    Oh, my goodness. I wish the nurseries put some of this info on the seedling labels. No wonder mine have turned up their toes in no time at all. I'll start again from scratch in the morning. Thank you!

    I usually buy dill plants at a nursery but I had a pound of it from Azure and thought I would try it out. But first mistake you said put it in a stationary spot. I threw mine in a wash pan so I will have to wait and see but I will remember for next year.

    I added a whole package of dill seed into a fairly big pot, it is way big, like bigger that yours, and now I am not sure how to harvest, the stems are very thin and fragile? I just don't know how is is best to harvest or cut back so I can get some strong stems???

    • @thailandexpat7948
      @thailandexpat7948 Před rokem +1

      Are the stems falling about? Cut the tops and use and allow it to grow again. Don’t cut more than 1/3 of each stem…to allow for it to grow back. Is your dill getting enough sunlight and nutrients?

    I love dill and im trying to grow some myself in my sunny garden. I bought the young plant from a nursery and as you said it doesnt seem to like the transplanting. It seems to be hard to grow these. I will try to water it less often, i was doing it every dry day. How do you measure the ph of the soil?

    • @toddripcity7878
      @toddripcity7878  Před 2 lety +1

      You can buy a PH & water stick on Amazon on ebay. They don’t cost too much. When u bought your plant, was it sitting putside already in full sunny location or was it in a shady area?

      I can never grow dill, I love dill but it always dies, I planted 2 little dills that I got from Lowe's in to a big planter with Rosemary, basil and curl parsley and again both dill plants died after just 2 weeks.
      It doesn't matter if I plant them in the sun or shade, I never tried directly in the ground though, I'm in hot Houston TX.

    Thanks for your excellent tutorial. I would like to ask, I bought some dill plants the other day at a nursery and they had the yellow flowers on them. What does this mean? Are they at the end of their growing cycle, should I cut them off, should I return them? Thanks very much.

    • @toddripcity7878
      @toddripcity7878  Před rokem +2

      Yes….it is starting to flower…not a great situation if you want to continue to harvest the dill/foliage for use. The plant will focus its energy on flowering and setting seed. I would return and get one that is immature

    Growing dill for the first time this year. Last year I made several batches of refrigerator pickles and had to buy fresh dill every time. I realized I'll save some money by growing my own. I bought two different seed varieties, one just says dill and the other is called mammoth dill, which variety do you grow?

    • @thailandexpat7948
      @thailandexpat7948 Před 2 lety

      I’ve grow all the varieties at some point. I do like Mammoth because it grows so tall and big, but I’ve mainly been growing Bouquet lately because I’ve been harvesting the seeds and haven’t needed to go out and buy any new seeds.

    I grow it at home, and if I do not keep water at the bottom (or it dries out) - dill strarts to fall and feels not good. So, I keep it wet all the time. And recently tried to grow it from seeds indoor, and after sprouting the stems are quite week and they fall on side. What could be the problem?

    • @toddripcity7878
      @toddripcity7878  Před 2 lety +1

      Nice! dill is great to always have. btw, seems that there may be an issue with your soil composition/too quick draining. Also, when was the soil last changed out or u used fertilizer? ….tell me a bit more! thx and best of luck growing!

      @@toddripcity7878 I tried to grow it on pure compost. First two pots I started outdoors and they grew quite well, then I moved it inside for winter. They require a lot of water, otherwise they fall. Then I tried to plant new seeds inside, on mix of soil and compost 1x1, and one more on purchased organic soil mix for seedlings. And they do not grow well inside, weak and after they grow few inches they fall. Still growing but stems are too weak to hold them vertical.

    • @toddripcity7878
      @toddripcity7878  Před 2 lety +1

      Ah, ok. I did an experiment a few years back with different grow lights. When my dill was in front of the cheap &$19.99 light, it too would fall over. Also, I used miracle grow potting mix with higher intensity Philipps grow lights and my dill would stand up straight and strong. I think compost soil may not have enough nutrients to grow your stock thick and strong. Maybe consider nutrient rich potting mix and regular feeding of plant food. Also , if indoors - needs good grow lights.

    I do not understand. Other channels say to thin the seeds 12-18 inches apart, and others don't seem to thin the seeds at all. I do not know if i should thin my dill seedlings.

    • @toddripcity7878
      @toddripcity7878  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Let me clarify appropriately: if you have limited seeds and/or want to have consistent harvest throughout the season and you want to also harvest the seeds at the end of the season - then you would want to thin out your crop of dill and keep the strongest of your dill. Also, in locations where you get damp or moist environment which may cause mildew or mold conditions, you would thin out your dill to allow for better air flow circulation. In my particular case, I have lots of excess seeds and plenty of buckets and locations to plant bunch growing of dill, so In my situation i bunch grow my dill, harvest the lot while it is not fully grown for canning purposes and immediate use for cooking.

      In my situation, i’m growing dill indoors in a 8inch diameter pot under a grow light.
      I don’t plan on transplanting them at any point.
      I’d like to maximize yield.
      How, if at all, should i thin them?
      They are just now developing true leaves

    • @toddripcity7878
      @toddripcity7878  Před 5 měsíci

      Indoors given you are using only an 8” pot consider only thinking 2-4 inches. When I’m growing my dill outdoors I thin about a foot apart because I let my dill flower and collect the seeds at the end of the season. In larger pots indoors , I tend to thin about 6-10 inches apart. U should do both ways. This ur pot 2-4 inches apart and try another pot without thining - bunch growing and see given your pot size, indoor situation, grow light which method works best

      …the bigger issue is that hot weather and too much direct sunlight will speed up the bolting/flowering process. You want to keep it from flowering as long as possible. Maybe a partial shady location or area of ur garden that gets less direct sunlight & has a bit of a breeze/airflow if that’s possible

      Correct, but more importantly to just get the sweet spot… still needs semimoist soil. Think good drainage. Avoid yellow leaves. Consider using a watering stick to know when to warer

      For majority of herbs most people grow : we are looking to grow and use for culinary reasons. If the plant bolts, than those herbs begin to flower to change into seeds which in turn changes the leaves texture & flavor, eventually become most often unusable for cooking in the fashion that most people tend to use

      It should still sprout and be ok. Its growing here in Thailand and were close to the equator. Try starting in jiffy peat pellets inside and south facing window. Then transfer directly into a pot outside after its 2-4 inches tall. Make sure to use like miracle grow potting soil or similar. You have an area that gets morning and early day sun but partially shade in afternoon? Here in Thailand herb and lettuce growers have to use elevated netting or clouding plastic to keep too strong sun rays from frying the more sensitive plants

      Mmm…should have sprouted by now. Did you plant in your garden or in pots? How was your soil? Did you plant your seeds too deep? If planted in pots, did you put the pot in a dark place, until it sprouted? Did you adequately water your soil? And then not disturb the soil until first sign of sprouting? If planting in pots, maybe cover the top of the pot with plastic wrap or cardboard so the soil does not dry out.Maybe try some different package of seeds

      @@annee5582 Let’s try from another seller. And, I believe you stated you started in seed starting trays. How about using seed starting potting mix to help out germination. Also, buy a few jiffy peat pellets and start some in those mediums. Prior to planting seeds, water the soil, but not waterlogged. Then put in a container/box to keep it dark and less airflow. This will stop the soil from drying out & help with germination
