I have been asking and this holiday season, my parents finally gifted me all the sets related to The Great Books, 1990 edition, including The Gateway and The Great Ideas 10 volume sets. To me, a life of learning and leisure solitaire reading is a blessing and luxury.
As a syntopical indexer for the 1990's edition of GBWW (I indexed Democracy in America), I agree that it is a most unused book. But the research is there for anyone who wants it . The essays bring you up to speed quickly on the history of the idea and the outlines are valuable if you want to explore a topic. I just ordered the book and look forward to reading it.
The Syntopicon was a serious achievement. As far as I know, there is nothing else like it. The purpose is to allow a person to read through the Great books syntopically. Syntopical reading us simply reading multiple different books on the same idea or subject. This type of reading is the most advanced method of rapidly acquiring understanding on any given subject. Many people do this without realizing it when they want to learn about something.
It's an incredible two-volume set. At the end of each topic, you get references to the Great Books, and also "Additional Readings," books not part of the GBWW, but that are germane ot the topic.
I certainly can agree that the elective system was/is a terrible concept. I was poorly served by counselors and advisors. I was not discouraged from taking electives even as a college freshman. I have used the GBWW to enhance my education ever since my university graduation.

I've read all 60 volumes of the Great Books. It took me 5 years.
