This time on the Ident Review, we go back to one of the most nostalgic channels that I've had the pleasure of viewing! Launching as Toons 'N' Tunes in 2003, the eventually renamed POP would become a treasure trove for animated content! As the years have gone by, its visual identity has changed too, so join me as we look at how its look has evolved over the last 20 years!
The Ident Review began in May 2018 and since has spawned over 100 episodes and even a spin-off show, the Ident Review Extra! It remains a firm AMTV favourite to this day!

I remember when Rory and Purdey were on CITV Saturday mornings. The dragon was called Tricky then though, they ran a contest early on to name the Cat and I think it was Purdey that won and it was kept when they moved over POP.

OMG, POP!!! Man, this channel is so nostalgic for me, I remember watching so many series on that channel such as the 90s Mario cartoons, the 90s Sonic cartoons, Digimon Data Squad, Invisible Network of Kids, Kirby Right Back At Ya and many more
I don’t watch pop (I live in the U.S.) but I do watch some cbbc shows (they air on the Pluto TV service under bbc kids)

I grew up with the 2010-2015 idents and watching this makes me feel so nostalgic! The 2013 idents specifically used to only really show at night before the channel switched off so to me when I was younger they gave off an eerie vibe but I do like them much more now 😭
I miss pop so much it’s just not the same anymore they don’t have any of the good shows :(

I grew up with the last months of the ‘balloon’ era and into the ‘letters’ era, Pop to me was an odd but fascinating channel showcasing a selection of international imports that you wouldn’t get on any other channel or the UK at all. And don’t even get me started on Kix and Tiny Pop. PopGirl was just.. there i guess.

here in England, we do have kix, but it's just pop max. Airs total dramarama and alvin & the chipmunks 24/7.
I will always remember watching Redwall on pop on Sky around 2004/2005/2006 there were nicer times!
In my opinion, nothing will ever match the 08-10 and 10-15 ones. Those were iconic 😭😭🤭😭

I watched it regularly since 2020, at least one month before Pop's 2020 refresh. Pop has a strong identity, and I think Superestudio did a great job on it.

Oh my this is a huge trip back to when I was 10! Watching the Super Mario World Show and The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, and later after I got into Transformers, they used to air the original G1 series. So so good! Thank you for covering this!
I got into transformers last year, they reaired the FIRST season only of g1 in march-May of 2022
Interesting to stumble on this, we (Versus Studio) made the 2013 idents, glad you liked them! The moongoon ident idea came from POP but the other five were our concepts. The fairly clean/simple aesthetic was really just driven by budget and timelines, as we only had 8 weeks to make all six (IIRC). It was a fun project, sweets and whale were our favourites.

I used to watch the channel sometimes, I liked the retro cartoons they played especially the 90s video game cartoons, like a slightly more modern Boomerang, great video
You know, I remember the Pop channel from the DiC Entertainment The Adventures Of Super Mario Bros. 3 and The New Super Mario World and Hanna-Barbera’s The Smurfs. Classic man!

I have never seen any of these idents before, nor did I know that Pop was a channel! I love the vibrancy of these idents though. So fun!
For being a 2010’s kid, I grew up with the 2015 idents. And man the nostalgia!
Wasn't expecting Pop to get a video. Would be cool if it's 90s equivalent The Children's Channel got a Ident Review Video too.
The 2nd era (or what I like to call Letters) actually launched with different ident soundtrack in October 2006, but was changed a bit later on in 2007 circa, because it sounded too similar to "Benny Hill" 🤣

Pop is no longer owned by Sony, so I won't be surprised if their next idents are another downgrade. The company that took them over is Narrative Entertainment. Of course when they took them over, Sony Channel had to be renamed to GREAT TV... and their idents are definitely NOT great.
Was it owned by the Sony that made Playstation and Sony Pictures Television
It's now owned by the company who owns GREAT! which is separate from Sony GmbH

The sweet invaders ident would have worked better if the ufos resembled the flying saucers sweet. Since the tank shoots Bon bons , would have made the whole thing sweets
Ahh, an ident Ive kinda seen a bit of here. Though i remember it more through old CZcams versions of the super Mario world cartoon, Before they were brought into more official capacity. With stuff like wild brain and whatnot.

@@powerspyin1games Most of the studio backround (from Tricky) was reused in 2003, when Toons and Tunes rebranded to Pop. It was then refreshed in late 2006 to concide with it's rebrand.

Great video i uesd to watch pop sometimes when i was a kid my favourite pop tv show was super duper sumos maybe in one of your next ident review videos you could do the tiny pop idents.
I remember watching Pop when we got sky digital installed back in 2003, used too like watching Noah’s Island on it, Loved Rory and The Cat also, think there were also animated Monkey characters called Cheeky Monkeys that did links as well during shows, does anyone remember an animated guy that presented the music videos part, could have been Chart Show TV but not 100% sure
Bit later, watched it during the early 2010s and loved all the educational stuff on there. Good childhood memories.

i saw a show for nickelodeon be announced, they were hyping it up, then it mysteriously disappeared out of nickelodeon ads and showed up in pop.

