I was doing a general associate's at hcc because I didnt know what I wanted to study-- Although i felt an inclination towards stem I wasnt quite sure engineering was the route. But this past semester I switched my degree to an associates in engineering to transfer over to university of Houston. Anyway, thanks tons for being real about your college career. I know I wouldnt tell people my struggles in school. But you, you're awesome man, and congrats on everything. I wish all good health and well being to you and family and loved ones. What do you think about pursuing a ME masters? In your experience, does having a MS help you? And what about salary wise, my professors told me that Ms get 8k more on average than undergraduate
Hey D'bricksaw C, Great question! I didn't get a masters because 1) I didn't know what to continue my education with. 2) I was done with school. 3) From what people have told me, there's not too much of a benefit for getting your masters in engineering. Now, going for your doctorate is completely different. That will give you a significant increase and you can really excel in your engineering career. But for a masters in engineering, I don't really think it's necessary. If you want to get it, and you can pay for it...great! But it won't stop you from being a good engineer with a decent salary. One of my professors...who happened to help design the original 1990 Mazda Miata....told me that a masters degree today doesn't hold the same merit it once did back in the day. You can still get one, and sure you may get a pay increase(8-10k, like you said)....but you'll probably be doing the same work as BS engineer. Where you see a difference is with a doctorate. I think it's best to get your BS in engineering, get work experience and sharpen your skills while in the workforce. Being in the real world with dealing with real engineering problems make engineers better. But, if you want to better yourself with a master's, go for it. Nothing wrong with that. I hope this helped! You'll find that most engineers with a BS do just fine without further education.
