- Hey guys! Hope you enjoy my reaction to 'Cruel Intentions' (1999) - this one was a WILD ride. It took me a while to figure out what kind of movie I was getting myself into, but once I just let it happen - this is HILARIOUS and has some shocking moments that just can't be replicated.

SMG’s acting ability is so underrated. Her mean girl is iconic. Wait till you get to season 5 of BYVS, performance is both phenomenal and devastating.

I believe Cecile in the novel is suppose to be around 15 and just out of convent school, so they tried to make her here extra childish and naive, but it's just too much 😂
A really good "mean girl" that comes close to Kathryn would be Courtney from Jawbreaker, it's actually released the same year as Cruel Intentions (1999) I think it's worth a watch! Also, Darla from Buffy is also there, so that's a plus

I think the reason he falls for her is because she didn't fall for his games. She called him out and challenged him.
I think Kathryn is undeniably a bad person, but she's very much the product of her environment. She remarks that she hates pretending to be someone she's not, that men are praised for their sexuality whereas women are only decent if they're chaste (Annette) or naive (Cecille), and it's clear she feels contempt that she's routinely cast aside for more "acceptable" women. This is why Sebastian choosing Annette is the final blow to her. He was her equal, and saw the sides of her she hid from the world. Still, he discards her. It's quite telling that during the eulogy Kathryn says "He'd want me to say 'Kathryn, I'm sorry'". She doesn't believe Sebastian would apologise to her for his actions. Instead, she apologises to herself. She might be a manipulative sociopath, but it's clear she's a pretty damaged person as a result of the society she lives in which would condemn her (and ultimately does) for being herself.
I actually feel sad for her character. She looks confident about herself but you could see that she's really insecure for all that rejection and in order to get rid of it, she chose to turn those "pure" and "innocent" girls into her.
Not to mention that despite of Sebastian being the worst fcking person ever existed, someone still loved him wherein as for Katherine, everyone ditches her for someone else.
Another good example of this character type is Cersi Lanister.
@@Fe22234 Cersei is far different. She is delusional and utterly selfish, Kathryn is perfectly conscious of her own behaviour.
I don’t justify anything Kathryn did, but she was wanted the life Sebastian and Court could have. They get to sleep around and their bad boy behaviour has no consequences. Kathryn turns to drugs, cruelty, and even implies suicidal thoughts because she is sick of the double standards and having to act the part that society wants her to be.
Also, I don’t know why this movie has us rooting for Sebastian. He is no better than she is.

It’s a total classic, as a 15 year old in 99 my friends and I saw it at the cinema like 3 times. Genius movie!
Great reaction. Just my take; I think the reason Sebastian falls for Annette, isn't just that she "made him laugh" through her funny faces. It was that she was his intellectual equal. He'd been messing around with, pardon the expression, "airheads" this whole time (good people, just naive girls he could manipulate). The only woman he had around him till then who could match him, and was possibly superior, was Kathryn, which was why she was "his love", as toxic as that was. Annette was a sharp, witty and intelligent woman, who also happened to have principles and morals, something Kathryn lacked. She showed him that it was possible to be intelligent without being evil and manipulative. The only reason Sebastian was able to get with her, was because he was genuinely falling for her. His usual manipulation, which worked with others, wouldn't have worked with Annette.
I was a junior in high school when this came out! Totally mind blown! Style, wealth , drama. Beautiful women, racism sexism, homophobia, so much more than the typical high school typical movie for 1999! This movie is a cult classic and completely opened up mind to old money youth
Whats even more great about Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe (Sebastian) is that they were boyfriend/girlfriend in "I know what you did last summer" in 97' and then did "Cruel Intentions" together as step siblings shortly after in 99'. That definitely came into play of being comfortable with each other regarding their scenes together and having fun with it.
Sarah and Selma Blair won best kiss at the MTV awards and till this day are still best friends. Sarah is one of her biggest supporters when it comes to her MS.

@benjaminroman916 No, they were never together in real life they've just been really good friends since before IKWYDLS. I was talking about their characters being boyfriend/girlfriend in IKWYDLS (Berry and Helen), and soon after, they did this movie together with their characters (Katherine and Sebastian) being twisted step siblings with sexual tension/games.
This movie has two of the most iconic music cues imo: the escalator scene & the big reveal at the end~^.^
This is one of those movies that my mother and oldest sister (10 years older than me) would watch all the time, when I was growing up, on our living room tv. So, I saw it a quite a bit when I was probably too young to be, but I didn't understand most of the movie until I rewatched it as a teen and even more as an adult~^.^
This is technically 1792's morals as translated through the 1980s and then remodernized in 90s 😂 So its twisted in a very strange way. I love it.
And redemption arcs are... probably something you should grow accustomed to 😅

It's a remake. Of a older movie. ( dangerous liaison) set in pre revolution France. Keanu reeves , uma thurman, Micheal phifer. Green Close and John malkovicth. The original was 80s . This is a modern remake set in America .

