  • Podcast with Emily Mu, my friend and colleague at MIT
    Emily graduated from MIT with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Math. During high school, she won several math competitions, which later helped her get an internship at D. E. Shaw & Co. as a quantitative analyst. Before starting her PhD at MIT, Emily worked in the Google Ads group. Her PhD research focuses on applied machine learning.
    ▬ In this video ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
    We talk about how to develop good mathematical intuition, which can be very helpful if applying to top internships at hedge funds and investment banks. Next we talk about Google ads, trading vs. quantitative analysis, Wolf of Wall Street, and Wall Street.

      Hey Harvey, studying physics is surely a good path towards finance. Especially because, if you become really good, you can enter the financial market more in “Silicon-Valley” style, and not like a typical banker. No 12-hour shifts, and no spending your first 3 years formatting excel sheets and ppt presentations 😂

      It usually takes me around 20-40 hours to complete such a script (with all the research), so it will probably be published sometime in the next 6 weeks 🙂

      Thank you :) Yes, you can definitely get that. A friend of mine who was interning there at the same time as me, did that. His internship was between the 2nd and 3rd (last) year of his bachelor's degree, and he got a full time offer. He completed his last year of his bachelor's degree and then started working for D. E. Shaw full time

    Hi Samuel, first of all I want to tell you that I really enjoy your videos. Like many I watched your interview with Niklas and I was delighted to see you even have your own channel. I have a question concerning the Physics olympiad. I will try to keep it short but I think it makes sense to share a bit of my background. I started participating at the Math Olympics in 3rd grade and I did quite well. When I began High School I won a price at the Landesebene, there was no federal round for my age so I didn't qualify. Unfortunately afterwards I hung out with the wrong people and one thing led to another and I didn't really care about the competitions or anything similar anymore. I still participated in the local rounds of the Math Olympics but didn't win anything because I didn't practice. But recently, mainly due to your videos, I got very motivated to really try to go all in on one of the competitions. While I am quite certain, I am too far behind in the domain of Maths, I believe I could still have a shot at the physics olympiad. The problem is that I will be 17 in 2 weeks and start my last year of High School next year, so this fall will be my last shot at participating. I am willing to devote a lot of time and energy to preparing for the competition in the upcoming months but obviously I have to do very much to have a shot at doing well. Since you did really well at the International Physics Olympics (which would be my ultimate dream goal, but I suppose that is a bit unrealistic) I was wondering if you could tell me how I should go about practicing for the competition. Right now I am working through a prepatraion module created by the Scienceolympiaden website but I am not sure what would be the most efficient practice after finishing it, besides doing loads of exams of course. I hope the length of my comment hasn't caused you to not read it at all :) Best of luck on your further CZcams journey!

      Thank you for your comment. I indeed read it to the end - just had to switch to my computer to wrote the answer 🙂
      Yeah, the people you hang out with do have a lot of impact on your life - I experienced the same as you.
      When it comes to preparation for the IPhO, my two key pieces of advice would be:
      1) I would first try to learn as much theory about physics as possible. My personal favorite for this are Prof. Walter Lewins lectures from MIT. 8.01 is classical mechanics. 8.02 electricity and magnetism. And 8.03 vibrations and waves. These are the core courses which are thought at every university in the world in physics, and listening to these courses very carefully is super important. If time doesn't permit, skip the last one. But 8.01 and 8.02 are pure gold. Probably the best lectures in physics ever
      2) Next once you know enough physics, it's time to start solving problems. Many of them. I spent probably 2 years solving problems every single day. I would first go though all the problems (and solutions after you tried for a long time) that are provided by the german preparation program. Once you've mastered these, you can move on to the actual problems for the physics olympiad. You can find most of them on this website: physprob.com/
      They don't go very far back, so you can also look at my private library of problems: 1drv.ms/u/s!Aq4j02E2blsAgs1esNLAI7xuXjymEQ?e=bCozmV
      Back in the 1960s the problems used to be easier, so maybe look into that first.
      Once you run out of problems (which might take a long time), you can also look at the Asian Physics Olympiad.
      And that's it! I wish you best of luck! 🤞 🙂

      Also, I suggest downloading the problems from my link asap, as the link might stop working once a lot of people click on it

    • @SamuelBoschMIT
      @SamuelBoschMIT  Před 2 lety +3

      And here is the link to the 1st lecture by Walter Lewin. This should keep you busy for quite some time, until you learn all the physics needed :)

      Hey Anton, thanks for the advice! Good point - I've also been thinking about this. That's also why we added the "podcast" stamp in the thumbnail. Do you think it's not obvious enough?
      I kinda have to use the title to fill it with searchable "buzzwords", to get people to click on it (that's just how youtube works). But I could squeeze a name or the word podcast in the end of the title maybe

    • @Anton-gd2kw
      @Anton-gd2kw Před 2 lety +1

      @@SamuelBoschMIT my bad, didn't look at the thumbnail before watching, then it should be obvious when you get the video suggested. Speaking for myself I often search for the word podcast and then the topic I want to learn about, I don't know if CZcams only considers the title or also the description or words in the thumbnail and how it's weighted but I think you could get more traffic through searches.
      I also don't know about the maximum length of titles on CZcams.
      Regarding the name of your guest I think it's more personal if the title starts with a name which people tend to be attracted to (followed by a colon and then the topics). Furthermore it will give more structure for people searching through your podcast when the collection has grown.
      However, I've never run a CZcams so who am I to know;)
