London Underground Four Lines Upgrade

- The four sub-surface lines of the tube - the District, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Lines - are being upgraded to be automatically controlled, as part of TfL's Four Lines Modernisation program (4LM).
We sent Geoff OUTSIDE of London for once to see the works taking place.
More on the TfL website: tfl.gov.uk/travel-information...
S stock can be seen outside London fairly frequently. They are built in Derby and delivered to London via Tamworth, Birmingham & the Chilterns, entering the tube network at West Rusilip. There's been at least one a week for six or seven years now.
As an ex Londoner for many, many years....I love these videos..Please keep them coming...
"High tech sticky label" - this is the secret behind our Tube
Secret of the CBTC upgrade ;P
High tech sticky glue ;)
I heard they spent millions designing them 😂
...and I thought Americans didn't understand sarcasm.
You won't feel a difference but you will hear it. The digitally operated motor control will pulse the speed of the train in order to maintain a specific speed. You can hear it on the Northern line train sets especially.
And watch how they stop too. They will literally decelarate to 0mph, precisely, promptly at the green line marker instead of slowly lining up. Very efficient. The only thing they could do to make it more efficient is if they open the doors at 2mph upon deceleration, just as they do with the Berlin(?) trains.
Anyway, one step closer to fully automated digital train control. No need for a driver if they add an infra red camera and a whole bunch of proximity sensors (line tresspass collision and suicide prevention system.)
Excellent video Geoff, I see you’re out and about again Geoff.
*you're
Is he? I don’t know Geoff
Thanks Geoff - nice to see news of the Subsurface Re-signalling work - been a long time coming.
This Thales system was mostly design out of technology used on the Vancouver Skytrains “Selectrac”. It has operated without a collision since 1985. UTDC and much later Bombardier developed a lot of the system years ago. Vancouver system uses twin leaky coax between the rail. 2 leaky coax due to the centre induction rain for the Linear induction motors used on most of the system. Extremely reliable software. Age of the trains are becoming an issue no, however they are beginning to refurbish the original mark 1 cars.
Two trains in Singapore under Thales SelTrac crashed into each other just last month, resulting in 38 injuries. Reason was due to software issues. Thales took "full responsibility" for the accident: www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/signalling-system-firm-thales-apologises-for-joo-koon-train-collision-assures
This was supposed to have been finished before the S Stock entered service. Only 8 years and several false starts later
At least there's more significant progress, unlike here in NYC.
They couldn't implement the automatic control whilst the A, C & D stockswhere still operating on the lines.
Loved the animations in this!
Great overview of these upgrades.
In the 60s rush hour Bakerloo line operated to Watford Junction rather than terminating at Harrow and Wealdstone.
And the north still use Pacers
Harry Todhunter They are going to be phased out within the next couple of years though!
I travel on them quite a lot.
They should've been withdrawn 10 years ago. Antiquated is putting it lightly.
and? You could have had the D Trains in service already 😉
1DABTube the point is that The North should have modern and safe trains too, not Pacers that are death traps!
The worst thing about this is that they aren’t being replaced because of the godawful ride, or the horrible rail squeal, or the noxious gases they spew, but because of the bloody toilets! I tell you, of they were complacent to the act, we’d still be using pacers when the Underground is fully automated and crossrail 2 is open.
I hope TFL consider further deploying DTGR like on the Piccadilly and Central lines when the NTFL is introduced the demand on them is huge and there are nowhere near enough trains to cater for the number of commuters at rush hour. Now I know that Crossrail will take some pressure off the Central line but the Central will still be incredibly busy and with all these housing developments in suburban London, its is quintessential to install DTGR on these high demand lines. The Central Line is really creaking at the seams, can't wait to see the back of the unreliable, ugly, dated 1992 stock which seems to breakdown everyday leading to huge gaps in the service due to cancellations.
I worked on this project for 2 years installing the OPO line side equipment (The grey tall and short sensor boxes in the 6 foot). I spent a weekend at old dalby installing the equipment for that very test train .
