The characters and dialogue are really good and you can tell there is so much potential there but the reptitive gameplay is such a grind that it becomes difficult to sit through that. Hopefully we get another chance at this franchise but I would doubt it.

I am sure that they can fix the bugs. The skyboxes need some fixing, too but I think that that should be possible. However, the repetetive gameplay will remain. I however just grinded those repetetive task while listening to a podcast ^^ made it more enjoiable for me, so I didnt care that much about those. So, if they fix the technical problem it would be like a 7 out of 10 for me :D

I've been playing it for 20+ hours and I agree with the review..the forced repetitiveness to continue the story is annoying especially since the variety in the gameplay loop is below average. It's like a 6.5 for me thus far, but the constant crashing to desktop without any warning is impeding me from my enjoyment of the story. Based on how excited I was for another Mafia game..this is extremely disappointing and doesn't even hold a candle to Mafia 1 & 2. PS: I don't even know why they called this Mafia 3, because it's far from being a game regarding the Mafia.
TBH it is about the Mafia organized crime but not Italian organized crime.Lincoln was apart of the black mob which was a real group in the late 60's early 70's.and later on starts a commission with his underbosses to take down the Italian Mafia.so it's still Mafia just not Italian and I'm glad Mafia 3 focused on something other than the Italian Mafia.and to Mafia 3 story makes 1 and 2 look like child's play Mafia 3 story was superb.yea it's not perfect but it's a damn good game and I don't think repetitiveness is a bad thing when it is done right TBH.and there are some unique missions in Mafia 3.and it's a soild game it's like 8 for me overall I enjoyed it.

This game reminded me of Brutal Legend, as both start really strong and seem like they'll be great fun, only to suddenly reveal very crappy, tedious and repetitive gameplay that ruins what would otherwise have been a great experience. I stopped playing this game as soon as I realised the immense grind ahead of me.

xxXHellhoundXxx I'd personally love it if EZA would avoid this problem entirely and didn't have numbered scores at all - the Bad/Poor/Decent/Good/Great system is a perfectly adequate shorthand if a one-word/number summary is what you're looking for, and communicates far better what the review is actually trying to say about the game's worth. A 10 point system has never made any sense to me in a subjective system like reviewing. Old GT or IGN reviews are so bizarre - am I really trying to choose the difference between buying a 6.7 and a 6.9 game? I think it's time to face thatit's the content of the review - the positives and negatives a subjective-but-informed reviewer raises, how it is qualified, and how you the consumer interpret that - that matters, not the number at the end.
Weird that they didn't do a fast travel system. I'd say having to sit in the back of a bus would lead to some interesting conversations or even having one of those big ferries with a waterwheel would lead to some calming sights. They did it in GTA.
I've had the complete opposite experience with cops. They're beyond cheap for me. I'm killed in like 2 shots, they'll blow out my tires of any vehicle I get in almost right away, and even getting in a vehicle and driving away takes forever since he has to hotwire each one. If I actually get to drive away, it's not too bad, but rarely do I get that chance before I'm swarmed by like 1000 cops.

Yes every game is repetitive but not to this extent. Most games have repeated gameplay loops but make them less noticeable by mixing things up as you go, building on the mechanics involved in the loop and making the gameplay involved as fun as possible. Mafia 3 does none of that. It doesn't mix things up instead making you continuously do the same thing over and over again with hardly any break or variance, there's no real building on mechanics and thanks to the dumb as bricks AI and average at best gunplay and stealth design the gameplay loop isn't anywhere near as engaging as many others in the genre.
I agree with everything Huber said in this review. Good story, good world, good combat, but horribly repetitive and bad ai. I don't mind the money spent on it... (got it quite cheap on launch) but even with little to no expectations I'm a tad disappointed. If you're looking for an open world game with great atmosphere and good story, and can look past the repetitive nature of missions and side missions, give it a shot! Oh yeah, and the cars handle nicely and feel great, imo.

