I wanted to strip right back and go for an ultra low tech aquascape tutorial. I really enjoy these tanks and given how this went, I feel a ton of them coming on. Real low energy and something everyone can create in their home on a low budget. Hope you enjoy :)

I’ve just planted a 100l today. Needs hard scape but the wood just won’t sink. Planning a 300l next year sometime if this tank works
@@amandaphillips7651 glue or tie a rock to it. I think im going bigger as well....
We need a £100 Priced out Budget build Video - ASAP!!
@@MDFishTanks what kind of bottom do you use what size gravel and sand to top it off
This tank is so elegant and yet simple. I have been maintaining a 30 gallon Walstad tank for 3 years now. It is going great. I would like to start a 100 gallon one, but with sand just like this one. Did the sand stay on top of the dirt or did it get mixed up with dirt? What kind of light would you recommend for Walstad. I have tried many combinations and ended up using both fluorescent and LED together.
Thanks MD, after suffering with anxiety for a few years i think I’ve found a hobby which seems to destress me. Your videos help me wind down and I thank you. 👍🏾👍🏾
glad to help :)
I’ve been in recovery for 2 years now. And finding MD helped me keep my mind from wondering and not getting into trouble. The hobby has helped me in some dark times! No words can describe how much your videos and happy accidents.. lol.. has helped me over the years! Thank you so much for being you and your videos!
Aquarium hobby helped me too, glad it also helping you ellis
Ah, the new hobby is watching MD's videos? Definitely destressing! Keeping fish... not so much 😂
Me too😀
Can you do a showcase of your older tanks and how well or bad they're doing? We see all the builds but only glimpses of they're progress and sustainability later on.
He always breaks down and re-scapes tanks after about 6 months
@@glassboxfish:(
so we never know whether the tanks he makes are truly sustainable ?? lame@@glassboxfish
Awesome scape! Doesn't even look like it is only 60cm
Cheers MJ. The hardscape is nNot exactly ground breaking in terms of technicality 🤣, but I really do love the simpler and more accessible styles. Hopefully it's something that a lot of people will want to have a go at. 👍✌
MD: “I’m not looking for anything spectacular here.” Proceeds to effortlessly make something brilliant! 😂
Love the Walstad Method! Most stable tanks when you get them going. Looking forward to the updates of the this tank.
Again, listen to his comments at the end of the video and you'll hear MD say he's not making anymore videos
@@blinky5552uhh...
Walstad method doesn't use any kind of wood.
Every project MD does is already on some form of hardcore mode💯
🤣🤣
I loved seeing him take the time to pick the pebbles out of the top soil, and then putting a substrate that’s 50% pebbles
Oh my goodness I'm just on your old no tech video's cleaning my own tanks and this pops up! You are such nice company for "tank cleaning day". Greetings from Stockholm
nice :)
I have had reef tanks for years. 1 gal to 350 gal... never have I done water changes. I've tried fresh water, and had limited success. That is, until finding your channel. I have always been "low tech" reef, now I'm "low tech" fresh too... Great content.
Me and my girlfriend about a year or 2 ago met Diana Walstad and got her book signed, I had done it walstad tanks for years but set one up the same week as this and it’s been the most easy stable tank I’ve ever done!
Good to read she's still active. I've chatted with her and Tom Barr on some of the clubs like Plantedtank and Scape in the past. This was over 10 years ago, but she was very helpful and objective. My concern with some of the newer content creators who are "trying" the Walstad method is they completely skip the mineralization process, create too shallow or deep of a bed, and fail to prevent algae blooms, anaerobic pockets, etc. I'm not sure if they they didn't research enough, or if they're just cutting out content for time, but if they're influencing people to use potting soil (with organics) the incorrect way, then they're going to waste people's time, energy, and money.
@MD Fish Tanks IF you have ever wanted to start a second channel, I bet a MD Plus channel where you post once a week (at the start, maybe more once you get the hang of it) of nothing but peaceful B reel of one of your tanks, rotating though your tanks. We love watching you build your tanks, but what I wish we could see more often is updates on tanks, and a second channel with nothing but tank spotlights of exclusively tank footage would be great. Basically expand on the last couple of minutes of your build videos with no voice over, just tanks and music. Would love to see it.
Love your videos mate, Thank you for getting me in to this hobby, after leaving the Army a couple years ago I've struggled to find something other than booze to wind down and take my mind off work and everyday life, This is perfect for me, absolutely love scaping my tanks. Your a legend ❤
You da man, MD. Never fail to put a video out right when I need one. Just got phone service back after the hurricane and you notification popped up. Got a generator powering my tanks for a few hours. Thank God I scaped em all like your ecoscapes.
The shimp tank has to be one of my faves Hands down, the green on the rock makes the tank
You know why I subscribed to this channel? You legit love your hobby. And we notice. So peaceful, cheery and you make our days a little bit better.