Thank you for your work.
It’s funny the trains have indicators
They don't
Mark StJust 1:45
Looks awesomely funny LOL
That indicates the train is being driven in restricted mode
I thought the same thing!
Yay! The subsurface lines are now ATO!
4:30 The S stock will have bug antlers now!
1:44 - Trains have indicators?
idk
everybody gangsta till the train uses the turn signal
@@defaultmesh everybody gangsta till a dead meme is resurrected
Just a sweaty try hard breeh
The pacers have indicators (not used)
We love the faster trains and you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Interesting stuff.
Signal replacement New York will never see as its system crumbles
Brendan A. MacWade The Subway already has CBTC-ATO installed on two lines. The L has been automatic for years and the 7 is in final testing and should be ready within the next year.
metropod And it’s also coming to the Queens Boulevard E F M R line soon as well
well, we had an opportunity to do something about that, didn't we... and we did nothing. The idea of elected democracy is if your leadership is ineffectual, you don't vote for them.
As someone who does all of their commuting during the rush hours in New York it really just depends on how bad the lines are. The 6 trains are terrible as they randomly go express after 14 Street. However most other lines are pretty reliable outside of the C and E lines which I’ve seen twice have trains running every 15 minutes even though it was during a time school’s got let out and the trains would be full of annoying students.
If they close a line between 12:00 and 5:00 in the morning, that wouldn’t disturb the line as much
We need more self driving trains!
Galsgow is gettign them soon-ish (wwwstadlerrailcom-live-01e96f7.s3-eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/filer_public/05/9d/059dc534-401b-4b42-b79e-6b5c04794ab9/2018_0920_media_release_metro_glasgow_en.pdf)
TFL loves you
Toronto is about to get full ATC signals on Line 1, but starting in sections until 2018/19 when it will be fully rolled out across the line.
I made a film about automatic track alignment at Old Dalby about twenty five years ago, long before the overhead and fourth rail supplys were ever thought of.....
The Victoria Line never had “traditional” drivers from the start back in 1967.
The automatic system is exactly the same as the current DLR (and very old) system... Good to see its finally being rolled out onto the other lines
Nope - this one is CBTC (wireless communication) not TBTC (the wires you see on DLR tracks). More reliable.
tyteen4a03 oh okay cool! I mean I guess you could say they have similar principles
They work pretty much the same, just different ways of figuring out where the trains are.
Hopefully the public will notice the difference - in the form of more frequent services!
The sub surface railway i think runs a great service, trains always seem frequent.
We have had a Thales system like this in Edmonton Alberta Canada for 3 years now and it has never worked correctly. I hope you have better luck.
Loads of teething issues for the Jubilee as well when it was first resignalled to SelTrac. They have years of experience now with the Northern also on SelTrac.
I can see this being an unreliable system maybe for a few years until it beds in.
Oh god that makes me hopeful!
Some of the tested systems here in UK do not work fully, yet.
tyteen4a03 The live date for CBTC has changed over to November now
They're going to do something like that in the Barcelona-Vallès line. I think it's CBTC too.
Despite the retirement u should do D stock vs S stock
Orlando Norman why?
great to see TFL using our fares and money to use. now i hope northern line gets upgraded stock.
S8 Stock seen in this video was much better than the S7, due to better forward facing seating, as well as those too tight to move the body long seats. Interesting how the service from Aldgate to Uxbridge has both classes, and the Amersham and Chesham trains are S8.
Nice and this same CBTC Seltrac system is being run on 7 train NYC MTA IRT Queens Line which operates R188 (new builds) & R142As (coverted to CBTC operation). Not sure if this will go to the central line since it has 1990s era CBTC ATO operation installed
And yet we in the North are still using Pacers on unwelded rails, signalled with local-box controlled semaphore. . .
Pray for the people of the North
HAHAHAHAHA UNLUCKY

Glad to see the newest S Stock getting ATO. Will it have ATP too?
