  • A chat about how I paint Dark Age miniatures. Some thoughts about colours & information on my process. I may do some other videos on this topic later.
Here's a link to an interesting website which shows Medieval colours & how they were achieved: medieval-colou...

No worries :-) Very thorough list you've done there. There are lot's of other Vallejo VMC & Reaper colours that I use for cloth too, but this gives you an idea.

Good stuff Jack, similar to my stuff, but I generally go a bit brighter...may need to incorporate some of what you do into my stuff. Thanks for your insight.

Very informative and interesting video Jack. Come on with more videos. Nice if you make a video that shows all the steps from beginning to end. I myself only use washes over the paint at the end. I only use washes over wood, leather, metal and skin. I don't use washes over clothes and fabrics. These I only paint with many thin layers of paint to bring out light and shade. But maybe I should try using washes. Do you feel the end result is better with the use of washes or is it to save time?
Continue with your videos. Very useful for nerdy amateurs like me who don't socialize with other painters

Many Thanks for this I'm a big fan of your technique - one of the problems i've encountered is trying to paint light coloured cloth like white, cream, unbleached linen etc I never seem to get the definition between highlight/base/shade right - its either too stark or too subtle - I'd love to hear your thoughts on how you achieve the results you get

Thanks Neil. Yes light colours can be a challenge, it can take some experimenting to get the balance between high contrast & subtle shading. I avoid using white & try to use a lot of "off-whites" & creams - I can't remember the last time I used a pure white.

Thanks for this. I'm working on Vikings just now so this is very handy, any tips on painting hair?

Cheers Paul. Perhaps I can cover how I paint hair in a future video? I tend to use paint triads for hair.

@@JackSargePainting That would be great, I'm looking to improve that aspect of my painting. I've subscribed so I won't miss it.
