  • Welcome to an all new series here on JoBlo called Gone But Not Forgotten which explores old television shows. You might think these series, once they were taken off the air, disappeared into obscurity never to be heard of again but we've dug up these relics of the past to bask in their sweet nostalgia.
Our third episode covers one of the first shows to tackle superheroes in a way that was watchable and treated the material at least semi-seriously. Of course, we're talking about "The Incredible Hulk" starring the late Bill Bixby as Dr. "David" Bruce Banner, and Lou Ferrigno as the hulk! This look back at "The Incredible Hulk" is written/edited by David Arroyo and Narrated by Awfully Good Movies' Jesse Shade. Were you a fan of The Incredible Hulk? Nobody....and I mean NOBODY can say anything bad about The Incredible Hulk TV series. Sure it was Cheesy, and yes the plots were predictable, recycled and often bad acted.... but ....but...but Bill Bixby was just 100% committed to that show and gave it his all - and as a kid growing up I didnt see any flaws in it..... so for me it was just perfection (even the fake Grizzly bear scene!!)

Bill Bixby HATED the idea of doing a superhero TV series, but it was after reading the pilot script when he realized that it's not a Superhero series. It's a tragedy. Ever since then, Bixby dedicated his life to the series and the character. After the unfortunate cancellation in 1982, He fought hard to bring the show back. I heard that there was supposed to be a crossover/revival between Hulk and Spider-Man in 1984, but was never made.
Then the T.V. movies happened. Originally, Death of The Hulk wasn't going to be the last. The Revenge of The Incredible Hulk was going to retcon Banner's death and have him be cured. In the film's climax, he would be forced to become the Hulk to fight some Gamma mutants.
My point is that Bill Bixby gave everything he had to keep that legacy going and I feel like people are forgetting this masterpiece.

David Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the Incredible Hulk, is a classic. Personally I liked the TV movies too, especially the one with Thor; Ferrigno really beefed up on steroids in the 80s and you could tell from his physique in the TV movies, he was way bigger than he was in the TV series.

This is probably the most underrated Marvel TV show in history. People always complain about how the Edward Norton Hulk film along with the Ang Lee ones have a lack of action and aren't fun, when they were really inspired by this very TV show. The 70s Hulk TV show took a very unique turn with the character. Instead of portraying him as a big godly superhero, the Hulk is simply presented as a mute yet intimidating beast that is also kind and caring once it better understands what's good and what's evil. Bill Bixby's David Banner is also a very touching and compelling character.
It's a shame that this show can't be on Disney+ for newer and younger viewers to discover, so that they can understand how to make an actually good Superhero TV series

One of my favorite episodes of the Incredible Hulk was "Mystery Man". In the second part towards the end of the episode, he changes then goes to the river and sees his reflection in the lake (he slowly transforms back) as he remembers who he is, his curse, his loneliness, why he's on the run ect.... and the extreme sadness he expresses (on his face) and heartbreak as he turns back to David Banner just showed the superb acting by the late Bill Bixby. It wouldn't have worked without him. Same (of course) with Lou Ferrigno, who didn't play the Hulk as scary but like a primitive caveman that was gentle when he wasn't angry.
Anyway the series was amazing. It wasn't perfect but the episodes showed real heart as you hoped he'd find a cure.
    R.I.P Bill Bixby 😔

      @laustcawz2089 Před 3 lety +1

      In the scene you mention,
      David is not transforming back
He is simply removing his bandage
      & recovering his memory,
then realizes that he still must
deal with McGee, who hasn't yet
      figured out Banner's identity.
      A few minutes later,
      a still-bandaged Banner
      confronts McGee's motivation
& then, shortly after, Banner changes
& McGee gets a step closer
to the truth, but not without Hulk
      running off again.

Every Friday night as a boy I couldn't wait to see my favorite t.v. show. Even though it was not like the comic book I was still a fan. The pilot was good. Prometheus was about as close to the comic with the military and scientists involved. The First was good seeing the early version of a Hulk fighting Hulk. The fact that his strength was diminished was hard to fathom because by the time the first movie with Thor and neither can take down a helicopter was sad. Them 2 fighting was cool to see. Him with Daredevil was nice. And the final movie of him falling to his death was absolutely terrible. Again diminished strength reduced him to next to nothing. I own the DVD box set of the series and the 3 t.v. films. Definitely the guy canceling it was a complete moron. This series deserved a longer run. I like your commentating. I grew up watching this show, and I still go back and watch it. I think the Mystery Man two parter was very underrated, where Banner loses his memory from a series car crash explosion, and it isn't until part two when he remembers who he is. He even starts developing a friendship with Jack McGee and gets to see his side of things with no memory, it's a great two parter.
The episode The Harder They Fall is pretty good too, where Banner is paralyzed from the waist down, and for a moment he considers abuses the power of the Hulk so he can walk again, but then his fear of the Hulk killing comes back stopping him.