Well...it’s high time to modernise Piccadilly and Bakerloo line stocks, I thought that this vid will be about it 🙇🏼♂️
POKWIŚ TV that’s the next underground project once this is done.
Well since the 4 lines are the sub-surface S stock lines that's not very likely. The 4 Lines of 4LM in case you are not clear are District, Met, Circle and H&C.
About 10 years away - Picc first, then Bakerloo in 2029 to coincide with opening of Bakerloo Lewisham extension.
The New Tube for London :P
Current Piccadilly stock is 45 years old...
That s stock was a test of a extension of the metropolitan line
Those transponders will be the Achilles heel of the system. A high tech sticky thing will not stop rain, snow, flood water or freezing temperatures.
You're aware this video is about improvements to the London Underground, right? As in, those high tech sticky things will be deployed... underground?
Hi Geoff another great video, when did you film this???????????????????????????????
When this is all finished can you please still do engerning works please because I love replacement bus service
Are you going to do a video when the new Tyne and Wear Metro trains come into service? 😀
I see the new trains on my way to work being tested there I Evan got a Glymce of the new cross rail trains it’s a magical sight
Itll be interesting
4:21 omg he's so fit
@Xerox quantum
Real hot stuff
Wtf
01:44 a tube train with turning signal on? ahah
Gonçalo Magalhães it's (probably) an indication that the doors on that side of the train are unlocked.
Gonçalo Magalhães indicators not turning signal.
birthday vid thnx
Has a single point of failure analysis been done on this system? It's all great when its working perfectly but what are the safeguards in place should the system partially or completely fail?
It's awesome, just curious about the outside of normal operation parameters. :)
The driver takes over, with reduced speed.
Bottom 2 lines are dark and half
Anyone else notice Sam is aggressively handsome?
isn't this just the ATC that's been introduced since 2000
We did a thing like this in Singapore. Within the year two of our trains rammed into each other.
metheth propbut Well this 4 tube line modernisation will use the same system by Thales. Will not be surprised if the same thing happens
2 LU lines already been using this for years
TIB980D Productions I would have to agree with you here that there is some sort of operator/human error. This controlling technology has been in operation since 1985 on the Vancouver Skytrain, without there ever being a train/train collision. Collisions are usually with thrown on tracks from overpasses (which caused the only minor derailment of one car). Collision with careless or suicidal people in stations in which the trains cannot stop in time. Currently Vancouver run 74 secs between trains during max frequency, however this can be increase to 54 sec. Driverless/computer controlled system is the way to go.
We did this on a line in Edmonton Alberta Canada. The Thales system hasn't worked right for three years, and the worst incident was twice a train got shunted onto a oncoming and occupied track.....
Vancounver skytrain uses the old alcatel system, not these new thales systems.
i wonder if they have to separately code each tag laid on the tracks or each one is manufactured with a different random ID# burnt into it and after laying you just run a test train along the tracks which reads the code from each tag and builds up a database of all tags with their location.
i rode on one of those trains today
1968 Victoria line czcams.com/video/JiSR9O8t5Bo/video.html
The line is equipped with an Automatic Train Operation system (ATO); the train operator closes the train doors and presses a pair of "start" buttons, and if the way ahead is clear, the ATO drives the train at a safe speed to the next station. This system has operated since the line opened in 1968, making the Victoria line the world's first full-scale automatic railway.[note 2]
The original signalling has now been replaced with a more modern ATO system from Westinghouse Rail Systems.[2][22] LUL claims that this is the world's first ATO-on-ATO upgrade.[23] The new system allowed a revised timetable to be introduced from February 2013, allowing up to 33 trains per hour instead of 27.[28] This in combination with the new, faster trains will increase the line's capacity overall by 21%,[22] equivalent to an extra 10,000 passengers per hour. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_line
www.trainweb.org/tubeprune/Victoria%20Line%20ATO.htm
Piccadilly line between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge? Doesn’t that effect the Metropolitan line?
