from anywhere ?

I’ve never found a goose egg sized eggcup, I use a small round plastic Tupperware type tub that just about holds them tight

Mainly tigers but I did have a few euros when I first started out so there might still be a few of them knocking about somewhere
