- In today’s video, I’m sharing how I have set up my functional Hobonichi cousin planner for 2023! I’m sharing my ideas for annual, monthly, and weekly planning, as well as how I am utilizing the notes pages in this planner to get the most out of them.
If you’d like to get very hydrated by the end of this video, take a sip of water every time I say the word “functional”. 😂

I put washi on the edge of each month and I love how it looks and is functional
I used my 100 to record where I went for fun outings and date nights throughout the year :)
this high is "I have nothing interesting to contribute but also I want you guys to look at my thing next" energy
Thank you for practical tips and ideas on how to use these pages without so many stickers, etc.
The 365 days is where I track my no spend days but you could also use the preceding page and put more of your monthly calendar stickers in the boxes and highlight your no spend days.
I found this video so helpful! I’m having another go at using the Cousin this year after failing miserably last year, as I was struggling with finding a use for it.
This is one of the most helpful videos on using a Cousin I have seen, as it is much more functional and not completely dependant on being super-creative, which sometimes I am not.
Thank you so much for this and I hope you show us more of how you end up using it next year.
Have a great New Year! 🎉

For the graph i’m tracking weight - weighing myself twice a month for the year. For the word of day - i’m thinking a monthly pic of my bf and myself. I like the idea of the bill tracker…
A monthly photo would be so fun! Good idea.
I enjoyed your video. I’m gonna watch the weekly. I’m trying to decide how to use both. Thx😎
Happy New Year Ashton, thank you for this, I'm just starting my first cousin ever and this was very helpful
So glad you shared all of your ideas for each page! I got some very good ideas from you. Also, just placed an order for your moon phase stickers bc that size is perfect!
Thanks so much, Amy! Hope you enjoy the moon phase stickers 😊
This is my first year with the Cousin. It's my everything planner, as opposed to my (work) Weeks. I've been using the time block on the dailies if I have things to do at specific times; otherwise, it's been for to-do listing or future planning while I'm journaling. I love the idea of using the Favorites page for book tracking. I have a little set up on the first of the month page, but I might transfer them to the Favorites page for an overview of how much I'm actually reading.
Awesome video, super helpful, definitely follow long now. Can’t wait to check out your sticker shop, love all your ideas! ❤
Thanks so much 😊
For the last page, with all the days of the year, you could give a daily rating. So, for example: -2, -1, 0, 1, 2... for the quality of the day (so just very general) and those numbers can be color coded. I thought of this idea from listening to a podcast where a guy had rated his days for years and he was able to see what made a high quality day and figure out how to increase the quality of his days. He was, of course, tracking other things on the day, but it was nice to have a general reference for the quality of the day.
Fantastic video, Ashton! You have some amazing ideas. I'm setting up my 2023 cousin tomorrow and I can't wait :)
For my 100 page, I haven't fully decided yet, but I think I might use it to mark 100 small achievements that help me reach my overall yearly goals!
Yay! So exciting. I love that idea for the my 100 page!
Love your setup... definitely taking some ideas. I'm using the 365 days tracker as a mood tracker and looking forward to see what it looks like at the end of the year.
That will be fun to look back on!
Do you mind giving the link to the cover?
Sure, I just added links to the description!
It's beautiful 😍 Thank you for sharing 💖 I bought the Midori clear cover and it does not fit mine 🙈 I have no idea why... it's the same hobonichi cousin. It's my first time using it so I don't know if I am supposed to do something to make it fit as it won't even close 😶🌫️
thank you! 😊 i thought my clear cover seemed too small at first, but after leaving it on for a few days it fit perfectly.
The same clear cover with the word codex in it is the one you want :) The other is more for notebooks like Statlogy which are fairly similar to Hobonichi
@mariahsmall5696 Thank you SO SO much! I was thinking it had to be something that I am doing wrong🙈 You are a STAR! ✨️
Hey Ashton, what's your opinion on rings vs bound book as a yearly planner? I noticed you were in both in 2022 :) Thanks!!!
I use both systems for different areas of life. For my personal planning, I prefer having the entire year in one bound book. But when it comes to work and reference info, I like the ability to move and rearrange pages as I go, so disc bound works best for that. When I try rings for day to day planning, it never functions well for the long term because I don't have the ability to keep the entire year of inserts in one planner. I hope that helps :)
@@ashtonwomack That makes so much sense! You've helped me a lot with organising and separating personal and work things! Thank you for that, and for the detailed response! Looking forward to an update on your Hobo cousin :)
What pens do you recommend for the hobonichi cousin that don’t bleed and have no/minimal ghosting?
I almost always use the Uni jetstream (pen that comes with Hobonichi Cousin) with 0.7mm refills. For hand lettering/drawing, my favorite is the Tombow calligraphy pen.
@@ashtonwomack Thank you for the advice!
I like the Faber Castell Pitt artist pens
The Tombow brush pens in soft and hard are a joy to use as are the Unit Jetstream Multi pen and best, the Sarasa MarkON. Anything Sarasa makes is fabulous.
Please can you tell me the difference between cousin and week?! 🌹🌹❤️
Cousin is A5 size with month, week, & daily pages for the entire year. The Weeks is a smaller portable planner with just monthly, weekly & notes pages. Both are great for different uses :)