It is kinda crazy that the one big change from the text to make two of the love interests step siblings (Katherine is his sister in law in the original). But I mean clueless made the same change, so I guess it was just a thing in 90s adaptations of classic novels

There have been quite a few adaptations of the novel. The 1988 film was actually based on a stage adaptation of the novel, while Cruel Intentions is adapting the novel. There was also a version in 1989 (adapted from the novel) that Milos Forman directed with Colin Firth and Annette Bening.
Gossip Girl was basically Cruel Intentions: The Series. Even though GG was based in the books, it’s clear they drew a lot of inspiration from the Cruel Intentions characters. Chuck Bass = Sebastian from C.I, and Blair Waldorf = Catherine from C.I.
There is an episode in Gossip Girl that is just copied down from Cruel Intentions, episide 2x07.
Even if you don’t have dirty laundry to air, Kathryn would create some to suit her purposes.

Have you ever seen My So-Called Life? If you're ever looking for a short-lived (19 eps) bright-burning 90s show that makes you feel like a teenage girl again, keep it in mind for whenever you have the time. I think it's right up your alley.
"Valmont" is my favorite adaptation of this story, although "Dangerous Liaisons" does have some value as well. I think this was a big movie at the time, but with everyone knowing exactly that it would be a high priced soap opera in essence.
Reese is spectacular in "Election."

@@shuddle32 I definitely agree, Valmont is my favorite adaption too, and while many of the scenes are just as disturbing, they're more befitting of the time period and expectations. It's easier to enjoy Cruel Intentions as caricatures of the original.
Kathryn actually had feelings for Sebastian and when he fell in love with Anette that really hurt her . The second movie is a prequel and in it you can actually see why Kathryn and Sebastian turned out to be like this. Their parents are as evil as they are.
Annette and Sebastian were married in real life just after the release of this film which probably added to the chemistry.

This movie always had a large following - not surprising considering that it is a remake of a movie from 1988 called Dangerous Liasons (starring Glen Close, John Malkovich, Uma Thurman and Michelle Pfeiffer), Peter Capaldi and Keanu Reeves. Dangerous Liasons was based in a screenplay titled Les liaisons dangereuses from 1985 which in turn was based on a novel of the same name from 1782.
Regarding the story arc - well you have to look at it from a late 18th century perspective because that's where the original is from. Sure, they changed a lot of things, but at its core it's a story from late 18th century France, written 7 years before the French Revolution started.
If you enjoyed this movie I recommend to also watch the 1988 movie as well.

glad you liked it. I've seen the movie when it was launched and loved it. Here is an interesting fact : if you watch the movie really close you can see there is a great chemistry between Sebastian and Annette and I was thinking wow they are so good. How are they so good ? Funny thing is this : at the moment when the movie was filmed / launched they were actually married in real life so I think that made their acting even better.
Not quite. They actually started dating before being on the set of Cruel Intentions, but didn't marry until later. Ryan once crashed one of Reese's parties, which is where they met, but they didn't get married until a few months after Cruel Intentions was released (they married in June 1999, Cruel Intentions premiered in March 1999).

I first watched this as a young teen, and though there are redemption stories I enjoy wholeheartedly, this remains one of my all-time favorites. Perhaps, as with many such things, nostalgia plays a large part. That said, I have yet to find it's equal within it's genre in modern media. So as others have mentioned, this is based on an old French novel "Dangerous Liaisons" (not going to give the French title) set in the pre-revolutionary French noble classes. Transfer it to Manhattan upper class private high schoolers (yes, not yet in college) and this is what it becomes. SMG definitely makes the movie for me, and watching her play against type is phenomenal, unlike the Scooby movies where she comes across as Daphne the Vampire Slayer.
I still remember the first time I saw this movie. I was getting ready for a party and literally froze when they flipped to the funeral scene. 😂
If you've never seen Reese Witherspoon in anything, does that mean you've never seen Legally Blonde?! That better be on a To Watch list for sure! Also a couple other great movies with her from around this late-90's time are Pleasantville and Election.

You have to watch Cruel Intentions 2. It explains Sebastian and Kathryn’s characters in the first movie. Not a spoiler: But their characters are played by different actors. But they are both very good actors too.
no, cruel intentions 2 is pure retcon (in the first movie Sebastian's family is rich too, in the the second movie he is poor), plus that was supposed to be a series remake, then it was cut and changed into a prequel very poorly.
Their parents were in Bali. Have you seen Heathers? This was very entertaining, the disbelief, the kind of outrage, it was all very fun.
Reese Witherspoon movies you’d probably enjoy Walk The Line, Pleasentville, Freeway, Election, American Psycho, and Sweet Alabama. For SMG Simply Irresistible, The Grudge, and Scream 2. Also there was a Buffy movie that predates the show staring Kristy Swanson.