Good man.....I know you hear this all the time....but you're absolutely incredible...not just the tech skills and talent but the amazing positive energy you give your off during your videos is amazing. I bet folks who never aquascaped before have gotten into it because of being inspired by your positively awesome videos
"And a diggy thingy", its the proper terminology for me 😆
I got vocabulary 🤣🤣
The tank looks absolutely beautiful, especially with the red floating plants
You probably already got this answer, but I couldn't find it in the comments. @4:53 approximately, you asked if moistening the soil was a good idea. In my experience, this helps because the water weighs down the small particles of the soil and makes them a single "mass". This helps because if you left the soil dry and then poured sand and gravel on top, you'd get some dust particles airborne which would then stick to the glass, making the water cloudy once you fill the aquarium up.
HI. He used topsoil but I've been reading to use organic potting soil. What's your experience?
Dr. Fish who only uses this method, make mud ahead of time . Ti takes out air pockets. When it is finally caped off no dirt will , escape.
@@gailtenaglia4398 That sounds like a good idea. I keep hearing about Dr Fish and his methods sound like something I'd enjoy. I'll look him up. Thanks!
Duckweed comb has changed my life 😮
Yes I was excited to see that too 😂
I love Walstad tanks. Definitely love the idea of a whole rack of them. Thanks for all the great videos, MD. Take care.
Your enthusiasm is infectious. And I never mind a distraction because I always learn something.
😊
I love these tanks. Thanks for going back to the basics. Love your scapes no matter how simple they are. Cheers from the US.
MD: carefully sieves rocks out of soil
Also MD: immediately puts different rocks on top
😂
Then MD comments on how beautiful it looks, and immediately caps it off with a light sand...
@@bigben8369 sounds right!
My husband was An Air Force Officer Enivironmental Engineer. They were fined if the dirt they were disturbing was not kept moist and watered down in order to keep the dust controled around the population because of known and unknown toxins. My guess is you moisten the dirt to control dust. Just my guess. Thank you as always for your sharing with us, your gifted skills and of course: your genius. 😁✌🏼🙏🏼🖖🏼🐠🥰
Removing the air bubbles does help a whole lot. Great video.
Felt very silly asking for a video using artificial plants last week I’m manning up and getting into the real thing 😂 £100 on red moor wood and lava rock and a new filter later and I’m making a list of plants 😬 cheers MD you’ve got me hooked on this so much
Telling me not to like made me like
I love watching your tank build so much, thank-you for constantly giving me ideas! Sending warm wish from Canada ❤️
I just have to say thank you for doing these videos, you've inspired me to have my own heavily planted tanks, a 3 gallon shrimp bowl, 15 gallon betta community tank, and a 10 gallon pea puffer. All full of plant life and fish that I absolutely enjoy watching daily. I'm honestly thinking about adding a 4th tank, just for plants to grow 😁
How many pea puffers are in your 10 gal? I have a 10 gal that I am currently cycling for pea puffers 😊 any tips or tricks would be super appreciated!
@@caffeinatedbee9554 I only have one, my local fish store had two but as I was observing them, they were very unfriendly to each other, so I only brought one home. I absolutely love my little Sea Biscuit. I definitely suggest starting some sort of food colony to have on hand. Snails, daphnia, guppy fry, shrimp fry, or live blood worms. My little guy is being rather picky about the frozen blood worms. He seems to want live food to chase around. So I have to make the worms wiggle to get him interested. I'm waiting for my guppy to give birth, my berried shrimp to give birth, my snails to lay eggs, and my daphnia to hatch. Hopefully I will have more than enough live food for him and my betta once it gets going.
@@ShmalMart That's awesome! Glad you have a good system going. I have some live brine shrimp, and I just bought some pond snails. I'll have to get my hands on some live blood worms, I only have frozen at the moment for my endlers. Thanks for the tip!
Hi are you doing water change on your 15 gal Betta community tank? How do you do maintenance?tia
@@michaeljeffcoronel1248 I was, I ended up upgrading that tank to a thirty, and putting my betta in their own tank. He wasn't a fan of going bigger unfortunately. I did do small water changes but only as needed when I tested and saw it was time.
Md thank you for the videos you help calm my anxiety and fight my insomnia
Father Fish channel has a much better improvement on the Walstead method. Definitely check it out. I'll never go back to gravel ever again. Why the industry pushes gravel makes sence because it kill fish which is great for business
Awesome as always! You are one of my constant reference when I was building my own tanks. I have a 2-year-old dirted tank that seems to be running out of juice so my next project will be stuffing root tabs in there
i have a dirted tank i'ts nice to see this kind of content i love the walstad method, all my 3 tanks are dirted tanks but only one has no filter, and 2 light bulbs it's running like a charm , started out with 5 guppys now i have about 100 after 7 months.
The shrimp tank looks insane! Rewatching the build now.
stunning yet simple tank
Love your videos. You got me into the hobby
awesome Kelly :)
Love your videos and your narration. Kinda interesting to see some new tanks that deviates from the norm out there
Wow
Amazing
Trippy glowing green rocks in shrimp tank
Der beste Influencer den ich in der Aquaristik jemals gesehen habe.