I personally rate it 3.5 out of 5 starts most of the positives are based around story the writing, the characters, the voice acting, and all that there are some positives to gameplay the gun-play is satisfying honestly more satisfying than gta v, the driving is smooth and in a way reminds me of mafia 2 but you can tell they have modified on that made it a little arcade like. Most of the negatives that people have that i personally didn't mind are based on the mission system reason being i've played games like this and enjoyed it so i'm not going to draw the line here because i enjoyed the game as it is. My biggest negatives with this game are the fact that there isn't a lot of interactivity like there had been in the previous games because I saw comparison's and they kind of bummed me out and there are a lot of technical issues from graphics, optimization, and bugs not a lot of AI activity compared to the 2015 demo that IGN had shown and there are some dumb AI
This games not bad, does a lot of things right and has a lot of nice little detail with some bugs unfortunately. tip...get it on sale and follow the story line, don't go off path because there's nothing to do and if you clear out a hideout outside of a story mission you'll end up back there the next mission, killing the same guys.
I could see a PC mod that removed the necessity of the "damage" missions and allowed you to get straight to the meat. Yeah the game would be half as long but it would be a much better experience.
I'm a bit tired of people praising the story here. Imagine if The Sopranos consisted entirely of one family killing everyone in another family. Every episode they go to a factory and kill everyone there, then they kill the boss, then they kill the boss's boss. Then they move on to a casino and kill everyone there. Then they move to docks and kill everyone there. And that keeps happening for 15 hours straight with 2 minutes of dialogue between each massacre. That's not a good story, that's a crap story and frankly it makes no sense, that's not how wars between families work, that could never actually happen. One guy with a gun can't actually kill every criminal in the city, that's some Batman level shit, that's not Mafia. It would look idiotic on TV, but you put in a game and suddenly the story "excels". It doesn't excel, it's stupid. The cinematics are good though.
After reading and watching other reviews, I still had to wait for your guys' to be sure I was right in not buying. On a selfish note, it feels great to hear Huber's words knocking a game that has a solid story but sub-par gameplay.
playing it at the moment and I am enjoying the game, of course it has some issues but its so hard to do a flawless game at this scale. So much detail in that world. Maybe I will get sick of it when I get towards the end but I think it deserves a higher score maybe 3.5 because 2.5 its like getting a D+, just passing and I think its more then just that. I like the review though since it has thorough explanations!
Anyone wonder if to get the definitive edition.. do it. They’ve improved the game by now adding the options like change clothing, the DLC is all fantastic and to break up the repetitive main story I took over a district then did some DLC and side quests. I would give it a 4 out of 5

I'm never gonna buy a game before reviews are up. I had thought that they'd at least make the boring parts optional. It is inexcusable to release an AA-title with this much repetitiveness in 2016. I thought the publishers had learned their lesson with games like Watch Dogs and the latest AC titles. (I haven't played the game myself)
the 30 fps lock for pc at launch immediately turned me off from purchasing. They have patched it since but definitely to little to late. It's 2016 and no excuse to have a 30 fps cap for any pc game and/or port.
Just seems like the budgets were put into the wrong places. Pumping tons of money into the Art and Rendering Engine department, does not a good game make when you skimp on the Gameplay Engineers and Game Designers

For me this is a great story, and game concept totally undermined by the gameplay design and some mechanics. Its a shame because this could have been a truly great open world experience that was fresh. I still play and enjoy this game and will remember it but damn its a shame that it will never be what it could have been. I think years from now people will look back and see this as "that terrible Mafia game." They did not do the story justice at all.
They clearly spent more on marketing than on developing this game. There's advertisement for this game everywhere, both on the internet and in the small European town where I live. They should've put money into development, had some more varied content instead of Assassin's Creed territory control shit.

I really don't get the saying "the city feels like a character itself". It kind of suggests settings aren't supposed to have qualities comparable to a character. Even then what attributes are being considered in such a comparison?

the ai in this dlc has improved as has overall enemy ai. stones unturned is great graphically, action wise and ai wise.

the 30 fps lock for pc at launch immediately turned me off from purchasing. They have patched it since but definitely to little to late. It's 2016 and no excuse to have a 30 fps cap for any pc game and/or port.
Mafia 1 was set in the 30's btw not the 20's.
Just seems like the budgets were put into the wrong places. Pumping tons of money into the Art and Rendering Engine department, does not a good game make when you skimp on the Gameplay Engineers and Game Designers
I personally loved this game it's not perfect by any means yea the AI is dumb and there is some technical issues but overall I didn't mind the repetitiveness.TBH there were some unique main mission stuff I liked TBH.i think when done right repetitiveness came be a good thing.i loved the story unique open world it was a damn good game plus I love the 60's I give it a 8.if your a fan of the godfather and Scarface games you'll like this TBH.
I might still get this on a sale, I've been hearing people saying the story is really great, and the setting seems pretty interesting

This seems like a middle market game that got way too large of a budget that they didnt quite know what to do with.

I made a review video on this channel, and it echoes Huber's sentiments. I found the game to be okay, but the gameplay was a letdown, for sure.
I agree it's flawed but I'm having a ton of fun with it. I easily rate it a three and a half,stars.
They should have spend the hours making and hyping M3 trailers by spending it on gameplay mechanics.
For me this is a great story, and game concept totally undermined by the gameplay design and some mechanics. Its a shame because this could have been a truly great open world experience that was fresh. I still play and enjoy this game and will remember it but damn its a shame that it will never be what it could have been. I think years from now people will look back and see this as "that terrible Mafia game." They did not do the story justice at all.

I really enjoyed this game despite it's flaws. Just like tge first two mafia games.
I feel so bad for Huber. The hype was real for this game and it's such a disappointment. 2.5/5 is a fair score that is so sad.

They clearly spent more on marketing than on developing this game. There's advertisement for this game everywhere, both on the internet and in the small European town where I live. They should've put money into development, had some more varied content instead of Assassin's Creed territory control shit.

I really don't get the saying "the city feels like a character itself".
It kind of suggests settings aren't supposed to have qualities comparable to a character. Even then what attributes are being considered in such a comparison?

Darkborne Lines Mafia 3 isn't that bad to be honest the story is really good as well as the characters and soundtrack the gameplay is really good to but the thing that makes the gameplay bad it the dreadful AI and the fact that it's repetitive but what game isn't

jsh020 Not entirely the Mafia games are nutritious for there story and characters anything else that's good is usually a bonus