Joblo, thank you. For an upload tribute of one of the most nostalgia provoking and the first Marvel series I knew. It was it all DC from I was a toddler. From Burton's Batman to TAS to Christopher Reeves' Superman and then my dad introduced me to the incredible Hulk with the immenselu talented Bill Bixby with the raging spirit within him. It strays far from the source material but that's what makes it do awesome in my opinion. I'd love it to happen but I can't see solo stories featuring the Hulk of today or any accurate to the source material Hulk working in Live action sadly. Perhaps it will happen but if not I'll always have the glorious Incredible Hulk complete collection to look back on and many others will have it too 💪

Jo Blo, thank you so much for reviewing this, I have many fond childhood memories of this show, I was around 11 - 12 years old, am 52 now, and remember running down the landing to my friend's house to watch the hulk with him, here in England, I lived in a tower block then, was excited to see the first episode and watched the series with great interest.
I never finished watching the whole series though, as early 80's moved on as you do, but wow! I remember it so well, the opening and closing sequences, the haunting piano theme which really brought out the depressing emotion of Banner's situation and Banner telling Maghee not to make him angry,, good times!
Wonder if you could review the Spider man tv series which was on around the same time? would love to see what you dig up regarding that series too :-)

Bill Bixby is the main reason why this show worked and endures. It's a performance that is way better than it needed to be. The best episodes are as good as anything in superhero live action and that initial transformation in the storm tops any CGI.
As for the shows inspiration, it surely just took the format of The Fugitive and copied that.

Thank you for making this video! This show had a huge impact on me as a little kid, maybe more than any other TV show, and I found myself nodding my head too many times during your video, like with respect to Bixby's acting and Lou's demand for "$40" if you catch him in a photo. I still remember watching the premier episode with my parents in 1977. Were there some goofy moments and did it diverge from the source. Yeah. But overall it was great, and was really Marvel's first live-action success, because the people involved took it seriously. The score was great, Lou was the best way to bring the Hulk to life at the time, and what else can be said about Bixby's acting? Let's be real....he's STILL the best Banner. It just had a lot of the best elements possible to make it work. My personal favorite episode (along with the pilot) is the two-parter, Married, which had such great acting, an emotional story, and more Hulk-Outs than any other episode. I think, Mariette Hartley won an Emmy for that episode. BTW, Johnson had also previously produced The Six Million Dollar Man, along with The Bionic Woman. And one note...the Superman TV series with George Reeve was the first comic book TV show, preceding Batman by nearly a decade. Thanks again. This was fun.

Re-watched it all on Netflix a few years ago. What really made the TV show work was the dichotomy between Banner and the Hulk. David was such a good human being to everyone he came in contact with, but lived in constant fear of his alter ago and always remained on the run after his Hulk outs. The irony is that the Hulk, once dealing with the immediate danger, and apart from the snarling and growling, was actually gentle and childlike. Never been another show like it, combining drama and science fiction, not even close.

I discovered this show when I was 12 and had just finished reading three huge boxes of comic books my brother brought home. I've been a die-hard Marvel fan most of my life because of all of this plus "Spiderman and His Amazing Friends." Whenever I'm in a dark-and-70s-depressing mood, iI revisit this show beginning to end. I even watched it recently and didn't find most of it too painful. Sure, you can set your clock by the two transformations of the show. Super formulaic and, well, cheese. But I still love it. Bixby kind of felt like one of my replacement dads since mine kind of sucked. I didn't even register that Castle's mom from "Castle" was his partner on that first episode, even after I watched both repeatedly. I love how loyal to fans of this show the MCU's "Incredible Hulk" was, even playing "Lonely Man" and recreating the death scene with Banner jumping out of a flying vehicle, hitting the ground from high up, and NOT DYING, but coming out as the Hulk. Still love that movie, even if a lot of people don't see its charm. Hail to the cheese.

All joking aside, The Incredible Hulk was intelligently written, wonderfully acted, heartfelt, sincere and moving. You really felt touched by David's plight, his desperation and loneliness. The best or at least my favorite "Man On The Run" type series. I think it's the best and most underrated of the Marvel TV shows. Kids could watch it but it was made with adults in mind. And it came out during the 70's so of course it's a bit dated that's to be expected but that doesn't take away from what an excellent series it was/is.
