What I really like about the film is that the dude didn't find true love or defeat his enemies, his life just went on and we got to see a part of it.
"....and Donnie is stuck in a coffee can"
Nope......28% of him is on the Dude, 70% of him is scattered over the rocks.....and 2% of him made it to the ocean.
Actually, none of Donnie ended up in the water, because the wind was blowing inland.
you can't forget the tiny amout of him that ended up on the dude's glasses
"They're nihilists, they don't care about anything."
"That must be exhausting."
4:08 shows the best part of the movie. In the entire film, that is the only sleuth-like thing The Dude does, and it accomplishes absolutely nothing. I love it.
The movie does have a pretty deep meaning, in that it has a pretty straightforward one: Go with the flow, man. The Dude calls to mind many things religious; mostly Jesus' looks and Buddha's life philosophy. He goes with the flow, bares witness to the experiences life presents him, and then keeps on keeping on. He abides. We could all do better to be more like the Dude. Know yourself, take pleasure in the simple things, and just go with life. Anyways, be like the Dude or don't. It doesn't really matter. That's just my opinion, man.
+Tommy Meyer Hmm, I'd offer a different interpretation. The Dude has a good philosophy of going with the flow and not getting emotionally attached to anything, but surprisingly rarely follows it. The film's action is propelled by a recurring cycle: people trying to manipulate the Dude into some shenanigans, the Dude explaining why said shenanigans are not going to work and then getting involved in the shenanigans anyway.
Cracked suggested a parallel between the Big Lebowski and Alice in Wonderland. I think this is quite accurate. Alice sings a song at one point about how she gives herself very good advice but very seldom follows it. I think the Dude is very much like Alice in this respect, which makes me wonder why he's so revered.
themarquess I think he's so revered because even though he knows the shenanigans may not be a great idea, he embraces that they're sort of beyond his control and that he's going to have to get involved with them anyways. So, instead of running away from what he's gotta do, he accepts it and goes with it. It's a very zen buddhist kind of mindset: he knows who he is and he bears witness to the experiences life throws at him. And in the end he's a better person for it
Well, the Dude gets a broken TV, a ruined (and missing?) rug, a killed car, likely an assault charge brought by big Lebowski, Maude might charge him with the theft of the Urban Achievers Foundation money rather than impugn the family name by outing her father, loses his friend, Donny resulting in an unfiltered exposure to Walter, untold security deposit issues with his landlord, and on and on. Yet, he gets laid on the positive side, and still has his Creedence. Need balance I suppose.
Own Petard Shit happens in life man. A lot of that stuff was well beyond the Dude's control, so I don't think we can use those misfortunes as warnings not to follow the Dude's lifestyle. I doubt Maud would drag the Dude through a BS theft charge considering he's already done a lot for her and she doesn't seem like an evil person or particularly worried about her father's good name. And if anyone were to get assault charges from the big Lebowski it would be Walter! (who has the dumbest luck of any person ever. He should have gone to jail or died a couple times in just the span of that movie.) Anyways, the point is that you can't control all the bad stuff that happens in life (and it will happen) it only matters how you handle it. And I think the Dude does a fairly good job. He's not perfect by any means. but in general I think his attitude towards certain things is one to emulate
One thing you missed - in the scene where Jesus Quintana is introduced, they are playing a song called "hotel california" being covered by a mexican band. That song was originally written and performed by The Eagles. Later in the movie when the dude is trying to get out of Malibu in a taxi, the taxi driver is playing The Eagles. The dude tells the driver that he hates the eagles, and the driver then kicks the dude out of his car.
Every analysis I've seen of this film has come to a completely different conclusion. It's a movie that seems to have a clear point and clear ideas, but when you have to explain them, they never seem to be universally understood in the same way by everyone. I suppose that's just another reason it gets as much praise as it does.
Also, are you planning on analyzing Terry Gilliam's "Brazil"? That is a film I need explained to me a bit more.
Keep up the amazing work Garyx Wormuloid!
Are you referring to "Brazil", or to "The Big Lebowski", because that is honestly a pretty fair explanation to either film.
I actually got the vibe that the dude was actually a misunderstood genius. I always thought there was a time before he became so relaxed. Like him trying to get his point across and nobody listened so he gave up and just became the dude.
i thought he was detective for real but he lost his mind he forgot his true persona by having second life. thats why there is no ID of him.