But... Piccadilly. Tfl why are you ignoring Piccadilly
RealistikDash because is the tube.
"The new tube for london" explains everything. Before 2030 the Piccadilly Line (As well as the W&C, Bakerloo and Central line) will get automated trains with somewhat comfy seats, real time information (such as on Tfl Rail class 345) and airconditioning, seemingly as well as platform doors at almost every station.
There're not going to be any PEDs on the Piccadilly line.
but this vid is about the tube
Errr, have you SEEN the Bakerloo? The Piccadilly line's trains are in a much better condition than the loo but will get the new rolling stock first. Talk about unfair!
Damn, I wish the MBTA would do this on the Red Line.
And the WMATA
Ayy fellow Bostonian!
They can't because all of their trains are 10+ years old, we would have to probably wait around 2022 to even consider this.
Well I believe the Red and Orange lines are getting new subway vehicles in 2019 - in fact I believe they're being built right now.
yes in Springfield MA they are currently producing them. already the pilot cars are set in Wellington Yard.
About damned time. I remember when they announced it back in 2015 or so. Now on the Red Line there are the older 15 and 16 and 17 cars - those are rattle traps. But then there are the Bomardier cars that look as though they were built late 1980's, into 1990's. They're built well - but showing their age.
And the cars on the Orange line - definite 70's - come on wood paneling in the car?
How did it get there? Can you ride it back to London?
I'd imagine they're going to need a lot more trains in an ever increasing population, such as Londons.
Just like on the SkyTrain in Metro Vancouver.
installing the track based detectors will take a long time.
It will take a while, first section Hammersmith to Latimer road should be running by the spring
I think they should start with ATO on some of it and then switching to manual at a station, with signs saying “Start ATO” and “End ATO”
So will the trains those on those lines actually travel at higher speeds? I find the Circle & District lines to be insufferably slow
It's Jubilee,Northern and Victoria lines
How is an increase from 28 to 32 trains an hour, a 33% increase? 🤔
Number of passengers inside the train increased coupled with 28 to 32 tph increase gives 33%
I think the trains can go at a faster speed as well
Bigger trains + more trains, both adding up to a 33% increase in capacity.
That's exactly what I was figure out!
@Londonist, when you travel via tube do you use your Oyster card or contactless ?
good
Like the solution with RFID tags.
call me an old head but I really don't want to see the '72, '73 and '92 stock retire. I hardly use The Tube now but I have so many fond memories with them. I didn't even get to properly ride the '67 stock before they retired in 2011/2012
Silver_Arrow I think the 92 stocks will still be around for at least another 10 years
Was this at Melton Mowbray you say?
3:48 "With ATC signalling system on it". I thought the Underground was getting CBTC?
PapaQ different abbreviations.
1:34 And even here you see the Dutch company Thales +thethalesgroup
They also have to do the rest of Britain, if not, everything diesel standard gauge train can travel to from London without having to leave the tracks for any reason
QuarioQuario54321 one day. Hopefully not too late since we'll probably be dated by its across the country
Train in the sky will probably be a think in the future (not flying trains but tracks in the sky)
When this is all finished will they still do engeniring works on weekends because I love replacement busses on the circle and district lines please I beg you I love engineering works
Well, how about upgrading the bakerloo line which breaks down every two stations and uses antique wagons?
I had no idea that the S Stock has indicators. I thought that was just a tram thing
will they fit them on the isle of Wight tube trains 😅
paul nolan what does that have to do with this video?
Because they use old Tube trains on the IOW
i love the name of your acount because i love cats but i have to use my sister's channel, but on my laptop because i put in the same address as her. I wish i had my own channel, and i will defentetly put the word "cat" in it.
Bye!!!!
Hyper Husky make a channel then it’s free and easy
everything_is_depressing_123 none of the tube lines are narrow gauge, the Glasgow subway is though
Would of been nice If it showed the ATO in operation
I wonder if RFID tags are reliable enough with such a short window to transmit data at every measuring probe.
