In this video I will be restoring and fixing an Alienware Network that I got a while ago for $50. It has a faulty keyboard and has an issue where as soon as the laptop is turned on it will beep very loudly and display a black screen. I have already fixed the touch pad and added some rubber feet to protect the screen.

mann!! Believe it or not, after watching your video, i try on my old laptop acer 5920g. remove the keyboard and voila, usualy it take few times to came out the screen on start boot, with keyboard remove it appear just normal like old time before, what even more exiting for me that my speaker turn on. before tat it just silent like broken. mann you are legend! thank🙏🏼
Ha! I still have one of those bad boys in red! Used it when I went to boarding school in 2014-2017.
For it's size this laptop did a great job, of course gaming was limited because of the overheating.
Design, keyboard and mousepad are excellent. Just got it out again from my closet and ordered a new battery.
The only problem I have with mine is the overheating. When using Google only the fan gets pretty loud already. But after years of heavy use it's understandable.
I will have to see if I can upgrade it somehow.
Had same problem getting hot. I'm thinking need new fans. ???
I mean, the resell value is probably high because of the name but to me, that laptop is only worth about $50-$150 which isn't much profit thinking about time and replacement parts. But always cool to see that things are fixable!
They regularly sell for over $200 on eBay depending on condition and specs, a high spec one in good to like new will sell closer to $300. The bottom end is around $150 and that would be for an R1 or a low spec R2 in fair condition.

Thank you, I had the same beeping, I thought it's the rams, or the ssd, everything was in order, I never thought it would be the keyboard
Did you try to replace the keyboard, and how is the outcome?
@@johnhe9984 I didn't replace it, I just moved some wires around and I never had problems since

Hi, my alienware 17 R4 gets 3-2-1 beeps, do you know what it means?
I have an R1 but i have encountered a problem where the bios screen and everything else is not fitted in the screen.. i think its called overscan

Nice fix of a well made laptop my cheaply made toshiba needs a new keyboard i will do it at some point .
My Alienware m11x r3 just had the same problem. But the keyboard is good. Maybe it has something to do with CMOS battery? People say the cmos battery needs to be replaced every three four years. Do you know where the cmos battery is located?

Hey James, I have an issue with the timebomb of r4 sdhc dual core 2018 one. The time changing one is irking because I can’t play other games like new super Mario bros 2 and other new games on my new 3ds xl. If you have any other fixes for this please let me know.

I heard that installing YSmenu on R4 cards solves it or download the latest kernel for your R4 card

Hmm I have an old alienware M17x laptop that does that beeping too but I looked up the 5 beeps and it said CMOS but I replaced the battery and it didn't correct anything. Do you think that would be the keyboard as well? I remember long ago, my laptop started running slowly, and I think the hard drive might have been going bad but I wasn't using it enough to really fix it then, and then recently I tried coming back to it and it does that beeping thing and I cant seem to get to a BIOS.
Try re-seating the memory in the laptop.
What generation m17x? I have an R4 that has the same issue every now and then even with a charged bios battery. I disconnect the bios battery and primary battery. Hold the power button for 10 seconds and plug it all back in. Grabbing fresh bios from dells site and flashing that and it hasn't done it since
@@isblue8504 I played around with it last night and got it working now, not entirely sure what was the issue, but its the same R4 from like 2012. I got it a new SSD hard drive and plugged in the windows 7 code for the registration and it lets you upgrade to 10 still.
I reseated the memory, replaced the hard drive, replaced the CMOS battery and then when booting it, followed a guide on how to get it to run using a combination of holding the fn button when powering on with only the AC power (no battery). I then pressed f12 to get into some 1 time boot thing that someone recommended to update the bios (although I didn't update it) and ran performance checks and all the parts seem to be working fine. Hopefully that was it, because the laptop didn't even get used that much besides for school and sat around a long time and I was getting pretty close to just selling it for parts if i couldnt get it working haha.

I also have a alienware m11x that was given to me as a hammy down but its not bad but too small and heavy. Also its on windows 7 which is outdated.

A lot of alienware will include the windows 7 cd key inside the battery enclosure or just inside the shell on a sticker, and you can just enter that in when windows 10 asks for for a key ,and it will still upgrade. I did it last night with my old alienware M17x r4 from 2012.
mine beeps for 4 times. what does that mean?
I tried to use windows 10 on mine and it was getting BSOD errors using the windows 7/8 drivers on windows 10.
My black screened yesterday after restarting it its a sad day

Tech James is a regular Womble when it comes to fixing up items other people would throw away. The vinyl decal on the track pad was a genius move and ADDS to the style of the original.
You can upgrade that laptop with a 500 Gb to 1TB solid state drive, lad.

So I'm planning on buying this laptop (the r2 model with the i5 U520 in it) for $185, it also has 8 gigs of ram and also a 240gb ssd, can you guys tell me if it's actually worth it?
Worth it if you're not trying to do crazy stuff. The ram and drive alone are about 120. I would still disassemble and clean it. Maybe even new thermal paste
Go for an R3. From what I understand the R3 was the only model with USB 3.0 on the right side ports.
5 beeps is bios battery flat. Atleast it is on my m17x R4, m18x R1 and 15 R2

Just cause it has an i7 does not mean its good, it has a 2nd gen low power cpu which means its dual core and severly underpowered

5 beeps easily means a faulty/dead cmos battery a quick google search is all you need.

The beeping is an error code
Not the Keyboard it's the battery on my end and I have alienware 14xm

I think it was his, it said James on login. I think it was restoring for $50 (probably the cost of the keyboard+shipping).

@@taner980 Ah i see now, he got it 2-3 years ago for 50 pounds but pounds are like 1.3x dollars so probably around 80 bucks. I didn't pay attention in beginning of video much, but later in video he referred to it as his laptop and said his name, so thats why I thought that.
