  • The Scarlet bugler penstemon is an upright, easy-to-grow plant, reaching 2-3 ft. high, with gray foliage and striking orange-red, bugle-shaped flowers that bloom in spring. Native to dry coastal and inland foothill zones of California, this plant is adored by hummingbirds and pollen and serves as a larval host plant for caterpillars. Ideal for California native and Mediterranean gardens, it thrives in well-drained soil, full sun, and with minimal summer water. Its flowers can rise 4-5 ft. above the plant, making it a stunning accent among rocks and pathways.
