    I've always like that method where you sew 2 (and 3 is better) rows - and then gather them up. Those gathers look really lovely.
    Have you ever tried loosening your top tension to do them, rather than using normal tension? That's what I was taught as a kid, and we always pulled up the bobbin threads to gather. We'd tend to use a rather long stitch too but shorter stitches would work if we needed them for really fine fabrics and/or something at a smaller scale (e.g. baby's clothes). If the gathers are too big on those they can look more like pleats...
    Loosening the top tension made it really easy to gather because the upper thread is pulled to the underside a little and the bobbin stitch is more like a "straight line" under the fabric. The stitches are not "locking" as tightly as they do with normal tension top and bottom. If we were worried the threads might break on really long gathers then we'd load the bobbin up with an extra-strong or heavy duty thread.
    (Every sewing kit should have some - black, white and a couple of "blending" greys!) In desperation we were even known to load up the bobbin with dental floss! :-)

      @TamarasJoyDIY  Před 3 lety +6

      Hi Megan, Funny that I adjust tension for the first method but never considered it for the second method. Your suggestions are genius and I will be giving them a try! I love the idea of using a thicker bobbin thread as well. oooohhhhh! This will be fun! Thank you so much for sharing, a seamstress is never done learning. :)

    Second method: 4:50
    Loosen top tension as per commenter Megan Mills’ suggestion. Do not back stitch (do not go back and then forward in beginning).
    Use fabric 3x length of edge/border length. Fold along width. Add 3 rows of stitches along open side to join them. Stitches should be roughly 1/4” apart, making sure the long end threads do not cross. Pull the fabric along the threads to ruffle the fabric. Attach to project (between quilt layers) and seam rip if any stitching lines are showing.

    I don’t know what I’m doing or not doing but when I do the highest tension/longest stitch length (straight stitch) settings my machine keeps eating the thread. I’ve tried everything I can think of & same problem. I’m throwing my machine off a cliff.

    • @TamarasJoyDIY
      @TamarasJoyDIY  Před 11 měsíci

      If that isn’t working then just try the method where you do a long basting stitch at normal tension and then pull the thread to create the ruffle. If you are having more issues with your sewing machine then perhaps this video may help you: czcams.com/video/DWPGsK-C93w/video.html I walk you through all the things that may be going wrong. Some solutions are as simple as trying a new bobbin. Don’t give up just yet!

      If neither of these options work you can do a zig zag stitch across some yarn. Make sure not to sew into the yarn at all. And then you can pull the yarn to create a ruffle. Pin, baste, and remove the yarn entirely. You can see this method done here: czcams.com/video/AvQEh0p3sXs/video.html