No Problem. Very easy. Look, Look.
Du bist total creativ lieber Käufer.
Ich öffne dir nur die Augen.
Auch wenn du kein Geld hast.
Das hier bringt dich weiter.
Very easy.
Yes I'm quite alarmed by this. Die unwissenheit!
Another creative effort. Would love to see another alternative approach such as the Plenum. It would also be a great exercise to see how the two methods comparatively deal with the nitrogen cycle.
Hello MD, greetings from Singapore.. I'm a huge fan from a small country love all your videos especially eco system tanks ,Big Up to you !
nice one 👍👍
Learned my eco set up from u as well just wanna say thanks.
Hope it's going well 👍👍
That comb trick has straight up changed my life.
Awesome as allways love it .
17:00 yes, fully agreed you need a test kit. i would highly recoment the freshwater one over the salt water one for both fresh and salt water set up's. the reasoning being that they are the same exact test kits for the same price but the fresh water gives both PH and PH high testing were the salt water only gives you PH high
Really great what you show on this movie/film!!!!!! Looks super
I just startet looking into this . . . so this video is very well timed for me 🥰🥰🥰 thanks
Congrats on 600 k subs!!!🎉
Immediatley bought a duckweed comb! Thanks MD!
Another great build By MD,I have a 130l planted using a budda like you did I love it and I've also recently sent up a nano reef as well 😂
Hi md, i really like your idea of having the species tank rack. I love your videos
You make it look so easy
Hello from the Netherlands I love your videos😊❤
love your videos , keep up the great work
I absolutely love watching your videos. I am pretty new to the fish hobby and have learned so much from watching your videos. I am thinking of trying this method however, I was wondering how the tank get oxygenated and if it is the plants that provide the oxygen. Thank you so much for providing these inspiring videos!
Beautiful!
Gravel vac question answered thanks MD !! :-)
Love it ❤️
I really appreciate this content 🥰😁 Sooo much knowledge 📚 🤯
Stunning tank🙌
thank you :)
I thought it was a really big tank when I saw the thumbnail. Very cool
I'd say medium size :) If it goes well...I'm going to do a 4ft one!!
nice tank boi MD
I came to Taunton today to visit the Maidenhead store, the tanks you did are amazing 👍
awesome. Glad you like them :) We are socking the new one very soon :)
For duckweed I use a cat litter shovel. 😊
Looking good!
thanks
Stunning 😍
thanks
Love this!!
yes it definitely is a good idea to wet the soil down first! learned from my mistake
glad i did 🤣🤣
oooooh, you took my advice for the comb, sooo cool! :-D really happy it works for you, too! :-)
So pretty!
really good
awesome video
I have 6 tanks im inspired seeing ur tanks thanks to make videos
awesome :)
when people mention vacuming gravel. I say that some people like to vacuum gravel, and others like to trim their plants.
Big fan of the API Master Test Kit.
Love ur stuff
Beautifull scape😊
Bravo from Romania
I think you are supposed to leave no standing water, because algae, fungus, and mold can grow in standing water. I believe you are just supposed to moisten the substrate and plants everyday after the initial planting. Have you ever read her book? There’s a new 5th edition out now. The dry start method can take up to 2 months. Nowadays everyone wants a tank set up now. Patience is no longer seen in this hobby. We love you across the pond. Thank you for sharing. I enjoy watching your streams and your accent.
If I tell you: I think you should puncture your tires before riding your car, and I believe that it will go faster that way. Does that make me seem confident in what I’m telling you to do?
Hi, I really like your aquarium creation. You have and feel Feng shui
I'd like to see you do a peapuffer setup :) I really want to do that one day when i stop spending money on my discus tank lol.
Substrate looked Really good before the fine sand...!
Hey MD, love your tanks and these videos are one of my favourites
Can you make a video updating the angelfish tank
yeah soon
Thanks!
Yeah nice I wanted to do this too 😁
25:10
Ramshorn snails are excellent at keeping algae on glass to a minimum.
Greetings from Malaysia. I have been following your videos on tank setups for quite a while, and I was thinking of asking you whether it's suitable to use top soil in a fish tank. Great man. Thanks again.
Best ytber ever!!!
thanks 😂😂
Another great set up, love your work. Just a not circles don't have corners lol
I want to see a clip of the shopkeeper when you bought that comb
hahahaha. Cheeky. Amazon ;)
amazing...
Best way to do a freshwater tank!
Amazing as always! Any recommendations for battling with diatoms??
Awesome
I think you might have to move if u keep making more tanks lol, keep up the great work man!
Every time you do a scape it always looks so perfect and things so even and nice but when I do it things look uneven and out of place 😆. Guess it's all part of the learning process.
Would be very interesting to know how the tank would have looked after a year or two...
Hi MD, nice tank. I was wondering when will you show our friends timy, pancho and the rest of the gang... miss them
