    Chaos has existed in some form for 60,000,000 years. So why is they only start doing stuff in the last 10,000?

    I recently watched Event Horizon and it seems to fit exactly into the 40k lore. In that film humans open a portal to another dimension for ftl travel and get their shit fucked up by being from a hell dimension. In my headcanon this is probably how things went down in 40k as well. Humans discovering the warp and getting fucked up by the primordial warp beings (not neceseraly chaos beings) until some precursor form of the gellar fields was invented.

      In my opinion, they shouldn't.
      For a setting to resonate it needs a mythology of it's own, in-setting tales and lore that can not be verified by the characters living within that universe. As soon as a writer starts to involve some of that mythology into a modern story, explaining some of it, there is a risk that mythology loses the attraction that it had in the first place. Instead of being this barely known but likely deep facets of the lore simply becomes: "Oh that place they went to in that one book? I guess that was alright..."
      But this is Game Workshop and they are already looking at what concepts they can 're-model.'

      @@lostbutfreesoul Well for one, the only living entity the chaos gods ever feared was the emperor himself.
      One of the more powerful non-chaos god demons came from humanity after the first murder.
      They're the only ones reliably fueling the gods themselves, Slaneesh has the eldar but they have safeguards around her and are less numerous.
      The chaos gods wanted the Primarchs because of how powerful they were. They made a lot of technological advancements in less time it took the Eldar and Necrontyr.
      If it wasn't for humanity than chaos would literally not be as powerful as it is but also wouldn't be held back as much as they are thanks to the imperium trying there damn best to hold back the demonic hoard for 10k years

      The birth of Slaneesh caused a lot of the Eldar gods to die, fracture, or be imprisoned which help let the Chaos gods have free reign for the first time in millions of years.
      Its no doubt that humanity is a major source of power for the chaos gods now that they are trillions of them giving them power in the warp through their emotions, but they were always around before.
      Also Big E has been worshipped by the Collective whole of humanity for 10,000 years and they sacrificed around 12 million psykers to him during that time which gave him a powerful presence in the warp.
      They made it clear that he can take one of the chaos gods on alone, but he isn't strong enough to 1v4 solo them, which is why he still bides his time on the chair.
      Also take into account that Big E never intended for this route to happen, he wanted humanity to reach their old peaks, but the betrayal of his favorite son was never apart of the plan and he has no choice but option B. @custink22 Před 2 lety +2

      @@lostbutfreesoul my thought on the chaos gods being formed because of humanity is that there used to be chaos gods for every race, but as humanity grew, their gods became more and more powerful until they took over the realms and threw down the other gods and took over the aspects that those gods were worshipped for. As well, during humanity's rise into a galactic super power and the much later Great Crusade aimed at regaining that power, many species were made extinct which both further fueled three of warp farts we all know and love while significantly weakening more of the other gods. It further supercharged our gods, including the Emperor (as much as he claimed he hated that) and that due to humanity being top dog for the last 10k ish years and being a close number 2 to the Eldar before that, our chaos gods have maintained their position much the same as humanity has. This is why the Cabal told Alpharius that in order to defeat chaos, humanity had to die. Three of the gods were humanity's, and fueled by humanity, and therefore needed humanity to be around to be able to plague other species. Slaanesh would have disappeared as the Eldar died out as her glut of soul energy from her birth ran out, or at least become a weakened and easily dealt with minor god much like the ones taken over by the other three. But, humanity feeds and sustains them, the constant war, planning, feeling of hopelessness, and the sheer excess used by humans to keep sane in such bad times continues to feed and strengthen those gods, in the same way that the worship and acting in the name of the Emperor keeps him as the strongest individual chaos god in the entire setting.

      Distance.
      Not to get too nerdy but the current best guesstimate is that the universe is expanding and galaxy's are accelerating and moving away from each other (in general) possibly at rates faster than light.
      The average distance between galaxy's (today) is over a million light years. To put that in context, the milky way is about 50,000 light years wide. now add about 25 thousand years of (possibly) faster than light acceleration and going to other galaxies just may no longer be possible with the excepting of the Tyranids and the Silent King.
      Early on in the war of the heavens who knows. Millions of years ago, if they applied themselves and maintained/grew/lenghthened? the web way maybe they could have done it. Ultimately though, the Eldar were not designed to adapt and improve.

    • @jagdson2701
      @jagdson2701 Před 2 lety +7

      Cosmic inflation as a hypothesis is more refined now than it was when WH40k was kludged up. The rate of expansion is nowhere close to c in the local galactic structures. Andromeda is approaching the Milky Way and will begin merging in around 2m years. The Milky Way is approximately 100k lightyears in diameter.
      Warhammer tries a little too hard to grit its teeth and scream during the manliest of dumps, and still winds up being just a minor local feud.

      Some Eldars actually considered that idea before on a novel, and the answer was that no matter where they go, the moment their souls go into the Warp, they will get devoured by Slaanesh. Not just that, but they use the Webway as their main method of interstellar travel, and they have lost the tech to actually expand it, meaning there are a limited amount of webway portals.

  • @Pyre
    @Pyre Před 2 lety +5

    I've said this a bunch of other places, including on Majorkill's videos, but this video in particular shows how relevant a slight misquote of Christopher Pike still is here: The Chaos Gods aren't even really 'gods' by any standard other than power. They're just accidents the Warp happened to vomit forth when all the true powers were looking the other way.
    In the right circumstances, they could be unmade just as surely as mortals made them in the first place.
    This is the first time, though, I'm realizing how very cool an angle that is in the context of 40k. Chaos being just another faction that isn't actually all-powerful and inevitable honestly makes them much more interesting *as* a faction. They're simultaneously potentially the most powerful, by an overwhelming margin, or possible to render *harmless*, arguably more than any other faction.

So, if the big 4 were formed by both humanity and the Eldar, and those species have never become extra galactic, then perhaps our beloved warp farts are tied to our galaxy. And perhaps the Shadow in the Warp that the Tyranids are famous for is their own chaos god making its way into our galaxy and it is so different from the ones we know and misunderstood because the Nids are so very different.