And still speed in MPH. At least they showed points under seats where to put chewed bubble gums.
We use MPH in the UK, not Km/h
Tom Jardine
I thought you guys use Metric?!
@@scythal We do... sort of. We're stuck somewhere between the two, milk and beer are sold by the pint, but petrol is sold by the litre (though we give mileage in miles per gallon). Road signage (speed limits, distances etc) is exclusively miles and yards.
@@walale12 Why don't you guys fully switch though???
@@scythal why bother? The current system works fine, and I don't think the taxpayer could stomach the cost of having all the road signage replaced
I believe Richard Kirby is Canadian. :)
Geoff Marshall is a complete pelican.
what! last time we checked he was an Ostrich! it's like he's a master of animal disguises!
You know when this is all finished will they still do engerning works please because I love engerning works most weekends please I loved replacement bus to
I hope they'll learn the lessons from Singapore. There was a Thales SelTrac related accident where two trains collided with each other: www.todayonline.com/singapore/joo-koon-train-collision-khaw-chides-signalling-system-provider-which-could-have-done . But at least Londoners are already used to full weekend shutdowns.
Does this mean there is still a driver onboard to operate the doors and such and the computer takes over, bit like BART/MUNI in San Francisco?
Yes - driver opens/closes door, driving is done by computer.
i think it's going to be automated as well, but for now there is indeed still a driver on board
System is capable of driverless but whether the unions will allow it it is another matter (see DLR)
its not the unions, its a legal thing. Autonomous closing doors have lawsuit written all over them
There are SO many trains which are completely autonomous, including the doors. No major problems have occurred that I know of.
69 likes and the 1992 stock will become 2020’s futuristic train
:)
Will the district line get any faster between say Dagenham and Mile End as currently it's so slow. Why is that and will these upgrades improve it?
There will be slight improvements in running times across the sub-surface network, but nothing significant. The main change is the proximity of trains allowed by the signalling system allowing more trains to run in the same distance of track, thus allowing an increased frequency.
Tasin Khan The trains will run on full power so they will get up to speed a lot quicker, but I can’t see major speed improvements as there is a lot of junctions, and bends
This is all great but what about the Bakerloo line, when the F is that going to be modernised? The trains are from the sixties
The trains are 72 stock, my understanding is that it will be done with the Piccadilly Line and that contract is waiting to be bid.
I agree, headroom is low, seats are small, air ventilation is poor etc, they seem outdated compared to the Metropolitan, Jubilee and Northern lines.
The lines roughly get modernised in rotation.
Is it in use yet?
What happens if the train fails to read the RFID tag? Is there a certain amount of failed reads before the train will stop? (it's not like it can pop back and try again if it's hurtling along)
The train is able to miss one tag. If it misses two consecutive tags it will emergency brake and probably go NCT to the VCC
My dad works at Upminister so he can get a chance to look at the new S Stock trains
Is it true that the S stock is capable of 100mph?
tsangpogorge no, top speed is 62 mph or 100km/h
This is Pelham 123.
So the antenna thing catches the cylinders If the S7 stock goes on the piccadilly line
This line was just a small village railway, and now people who live on OLD DALBY right next to it, don’t even know why it’s there 😂 some cool facts that this line features though small villagers know as Old Dalby Grimston ( also passes though saxelby woods mostly underground ) asforby Hill/valley these are some of the places were it is most often were I’ve seen it stoped on a bridge for some time, it’s also known that if you pass though old Dalby the bridge under it is hunted, soooo mysterious 😂 I often see London unground trains on there but I have also seen different trinas to maybe part of the London system idk, it’s just a small little line and people in the area don’t even know what it’s mainly used for 😂 this is all true as I live in the area, we all call it the old Dalby test track like he said.
the seats look like licorice allsorts
Sam Etchell is easy on the eye. ;)
Agreed, very tasty
The trains will still have operators?