He does mention being one of the Seattle Seven, so he was clearly very politically active at one time... I imagine at some point he concluded that actively fighting against the system was futile, and that the powers that be would ultimately always win. I think you can even see that in his eyes when he sees George H W Bush talking about Iraq on the news at the beginning.
I think there's two ways you can deal with that kind of disillusionment... Either become bitter, cynical and jaded about the whole world, or you become The Dude. You take it easy and just abide... The Dude's lifestyle could even be taken as a form of passive resistance against the system. Just simple non-participation.
This was meant to be a really brief reply but then I started thinking about it and it got kinda deep... And now I need to watch the movie again. 🤣
The script notes, apparently say he was an heir to the Rubiks cube foundation, and that is how he has been living, off of that money. I’m guessing by the time the movie rolls around, he is struggling somewhat.
@@jessehcreative I think they deliberately cut that idea as it removed some of the mystery about him... He does say he was in the music business, and roadied for Metallica briefly.
"Hallowed be their names" "Vietnam, the largest moon of Jupiter" YOU ARE KILLING ME THERE IS NOTHING IN THE UNIVERSE BETTER THAN THIS CZcams SHOW
As a minister of The Church of Later Day Dude, I approve this interpretation. Abide on dudes.
@@atleys6519 Oh you know man, it's complicated... lots of ins... lots of outs... I'm keeping up a pretty strict regiment to keep the ol noodle limber. I might be channeling a little more Walter than I'd like, but.. come on man this isn't Nam!! There are rules and in the League game of life... some things really need to be marked zero.
I've literally seen this movie over 100 times, yet you guys have added so much more to it. Amazing job.
Speaking of deconstructed noirs, Taxi Driver?
Remy Karns there is a book called "I'm a Lebowski you're a Lebowski"
"the type of war that still lives in its parents basement" fuck
Earthling cinema saved my soul. That's how fucking good it is!
+Wisecrack I'm going to reply later with a witty comment, but first a nap.
I'm ashamed to admit I had no idea this film was a parody. I'll have to check out the original. Thank you for enlightening me!
honest moment here, the fact this movie never went anywhere, never progressed or concluded, the story just.... happened, utterly broke my Aspbergersness. 5 years later, smoking a cigar after a weird strange week of events strolled past my life... It made sense. Life is just strange. and thats normal.
Amazing as always. Keep 'em coming :) We love Earthling Cinema. It just gets better every time.
Would love to see Wormuloid's interpretation of El Topo. Also, why no mention of Sam Elliot's awesome moostash? Sure puts your eyebrows to shame.
I'd actually be up for El Topo, though the second half of the movie just just a straight-up loose interpretation of the Bible.
You guys are amazing, Best channel on youtube, I love every episode of every series. Im not good at interpretations but thug notes and this series, oh god so good. Since I started watching you videos every book and movie are so much better. I started enjoying the literature classics. Love you guys. The Dude from Poland ;D
the act of finding meaning in the big lebowski is so ironical
These great analysis's are why I love this channel so much.
Yeah, well that's just your opinion, man.
"If you scratch the surface looking for meaning.." LOL that part had me dying. I actually became ordained yesterday. Dude
Probably the most entertaining one yet. No matter how many times I watch this movie or somebody analyzing it, there's always something new.
great wrap up been searching for one for days and i finally got recommended this hands down the most knowledgeable about the film or at least explained it elequantly
I gotta say, I've been loving every episode of this
What a fantastic video.
Informative & witty!
I love this videos, keep em coming, great content.
20th anniversary, had to watch the movie! This is the BEST and funniest summary of it I've ever seen! And WISDOM nicely tucked in there. BRAVO! I'm watching it again, lol!
Yo, i have seen this movie probably 50 times, seen countless reviews and reactions of it, and yet today you taught me something new about it! I had no idea about The Big Sleep connection. Thanks Dude! Abide.
It's about being content with your lot in life. Doing non-doing. The flawed Dude someone manages to still exemplify such a level of goodness that it attracts a satisfied, heavenly attention.
Best one yet! Bravo!
subscribed. this is the best the big lebowski review EVER
The Dude abides.
My all time favorite movie. I was hoping you guys would get to it at some point!
Earthling cinema is the greatest series ever. It deserves its own channel.
Donny is stuck in a coffee can. Lost it there...
I'm late...but that reminded me of *Preacher,* when the angels say they will put Genesis back into it's domicile... and Cassidy says "because it lives inside a coffee can" 😂
I think you give some of the best analyses of certain movies I have ever heard (Fight Club, Mean Girls, Trainspotting). So far, I think this is your best. Thank you.
