      Bentoni and to be fair...it’s exactly what I think 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ I totally get it if you got your tattoos before you were famous, or your friend from high school is learning so you help them out. What I DON’T understand is if you can afford to go to the best tattoo artists in the world WHY DON’T YOU?! 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ I would kill to be tattooed by the best. I only have two swallows, very simple lines. I still looked at portfolios for months and chose an artist here in Scotland who is booked for months in advance. I paid triple what I’d pay at any other shop. Sure, it would maybe look just as good BUT they were so important to me, I wanted the best 💖👏🏻

      Matthew Fogarty No, but I’m a military brat ☺️ all my family are either army or navy. Before modern technology, sailors would know they were close to shore (home) when they saw swallows, as they only fly so far out - hence its association with sailors. I’ve lived all over the world, my dad is now in the Ministry of Defence and my brother is still in the military. I have one for me, and one for them to remind me we’re never far from being “home” ☺️

    I think another factor is when an artist is approached by a celebrity with a concept they’re to scared to admit that they can’t do it, like they don’t want to be the person that turned down a celeb so they do it even if they aren’t positive they can properly execute it

      Then go check out some shops in your town. Look at their portfolios, chat with the artists if you can. You'll get a feel for where you're comfortable & the kind of artist you want.

      Wendy Kuma I respectfully disagree, tattooing is a deep art form with many different styles and variations. So say an American is doing Japanese art, the American might finish and think it’s spectacular. Take that same piece to a person who grew up doing Japanese work and I guarantee that he can dissect that same piece and name many things that are done wrong and could be done better. It’s perspective and line of knowledge that determines how good it is.

  • @McJaews
    @McJaews Před 5 lety +300

    Here's another theory: 80% or more of ALL tattoos are "bad". Just like how most restaurants are sub-par, and most bands are run of the mill, most tattoo artists are mediocre. They have bad days. They have a living canvas and no eraser. So in essence, the question is flawed. Why do celebrities get bad tattoos? They don't. They just get the same tattoos as everyone else. It's just easier to point at them because they're more exposed to the public. It's true that they should be able to afford better artists, but that supposes that you can judge artistic merit on how expensive they are, which isn't the case (as was pointed out by artists in this video talking about "celebrity tattoo artists"). It's a form of survivor bias that the tattoos we see - and notice - on regular people in tattoo mags, at conventions, on the beach, at the gym, whatever - we notice because they're good. When they're muddy, illegible, poorly placed or poorly designed, we tend to ignore them or forget them.

    • @BollocksUtwat
      @BollocksUtwat Před 5 lety +28

      Your thoughts are flawed in that you believe that the rate of quality versus terrible tattoos is fixed, like the mixture of toxins in the air in parts per million. In reality the rate of shitty tattoos is based in large part on the way you decide to get them and how careful you are about picking your artist. Celebrities have huge amounts of money. They have every advantage. If most restaurants are shit celebrities don't have to experience 4/5 meals being shit because they're rich and have connections so they can eat at excellent places every day. They buy excellent everything because they can. The advantages of wealth and power are fame are such that you can beat the odds because its not purely random. That 1 in 5 restaurants will produce excellent food almost 100% of the time. That's no different to a tattoo artist who makes very few mistakes and has excellent technique and composition.
      Acting like tattoos are not a product of talent and skill is ridiculous. In the end its no different to any other kind of art and there are countless artists who you can look at the body of their work and say everything they did was better than most people's work. Celebrities for some reason decide not to get excellent artists to do their work though and that's reflected in the sub par quality of their tattoos relative to their power and ability to access better talent. This is like looking at the homes of wealthy people and saying that since most art is shit it shouldn't be surprising that most wealthy people own mostly shit art but this isn't true. Most wealthy people own valuable well executed art because they can. For some reason celebrities have not carried this into how they get tattoos and the artists here have offered plenty of good theories for why.

But yes exactly like you said, most tattoo artists grow up wanting tattoos at a young age, and will go to a kitchen artist if they have to so of course they will have shitty ones. They were asked a question and they simply answered it, I don't think I heard them say theirs was any better. One said if they were famous they wouldn't want to have shitty tattoos while being in the public eye, but they didn't say they didn't have any.

      Because they let the apprentice of the shop tattoo them in hopes to teach the apprentice... Tattooers also tattoo themselves before they tattoo anyone else, while they are learning how to execute the application perfectly, causing the least amount of trauma on the skin as possible. Tattoo artists tend not to care as much about the quality if work they receive because they know that they can cover them up easily or trade with a laser technician working on tattoo removal, usually swapping art for removal. Tattooing another artist is a bonding experience between the two people opposed to someone on the street, who may feel that tattoos need meaning and want it to be perfect. Tattooists are concerned with you getting a good tattoo because they want you to be happy and adore the art they have put on your body... bad tattoos are not subjective... bad tattoos are tattoos that display obvious trauma such as scaring, heavy blow outs, ink falling out all together... I could go on. At least that is what my partner ( whom is a tattoo artist) and many of our friends ( tattooers and shop owners) have told me, and what I have observed while working and spending five days a week in a tattoo studio.

      The same reason a lot of hair stylists have fucked up hair sometimes. The people in the shop try new techniques on each other, they let people who are learning tattoo them and they tattoo themselves while they are learning. They do this to each other and to themselves, not to paying customers. But these celebrities all have tattoos that look like they were done by apprentices or completely untrained and inexperienced tattooers.

    A lot of people in the comments can’t see what makes a lot of these bad tattoos. And that’s why people get bad tattoos. Not everyone has an artistic eye. Sometimes things just have objectively bad composition or are executed without much technical skill. If you can’t see those things, then you are far more likely to get a bad tattoo.

