  • The platinum 3776 is the flagship pen made by the Japanese pen and ink company, 'Platinum'.
They also produce the cheap and cheerful sketchers' favourite 'platinum preppy' and the brilliant carbon black ink that I love to use in my pens.
Today we're reviewing this pen, named for the heigh of Mt Fuji - but we'll see if it's really worth the hype.
In particular, how does the UEF nib compare when pitched against different nibs?
All these tests are completed in my Etchr A5 watercolour sketchbook.

Thank you for this great review ! I also love both my Lamy safari and TWSBI ecoT, they both fit my preferences... and my small budget 😆🖋️ 🖊️💰

I, too, had been looking for an ever finer nib as I tend to write small and on cheap paper (at work) so I gave one of these a try. For myself, I found it wrote too dry (despite various ink trials) and too scratchy. While I'm not a nibmeister, I have worked on my own nibs before so I undertook to increase the flow and smooth it a bit -- and honestly went overboard and now have a slightly scratchy (improved) F-M nib. Rats!

Haha that's unfortunate!! I'm finding it ok, sometimes too fine, not too dry for me though

Good practical and objective review Toby.
Part of the pleasure of art, for me, is using beautiful, well made, tactile tools, and pens are probably at the top of that list. The more expensive pens certainty don't improve my sketching though 😂.

I have a Pilot Falcon pen that I use for drawing. Previously I have left the pen inked with Platinum carbon unused for almost a year (because I was focused on drawing digitally), it didn't dried out at all when I use it again. Didn't know it was because of the screw cap. I previously thought screw cap is just for extra security feature to not accidentally have pen uncapped.

Excellent demonstration, I love the UEF stroke and does anyone know of an alternative to this fountain pen?

I don't personally have experience with alternatives, though I'm sure ther are some.

That was a very good comparison. Now I do love my Lamy Joy 1.1mm. But just for fun I got a Hongdian Black Carbon Fiber Fountain Pen Extra Fine Nib.
Does it lay down thick ink....no. But it is an excellent sketching pen. I use Noodlers Bullet Proof Black Ink as I do in all of my black pens. I love the pen and it's very affordable.

Very nice. I would have compared the line size to a Pilot Kakuno which is a real Extra fine & it’s Asian plus it’s cheap enough for line comparisons. If yours is thinner, it’s definitely Ultra Fine.
Western made nibs (aside from Kaweco) aren’t going to be anywhere close for comparison. I’d like to give that one a go tho’ just for the smooth reverse hatching … a bit costly tho’.
    Thanks for the review.

Lovely pen and a pleasure to own, but a little too dear for my skill level and pocket. I’ll stick with the Lamy and Sailor Fude. I do enjoy these reviews though ,thank you.

Oh, my! The Platinum 3776 Ultra Extra Fine is a little trop cher pour moi. But good review.

You can source a chart of different nibs - EF is similar in LAMY to many other brands - 0.3-0.4mm I believe - even the UEF is only a 0.2-0.3