This is my favorite channel by far. Nothing even comes close. It would be awesome if you guys could do Pan's Labyrinth from del Toro, or even a Bong Joon-ho film like Mother or Snowpiercer. Also, when Birdman comes out on DVD/Blu-ray, that would be cool to see as well.
Well done sir. I was enlightened and made to laugh heartily!
I want to comment on all your videos to exclaim how underrated they are, you guys rock!
Thank you! Best show devoted to analyzing cinema.
Subscribted for Thug Notes, stayed for Earthling Cinema. Keep up with the great work!
Love your channel. It'd be awesome if you guys did an episode on Le Samourai or Drive.
Do something on snowpiercer
yeah really nothing hidden there, they were very overt with their message. Still a good movie tho
Your reviews are amazing bruh
That's like your opinion man.
excellent review!
I've just discovered this channel this evening...awesome concept. I'd like to suggest "Dog Day Afternoon".....just to show that Earthlings can survive just about anything as long as they can order in pizza.
"...and Donnie stuck in a coffee can"
No, he is out of his element
Shut up, Donny! You're out of your element!!
-Walter Shobcak
(Sorry, I forgot how to spell his last name)
"Blue in the tentacles" . . . Love it!!
These are amazing! I'd love to see them do Star Wars, Aliens, and Jurassic Park.
I have been waiting for this since earthling cinema started.
Brilliant. This video will abide -- in my "Favorites"
Happy 25th Dude!
I like how this was humorous but had some low key good points
hahaha, this is brilliant.... nice references too.... so glad I found this channel ....
"... and Donny is stuck in a coffee can" :))
Awesome review of an awesome classic. Do Office Space next? :O
A great fun vid. Thank you
Garyx totally nailed bowling. Which I say as an avid bowler
Love this dude!
I think it would be rather fitting to see 1979's Alien on here!
Garyx, you have single-handedly redeemed CZcams for me. Can you guys do The Grand Budapest Hotel?
THIS IS SO GREAT
Good job guys. Suggestion: snow piecer. Keep up the awesome work.
well...... at least we made it to mars ;P
Love it! Please tell me you have seen Sopranos at least 3 times through completion... Then please do a season by season episode of the literally best show ever... Then how about the Wire??
Do 'There Will Be Blood'
Well done, I really liked this one. I'm not religious but I would consider taking up Dudeism. I'll do it just for the weed and Kahlua.
*"...the type of war that still lives in it's parents' basement"* fucking gold
This was hilariously awesome!
Awesome video.
this is literally my favorite movie
I love the fact that you've referenced dudeism.
thank you for fixing the cable
I watched this movie yesterday. It was so funny, I couldn't help but laugh my ass off. 😂
I feel like people don't talk about it enough. What a grand parody. ❤
I think you guys should totally do Inherent Vice, Starred Up, Birdman, Whiplash and Nightcrawler. Those would be straight up magnific analysis
i'm filled with peace with this
Great job
Wow. Never thought of it like a dark comedic noir film. Accurate
1:25 The dude absolutely did get a new rug
Ah fuck it Wormuloid, lets go bowling.
I've always thought that nobody has been able to find the "true" meaning of the Big Lebowski because the movie wasn't supposed to have a meaning. You have someone like The Dude, Walter and Donnie who are participants in these weird happenings but they just don't seem to care or stop for a minute and think: "what in the fuck is actually going on".
They just go with it as if it wasn't surreal the fact that a slacker and a war veteran are somehow involved in rescuing a kidnapped woman and then later some weird "nihilist" german fucks litearlly set his car on fire. They go with it so hard that they go confront a 15 year old kid, threaten him and destroy his neighbor's car.
nice eyebrow :b lol about time you guys upload i was waiting for thug-notes 101?
Fantastic!!
Wise crack and earthling cinema are way out of their element and entering a world of pain
Great video, even better movie.
Love it!
Fan theory: Donnie is actually Mr. Pink from "Reservoir Dogs," but in an alternate timeline where he chooses not take up crime
"donny is stuck in a coffee can" i Snorted
"THEE BEFOULED THE SACRED FLOOR COVERING!"
you should do one on inherent vice which is arguably a great companion piece to this
Isn't the hidden meaning just, that the rug tied the whole room together...
+GoAway LeaveMeAlone Not hidden, it was stated.
You truly understand
Yeh, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
lol
Oh yeah, we'll that's just like, your opinion man.