    • @Pezzbrah
      @Pezzbrah Před 5 lety +17

      Seaweed Witch I disagree with the first thing you said. Art is never objectively bad if it has context that creates a style. Face tattoos for example aren’t a matter of showing off the ‘worlds best tattoo artists’ that all these idiots rage on about, its about the image they create in the context they give. If you look at post Malone or lil peep, lil Xan etc. the tattoos on their face aren’t mean to be some crazy massive piece, they for the most part are for people wanting the image of being careless, reckless, risky etc, and it doesn’t really matter how bad (to an extent) those tattoos are because they serve their purpose of showing somebodies character,
      I mean these tattoo geniuses spelled it out themselves, they have all the money in the world and yet they still don’t care, that’s what makes it interesting, that’s the style. Surprising to see all these so called ‘artists’ with their generic tattoos be so oblivious to this.

      At art school just because your message and context is good it means jack shit if it isnt done well. Just because you sprinkle some meaning on top doesnt make it good art.

    • @CheerUp2
      @CheerUp2 Před 5 lety +11

      Ok well I literally go to one of the top art school in the country so dont "Besides your wrong" me. Literally so many people get torn apart because of there bad art and dont care about the meaning so much. And tattoo is art, tattoos are basically illustration, im an illustration major. No matter what kind of artist where you are and what medium you use, if your in school or out of school, you will always critique other work and you CAN tell what is bad art. Like there is being subjective and then there is ACTUAL FUCKING TECHNIQUE. You can only go so far with "meaning" If that arm or foot looks fucked up, its fucked up and its a fact, its not up to a persons opinion that it looks bad or good.

    • @CheerUp2
      @CheerUp2 Před 5 lety +10

      Cool thanks for saying my passion in life is meaning less :^) guess i should just drop out of school to work at a meaning less job that will make me want to actually kill myself. And literally every thing you have in your life has been made with the help of a artist. The clothes you wear, the music you listen to, the movies you watch, the books you read, the cars you drive, the buildings you live in, etc all made by useless people with useless degrees.OH AND GREAT YOUR 15 EVEN BETTER. Also literally most artist hate photo realism, its cheap and unoriginal, thats why most artist in school are not fine artist. You seems to think everyone in art school only draws in realism. And most good tattoos are very graphic and bold lines and those are the ones that will last the best.
      another thing the most pretentious people at art school are graphic designers, literally the rest of us just joke around and draw memes, people seems to think art school is pretentious but in all truth its the normal school that are. Literally every other school shits on us just for making art and think they are better than us which is pretty fucking pretentious if you ask me

    • @CheerUp2
      @CheerUp2 Před 5 lety +4

      Literally aint true, im already working with NPR (national public radio) and doing illustrations for them and have been traveling with them all paid for, and im not even out of school yet. Heck I just did some stuff for them this week while doing homework and am getting paid next week! Most illustrators either end up tattoo artist, editorial work, do animation for people, and actually alot just work for themselves and sell there work. My personal friend has even been making band/tour posters for death cab for cutie, childish gambino, etc. There are so many ways for artist to succeed and make a living, if anything there have been more jobs for artist recently. Most artist want a simple life, dont want a big house, lots of cars, we just want to be in a small place, be happy and make art. And my school literally has Architecture and design, MICA just built a building for Architecture and we have a amazing design program. Regardless those people art creators and are artist.
      Also for me personally Im truly a better artist because of school. You learn to think in new ways, your skills become tighter, you learn so much history, and take classes in how to get work with you art and talk about taxes and all that shit. I was great at art before but now im extremely confident. College was originally a place to learn and I think people forget that, and ive learned so much and I will always be grateful and thankful to all my teachers and inspiring people ive met.

What if their tattoos are how they wanted it? What if Post Malone's lettering didn't need to be glorious and perfectly executed for him to love it the same? There's a weird obsession and standard with getting perfectly executed tattoos, but my favorites have been some that look how they look, and maybe that's what the canvas wanted.

    What I find funny is how short sighted every one of these professional tattooer's answers are. If you watch clips of there own tattoo experiences most of them say that their initial choices in tattoos were not good and they are either laser'ed or covered up or altered somehow along with some 'regert'. But being in the industry and now being in the know, of course they know who to go to. Still they are all dismayed that someone who is not as into tattoo's as they are doesn't go to the right people or know to really vet an artist. They are amazed that a celebrity doesn't display a notable amount of forethought.

I found out that the reason why celebs do is because a lot of reputable artists have waitlists and/or will tell you if your tat idea is a shitty idea/something they're not good at/etc. A lot of those elites aren't the most patient people since they're so used to getting what they want, special treatment, and instant gratification… So instead of getting on the waitlist or spending time reconsidering a bad tat idea, they go to the first person who'll take them immediately and doesn't give a shit if the tat is shitty

    Comments: most people don’t study art or understand the history behind classical art and methods that have been integrated into what are now considered “good tattoos.” Or how many years it has taken for art to progress or how many years a person has studied to understand artistic elements.
    From the video: yeah, they are harsh because they are looking at the overall elements of the work to determine the value of the work.

    4:43 she makes a really good point, with them being celebrities almost any tattoo artist would be thrilled to put their art on a celebrity's body for the world to see and would make time to fit them in, but considering what the other guy was saying about a lot of celebrities "living in the moment" or feeling entitled they just want it done and want it done now and may not want to wait for an artist that may be able to give them a beautiful tattoo
    And considering I've seen comments saying the art is subjective, that is true and I respect your opinion, for me the tattoos didnt nesscesarily look bad, they just looked kinda off, like maybe if something was done a little differently maybe they'd be even better -thats my two cents on the matter-
