Restoring my Honda MTX. From start to finish.

  • What have i've been doing, why was it so quiet on my channel??!!
First of all, migraine and back pain.
Second, nesting season for my canaries. A very demanding time for my birds and me.
and then there was something else that bothereed me immensely.
My MTX had some issues which i could no longer ignore.
After several attempts to find someone who could fix the suspension link system on my bike, i finally found someone. I got the repaired link system back in March 2015 and finally i could start operation "Fix 'er up and make it look decent again".
Two years later, the "fix 'er up" part became a restoration. It's been a long time since i've restored a bike and now i know why. After a while it becomes a struggle.
    Short history:
The bike is a model 1982 Honda MTX50S, top of the Honda M-family (MT50 and MB50). It was also sold as a motorbike, but in The Netherlands only the 50cc was sold. Later on, this model was replaced with the MTX50R.
The MTX was never a success. It was expensive and heavy, furthermore, it was hard to get some decent horsepower out of the engine. Strangely enough, the engine was similar to that of the MB and MT50.
The MTX was the luxurious working horse though. the electronics were 12 volt, it had a heavy duty luggage rack, frame, and suspension, durable plastic parts, a very big fuel tank and a tachometer.
The overal quality was top notch, the ride was smooth and confortable and nothing felt cheap.
The MTX50S has striking similarities with the Honda XL line, and is regarded as the smallest of the XL's.
The MTX has been with me since i was 16 and has an extensive history. It has taken me to all kinds of places, including 400 km long trips. Now it is time for its retirement, only to be taken for a ride on nice and sunny days.
Some modifications were made to this one. The front wheel is now a 21" instead of the 18" (Dutch regulations only allowed wheels of the same diameter at that time).
The cylinder is an aluminium 50cc Airsal with NiCaSil coating instead of the cast iron one.
The exhaust is a classic LuHao.
The air connecting tube is the English version (original Honda).
The carburetor is a 16mm Keihin (original Honda).
The inlet manifold is original, but milled out to match the carburetor.
The reedvalves are homemade 0,15mm carbon ones.
The rims are D.I.D. 21" and 18". If i can get hold of the original steel chromed ones, they'll be replaced.
The taillight is the English version.
Nuts and bolts have been kept original as much as possible.
Swearwords used during the restoration; (censored), (censored), (censored) and most of all (censored).
Tools most used: Left and right hand.
Special thanks to: My rotating steel brush and cleaning agent.
    Thanks for watching!

My apologies for the lousy choise of music.
Tip; the photos appear for a short amount ot time (lots of them and i didn't want to make the video last for much longer). Pause at any moment to see more of the details.

In March 2015, i decided to restore this bike, knowing that it would take a lot of time and effort.
By the end of September, i had surgery after a hernia was discovered. A couple of worn out disks pinched some nerves. That made me able to walk again, but i'm still not fully functional.
Migraine attacks still appear every now and then, disabling me from doing anything at all.
Last year, my mother had open heart surgery, and became sick soon after that. She's doing better now.
All of these things just happen, life is just being life. Sometimes things just need to be done so i carried on with the restoration of this bike. Unfortunately, all of this caused me to neglect my channel and my dear subscribers... and i apologise for that.
Now that this bike is done, a load fell off of my back, and the extra time i now have will be used for my RC's!

Had one myself. With 125 cc. Pretty damn quick, but not quick enough to outrun the police😂Could hold them off for half an hour but by then I had half the police force chasing me😬 bikes were not allowed in the Netherlands so the cops destroyed it 😩restauration is pure magic! Congratulations .

    • @2stroke4me
      @2stroke4me  Před 6 lety

The motorbike police is well trained, hard to outrun them. Shame they destroyed it :-( And even a bigger shame Honda never sold the motorbike versions in the Netherlands. It's a bit on the heavy side for 50cc, the motorbikes were excelent (i've driven a 125 once).

Ah yes many Honda MB/MT/MTX's ended this way in the Netherlands,.
Even today driving around on these bikes is like holding a red piece of cloth in front of a raging bull for a dutch police officer 😂😂😂
The chance they will pull you over for a check is about 100%, 😂😂
Insurance costs for these mopeds was twice as high because none of them where stock and lots of accidents happened with them.
I got away very lucky one time with my tuned Honda MT (70cc,21mm carb etc etc) they only gave a 175 guilder fine (that was a lot 23 years ago) and i could continue on my way, and it did 85 km/h quite easy is where it's only allowed to go 45 km/h max. 😂
I still have my MT today and now getting ready to put it together again after being stored in parts for 20 years!

Thanks really enjoyed your video, I had a black mtx50 when I was 16 (1986) and loved taking it apart and putting back together again almost as much a I loved riding it, I did 25 thousand miles in that year, that’s a lot of hours in the saddle with a max speed of 38 lol. Watching your video brought it all back, hope your restored mtx goes as good as she now looks.

Compliments on the camera work by the way!). At that age they need all the support they can get and enjoy life as much as possible. Facing the wold's problems is for much later. • @2stroke4me
      @2stroke4me  Před 5 lety

Sounds indeed as a similar problem. The seal is located behind the flywheel. If the ignition coils and the inside of the flywheel are wet (from the fuel), the seal is either worn out or it has popped out.
Remove the seal, clean the surface thoroughly with brake cleaner and a paper towel.
Measure the depth minus 1 milimeter of where the seal was, and subtract it with the thickness of the new seal. That's the maximum depth of where the new seal should sit (the 1mm is precautionary).
Put the new seal in place and put a small amount of superglue around the crank case where the seal sits. Be careful not to glue the crank and seal together!
