    • @Colp2
      @Colp2 Před 2 lety +8

      @@jakewilliams2497 There has never been a King Hugo of Sweden. The character is entirely fictional, and mostly a hodgepodge of various attributes of Frederick I, Adolf Frederick, and Gustav III.
      Saint Petersburg was lost to Peter the Great during the Great Northern War (along with large tracts of land; the Baltic provinces, southern Swedish Pomerania) while Sweden was ruled by Charles XII. The absolute monarchy and Swedish Empire ended with the death of Charles XII in 1718.
      Ulrika Eleonora (sister of Charles XII) was Queen of Sweden for a couple of years, after which her husband Frederick I became King of Sweden. The Riksdag had recognized her over her nephew Charles Frederick (who married the daughter of Peter the Great and was the father of Peter III) in exchange for the throne renouncing most power to the Riksdag (starting what is known as the Age of Liberty).
      Frederick I didn't really do much in the 10 years he was king, as the Riksdag (made up of the noble Hat Party and the non-noble Cap Party) had most of the power. The Hat Party lost even more Swedish territory in a failed war with Russia, and subsequently lost a lot of influnce and power in Sweden.
      The Cap Party took over while Adolf Frederick became King (just as powerless as Frederick I), and instated a unique-at-the-time Freedom of Press Act (ending almost all types of censorship), economic liberalism, etc. Adolf Frederick himself is most famous for having died of indigestion after eating a large meal followed by 14 hetvägg/semla (a sort of pastries served in hot milk).
      Gustav III was the oldest son of Adolf Frederick, and became King of Sweden at age 25. One year later, he led a bloodless coup against the Riksdag, ending the Age of Liberty by retaking power to the throne and becoming a self-styled enlightened despot and absolute ruler. While his attempts at conquering Norway and re-taking land from Russia ended without major changes to the status quo, he enacted massive changes in Swedish society; removed the Freedom of the Press Act, yet enacted major reforms for economic liberalism, social reform, social mobility, religious freedom, acts aimed at reducing wastefulness, and the near-total ban on torture and capital punishment. He also invested large sums in promoting culture and philosophy.

    I never understood why they changed the names of the Swedish monarchs... I know that the show isn't meant to be historically accurate but what does it add to the story that they gave imaginary names to the king and queen of Sweden? when this is supposed to be set the king of Sweden was Adolf Frederick, I think and his wife was Louisa.