What a movie to react to. This is basically Dangerous Liaisons if it was set in high school, as such the characters are hyper-cruel and callous because they’re aged down from the aristocrats of the source material. That’s the first thing I noticed, that the characters in this movie seemed as jaded as people who’ve had a few decades of just being the worst to everyone. Frankly, it through me off just how off the charts evil they were to everyone right from the start. But as the story continues, I kind of just saw that’s the world they grew up in and that’s just how the people that were around them, just lesser beings.
Somehow the Sebastian character in DL is even worse.
I haven't seen Dangerous liaisons but I know that the movie is basically based on that just in a "modern" era.

Look, im 38, I watched it in the 90’s.. male abussive behavior was the norm, so we actually rooted for him because it was love.. we have learned so much in these years.. he was a bad person no doubt.. we didn’t see that as much back in the day, everything was forgiveable
This is a cult classic. One of those ‘rare’ remakes [of Dangerous Liaisons |’88|] that achieve that status.

I need everyone to stop saying this wasn't considered sexual assault in the 90's. I was 18 when this was released, so probably target audience, & that was clearly wrong even back then.
It was to show how evil sister was because brother did it, but didn't take it very seriously & then sister was the one to convince the poor girl that it was a good thing & told her she was so proud.
I think everyone agrees that it was wrong and at least to some degree coercive. I think people are pointing out that our cultural attitude and perhaps even to some extent legal understanding of assault was a higher bar to clear back then, assault implies force, it wasn’t commonly understood or agreed upon that manipulation of a girl that was inebriated and light coercion fell under the definition of force, even now it’s legally controversial
this movie is awesome. so fun and was fun to see it in high school. i like reese witherspoon and fell in love with her in late 90s when i saw her in, man in the moon. that is a MUST watch.
Judging by your greatest film list on Letterboxd, I think "Clueless", "Bring it on", and "The Crush" would make great reactions, if you haven't seen them.

And you are correct they don’t make movies like this anymore because creativity is dead. And Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon met on the set of this movie and got married and end up having two beautiful children. And are now divorced. And both have moved on.
Though Ryan Phillippe is a serial dater.
Unfortunately there was going to be a TV show a few years back which continued on from this (Sarah Michelle Gellar was part of it) but it didn't get past the pilot stage as various networks passed on it. :(

Love this movie, I've seen it many times. Great soundtrack, great cast, interesting characters, very funny, and Sarah Michelle Gellar is incomparable.
Sebastián is a product of rich, uninvolved, neglecful parents who found meaning in cruelity. He met Annette and learned what true friendship can be, that changed him. Yes he deserves redemption.
If you enjoyed Cruel Intentions and want to see more of Reese Witherspoon watch Fear. Its another cult fav of the 90s.

I saw this when I was 16 with my friends during a break from the ice rink I worked at (skate rental) and no one was at all questioning the issues you brought up. This was the time of neve cambpell, Party of 5, Dawson’s creek cast.. Freddie Prince jr. Julia styles.. and the movies in 97-2001 were pretty bad. None of them would be made today. But I remember thinking how shocking so much of this was at the time. And then years later I found out it was a retelling of dangerous liaisons. Anyhow. This movie was shocking but not at all against any trend. Then. In fact the scene with the counting crows music was kinda emotional at the time as a teen. Times have changed
SMG has some serious range.
If you enjoy movies with unlikeable characters then The Rules of Attraction is the movie for you. It’s also from the same period as Cruel Intentions and stars several youngish actors trying to break out of their wholesome image.
I've never met anyone in my life who thinks and behaves like the characters in this. And I'm glad.

Great reaction. The question of Sebastian's redemption is the whole point of the movie. Personally, I think he would have remained a terrible person even if he had lived or at least he would have had to work very hard to change his ways.
There's also a question about to what extent changing your character can redeem you from such terrible behaviour. Can somebody who has committed sexual assault, published revenge porn, set up and blackmailed people, and probably a lot more be "redeemed" just by becoming a better character in the present and future? There's still a trail of misery in their past, just a more and more distant past.

I love Blair Waldorf precisely because I love a well executed mean girl.
You should really watch Valmont before (or after) Cruel Intentions, to get a feel for how they are adapting around the original material. It also makes the caricatures almost to the point of parody in this version more enjoyable.
So this is one of a number of adaptations of the French novel in film, the most well known probably being Dangerous Liaisons from 1988 (though I guess technically it was based on a stage play version of the novel). Swoosie Kurtz was in both films, though in this adaptation it's more like a cameo. Glenn Close played Gellar's role, John Malkovich in Phillippe's, Michelle Pfeiffer in Witherspoon's, and Uma Thurman in Blair's. The novel and the 1988 version are set in France.

If memory serves, one of the sequels is actually a prequel which examines how the stepsiblings met.
Cruel intentions 2 (starring a young Amy Adams)
Cruel Intentions had a prequel and it showed how cruel their parents are. So apples don’t fall far from the tree.
The broadcast version deleted the kissing scene between Blair and Gellar. Annette and Sebastián married irl.
If you like this, I recommend the movie "Rules of Attraction". That's a college-aged satire that makes this look like Hannah Montana.
You need to do Cruel Intentions 2 (Its a prequal).
