    When I was younger, I thought that rattling sound on KoRn albums was maracas/aux percussion. I realized when I got older it's just Fieldy beating the fuck out of a detuned bass. His playing and style are essential to the KoRn sound.

    Fieldy's bass is meant to be listened to on a subwoofer and korn in general. That really brings out his bass tone and playing. He isn't a technical player although he can jam if he wants to and lay a solid groove, which alot of bassists cant. I think his style is completely unique and sounds amazing but you absolutely need a subwoofer to appreciate it and play it loud. He adds a ton of thickness to korn's sound that just makes the entire sound epic. Listen to the song pretty on a subwoofer for an example

To really hear it you have to have some good speakers AND preferably a subwoofer. Otherwise your stereo won't properly reproduce such low notes & some notes won't be heard at all.

    • @EyeShotFirst
      @EyeShotFirst Před 3 lety +17

      Yeah. Most of those iconic tones people talk about, sound kinda crappy isolated. Mixing and adjusting the frequencies of each instruments is often as important as how well the musicians play. It's an artform in and of itself, that can fuck up whether or not an album sounds good. People need to realize that these stems were never meant to be heard on their own. The issue with the way Korn plays is you have to compromise most of the bass's mid and upper lower ranges in favor of the 7 string guitars. Fieldy ends up getting the sub frequencies and some of the higher frequencies, which actually works out wonderfully. His percussive style of playing ends up being like another drum track.

      Nah. He completely scoops the fuck out of his tone. He says he boosts the highs and lows, and completely dials out the mirdage on his bass' preamp. He also dials out the mids on his amp. On top of that, he also mics up the horn of his cabinet.

    i think it sounds fuckin' awesome by itself, just as it sounds in the song.
    Character and vibe are infinitely more important than having a "perfect" (i.e flat) tone, imo. Cutting out the mids works perfectly for korn's music; if they added more mids to the bass it would mask with the guitar and the overall picture would be less punchy and tight. The way the lows shudder and the buzz pokes out the top almost makes it sound like 2 different bass parts, a sub and percussive highs. Which leads to a really cool sonic result. As for the supposed "sloppiness", that's part of the appeal, and actually, you try to play that part exactly like that. Not as easy as you might think, especially with the dynamics of how hard each note is hit, etc. He also uses slides and scrapes very effectively for taste.
    I'd like to hear a single recording by any of these elitist naysayers who are bothering to take the time to comment here about how bad it sounds to them, which makes me feel as hyped as this does.... would probably hear some passionless yngwie malmsteen wannabe shit "it's faster so therefore i am more skilled"

      Hey, friend :) It sounds really strange when isolated... but contextualized, works really well . When you listen to the album you can notice that they use the bass, not as a way to make your brain follow the beat, or to set the tempo. It works as a percussive weapon, and as said by Ani Invi, as a way to set the mood. I've listened to this album ("Follow the Leader") many times, same with "Issues"... since my teenage years. When you listen to the bass in isolated form, you can't really understand what he's doing... but put your headphones on and them, specially with the vocals and guitar part - bang. Suddenly it makes sense :D

    As a long time bass player, here’s my take on Fieldy. He may not be the best, or dare I say good bass player, but his unique and recognizable bass style is essential to KoRn but makes him a great bassist. Like Lemmy and Dee Dee, you don’t have to be good to be great.

    I love the tone signature, very unique. It’s a very detuned bass, 5 string but detuned to the point where the strings are flopping. Very, very underrated bass player with obvious Flea influences as he talks about here. I mean, high marks for originality and creating a playing style that is identifiable. I’m a guitar player and I track with a heavy gauge pick and it definitely forces me to be creative on the bass to create the sounds I’m going for. Watching interviews with great musicians there are quite a bit of technique variables that create the signature of the player. Dime using a Floyd Rose to smoothly find a note, Zakk pinching artificial harmonics, Eddie tapping a line anywhere in the song he wants… Fieldy has developed that for himself, can’t respect that enough.

    You cant hate his tone if you dont understand the hip hop influence on their music. Its scooped way out for a reason. The guitars are mixed to fill out the mids where his bass isnt. Thr bass is meant to punch hard and add a low end which makes every Korn song thump hard af.
