বিশ্বে তাইওয়ানের অর্থনীতির ব্যাপক গুরুত্ব রয়েছে। মুঠোফোন থেকে শুরু করে ল্যাপটপ, ঘড়ি ও গেম কনসোলের মতো ইলেকট্রনিক ডিভাইসগুলোতে কম্পিউটার চিপ ব্যবহার করা হয়। এই চিপের বড় একটি অংশ তৈরি হয় তাইওয়ানে। তাইওয়ান সেমিকন্ডাকটর ম্যানুফ্যাকচারিং কোম্পানি বা টিএসএমসি বিশ্বে কম্পিউটার চিপের বাজারের অর্ধেকের বেশি দখল করে রেখেছে। তাই তাইওয়ানের দখল যদি চীনের হাতে যায়, তাহলে বিশ্বের অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এই শিল্পের নিয়ন্ত্রণ পেয়ে যাবে বেইজিং।