In America we don't have pop, we have qubo but due to it's underrated content it shuts down.

Ahhhh POP! I remember growing up with the 2nd set, iconic, looking back it reminds me of how Wacky Warehouse was decorated back in the day. I can’t actually remember loads of programmes from it though, I remember them constantly playing the music videos for ‘Mr Blobby’ and ‘Rowland Rat’ on repeat 😂 please cover Tiny Pop in a future episode 🙏
As for the later idents I’m just unimpressed. Maybe the lack of nostalgia. The ‘multiplying Os’ is like a really bad knock off of the CBeebies bugs. 😬

More like Alvin and Miraculous channel those two are always on they can't even air Total Drama just because of the innuedos As soon as Kix becomes Pop Max it turned to crap they use to have so much variety now they just air crappy shows basically another Nicktoons now all the shows Pop doesn't need in their network will be thrown to their channel literally this Christmas they airing nothing but Nate Is Late and Grizzy and the Lemmings it's sucks

the only reason why i watched pop was because it was one of the main cartoon channels alongside Citv when i go on holiday
God... I used to watch this channel so much during the Bank Holidays in 2013-14. Those were the days, Artzooka, History Hunters, Transformers: Rescue Bots, Sally Bollywood. Amazing.

@@lewisgoestrainspotting What do you mean? The channel is as popular as it’s ever been. They’ve even had their first original commission this year. Most of the shows we grew up with are now gone.

I remember the channel nobody else does from the set Toon&Tunes it used to play Rupert and the Frog Song and I think the switch from Sky One Kids of Totally Spies made it to that version as the first Toon as it was one of the first shows on there that it predated the Pop era starting I think that show did there might have been others but I'd always lose interest when the Music show would stop and Totally Spies started when I already new it from Sky One Kids. Haha
As a citizen of the US I obviously never grew up with Pop but it seems like something I'd enjoy as for me I grew up with Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, and PBS Kids and in my later teen years I sometimes watched KidsClick which Pop really reminds me of for some reason (sadly they died in 2019 (considering they were a free non-cable kids block (that wasn't fully educational) I feel like it could've had a chance to have a popularity boost during 2020 cause what else were you gonna do go outside? (Ok apparently it was for "business reasons" whatever that means so Im not sure if the popularity (if there was any) had anything to do with it)))

It was more Pop Plus I watched I did watch Pop Girl for the reason being there was 2 shows on that channel I liked but my favorite was the channel aimed at boys called Kix

Pop Girl splitting from Pop was the best thing back then it meant more Spies can be shown to bypass the classics quicker guilty pleasures Boys or Men shouldn't like joining it and those new Spies episodes although I'd gotten so bored of the Spies I'd never watched them again after the original with good stuff airing between anyway.
And it let normal Pop thrive after the rebrand as well having that guilty pleasures for us stuff on their own channel and catered for all in mind content on POP.

My era of Tunes&Tunes, POP and POP Girl was definitely the range at the beginning where I'd still even in my early 20s watch it as nostalgia and relaxing programming and in the odd occasion finding something so stupid and so crappy and so Sailor Moon ripoff like Mu Moo Power that I enjoyed it because it was new and it was so bad it's good like what I'm used to from some Indie stuff in the 80s.
Harmony Gold cough cough the bottom line of bad knocked-out Anime dubs including European Dessin Anime in there as well like Little Train 1985, Pinocchio and Frankinstein. The bad Anime like Mu Moo Power takes you back to the bad voice acting in those.
But bad voice talent or dodgey mics on good voice talent gives that kinda nostalgia surprise in there as a throwback to things like that in the past.
That's also probably the thing I remember watching those old Sonic's and Mario's on Channel 4 Kids the voice acting was so bad it's nostalgic and makes it good.

I really can't believe this first CITV is removed last year then Pop a week ago and now this Tiny Pop channel, why are they doing this because if they keep removing kids channel then there won't be any past cartoons/anime on freeview freesat to watched. What has happen to the old days when there are more cartoons to watched on the weekend just like in the 90s/ 2000 now there all gone.

Many of the FOX TV rights 3rd party's made a new 3rd party home on POP after original FOX Kids/Jetix/Kix/Sky Kids as well as the 50/50 with Cable The Children's Channel and Trouble ie. Totally Spies and Power Rangers as well as much of 4 Kids Entertainment with the FOX deal that's why that Totally Spies show survived on there for so long there was probably new episodes then you had old tired reruns they had to dump on their channel to not miss out on what we were already exposed to on Fox before the episodes that finished only just before the move.
I would watch the fun Kids music show with classics from yesteryear then when Spies reruns were on it was nothing new as it was only new just like a few months ago I'd stop watching Toons&Tunes which was pretty much mainly an unfinished Pop Girl without the guilty pleasures like Mu Moo Power on it which was a so stupid Sailor Moon ripoff just Totally Spies rerund mainly from the weeks leading into T&T launch.
