My Experience with the Splash Drone 3

  • I wanted to get sailing footage of the boat at sea, but being a novice drone pilot I was afraid of launching and landing a drone from the boat. SwellPro appeared to have the answer with the Splash Drone 3, a fully waterproof drone with 4K video capability and, most importantly, the ability to take off and land from the water. This meant that I would not have to be an expert pilot to get great footage, only the ability to pluck the drone out of the water with a boat hook after each flight. The only drawback seemed to be the hefty $1.7K price tag, but being so eager to get great sailing footage it was a risk I was willing to take.
    Well I did get some decent footage. Unfortunately this drone developed problems about one month out of the box. I had to buy a new camera for it when water seeped into the original one. Then a rotor began to wobble. SwellPro customer service was less than stellar. Long story short I ended up listing the drone on eBay for parts. It sold for $200.

    So glad I found your channel while searching CZcams for video's using the Splash Drone 3 Plus. In all honesty, I was about to spend around $2,500.00 bucks to get the premium setup for this thing. I surf fish in Destin Florida and wanted a reliable way to get 1kg of tackle 1,000ft out. This video just changed my mind. I can deal with hardware issues, but I can't deal with a shady company that blames the customer for everything. Thank you for helping me with my decision and thank you for your honesty. The power of relationship can be awesome. When purveyors treat their consumers with respect, brand loyalty is earned. However, when they fail to be accountable to realistic expectations...keelhaul them slowly and repeatedly by their damn toes until respect is forthcoming. This is the evolving power of consumers in the age of social media.

    What an incredible thorough review of the Swellpro Splash Drone, I don't think yours was just a lemon, seems the company has all sorts of problems with their waterproof drones by reading reviews on the internet. And even Dustin Dunnill had problems with his Swellpro when he tried it out right out of the box. Some of the reviews even pointed out their customer service is poor. Honestly, thinking on how much you paid, maybe I'm better off just picking up a reliable DJI Mavic Mini or Fimix X8. And if it crashes, it crashes, just deal with my losses. When a drone only works for a couple of months for the price you paid, that just plain sucks. I'm just glad you decided to make such a thorough review about your experiences with both Swellpro and Urban Drones, people like you make a difference for all of us. What you just described did happened to me as well. Firstly when I first started flying the craft. I took to Mexico all excited to us e for fishing. On the first trial after doing all of the calibrations and so forth on it’s first flight one the props went loose and was never to be found in the sand. After replacing the prop and not wanting the fun to be spoiled I tried again, all went well until i reached the water to launch my bait when suddenly the drone flew straight up and came down crashing . I reported the incident to Urban Drones where I purchased it and the response was that I did not use the proper calibrations. So I was instructed et to send along and get it repaired by them at my cost? When all said and done I finally received the drone back. Went on a flight test and all went well for the first two trials then the drone had a mind of it’s own and went nuts flew straight away from me at a two feet height, tried to cut off power but was unsuccessful until it crashed and got damaged.. Had to send it back again at my cost with a whole letter of explanations. They finally gave a new one. Since then I tried once it worked great although I am now very nervous about using it and just stored it on a shelf.. their service needs some serious adjustment and friendliness not to mention customer service courtesy. I would never buy that product again especially forking out that kind of money.

So far everything about it is better than SwellPro, except it's not waterproof of course ... just did some flying drills yesterday, did a box, then a circle with different orientations. @@howtosailoceans1423 the better your pilot skills the faster you'll be able to correct a correctable problem, that only covers about 25% of what can go wrong, multiplied by the ocean. If you're interested we can gut and refit the shell of the splash drone 3. It would only cost between $100 to $300. New drone brain would give you a much much better flight experience. It's just a lot of DIY and low voltage electronics. The issue you're having with the motor is a little concerning because it means replacing all four Motors (which may be cheaper then) or buying one Factory replacement motor.

    Good to pass the word along, Kevin. Whenever I buy expensive items like this I look for independent reviews from previous buyers. I will be in the market for a drone to fly me recently purchased GoPro Fusion (360 camera) which I plan to tank some nice footage of kayaking and sailing in and around Deer Isle this summer.

    Thank you for another great video! I was looking into buying a splash drone a year ago. The splash drone just seemed too good to be true. Then I learned in Milwaukee you really can't legally fly a drone with in 10 miles of the airport. I just couldn't justify spending 1700 on something I couldn't legally use. however I am still interested in buying a drone. After watching your video if I buy a drone it will NOT be a splash drone. I think its better to go with a DGI drone. Sorry for your loss. Its hard to believe that the splash drone doesn't care that you have over 6000 people that watch your videos and see how there product fails.

  • @trevorbrasch4595
    @trevorbrasch4595 Před 5 lety

    Firstly, I've been following you right from the start and value your sailing skill, fresh hands on, low tech approach the most of all the videos I watch. I'd say stick with that...as others have said. I was always sceptical of that drone claiming to be waterproof and I'm surprised it's lasted as long as it has. Non-housing cameras (and one without a positive waterproofing system) with salt water is a recipe for trouble. It also seems (by the battery itself and it's leads), that this drone is a collection of low-quality parts in an interesting housing. I build these things as a hobbiest. I almost guarantee that the motor with the bad bearing is what was causing the erratic behaviour near the end of its life. The accelerometers and gyros on the flight control board are very sensitive to vibration outside a certain frequency range..so it wasn't your error. It would be nice if you had someone there to help you rebuild it....the electronic components really aren't that expensive. Anyway, keep up the great work. Always love the videos and the music :) Cheers from Canada.

    I know this video is over a year old now and not sure if the seal design issue on the camera has been corrected or not. I was looking into a waterproof drone to purchase to use for fishing on my boat or onshore. the seal for the camera I have to agree with you is a piece of !@#$@# design and water can easily be breached even though you press the seal into the opening. Most companies will find ways to blame the operator error or owner just to prevent them from the expense and cost of the repair or replacement for flaw design issues. There are companies that do back up their product like Scotty maker of downriggers, Bennett maker of trim tabs, etc and I have dealt with these companies for my boat parts. Before finding your video I was watching another video and told myself there is a design flaw on the seal for the camera. Sure enough, I found your video water breach on the camera. Not only the camera I also see a possible design issue with the main cover to the drone where the four screws water breach can occur if it does not have an O ring seal. And also watch out on people bias reviews in favor of the company/manufacturer...

    I feel a side video coming along with you taking the darn thing apart, water proofing / upgrading as required and then seeing how it flies. I'm sure you could build a much better quality drone. As for crashing... customize it with bendy bamboo circlets and springs. If it bumps into something it'll just bounce off because it'll hit the bamboo/springs not the actual drone.
    At any rate, looking forwards to more videos!

    If it's any consolation, my Walkera Tali H500 isn't much better. It looks great, the camera gimble is decent, no geo-fencing, six rotors and fast, but very prone to flyaway/crash mode in GPS. There's no height-hold either. So it's basically fly in manual mode. That's ok in man. mode, except doing that in gusty, breezy weather makes very challenging to hold altitude and once it gets high, trying to bring it down without a VRS state is a hazard, real heart in your mouth time.
    It needs a total internal changeout to a NAZA system to be reliable on GPS etc to solve these issues. So it's about a couple of hundred bucks to get the parts in for that.

DJI are the most popular but very restrictive and the multiple updates suck. We are now flying an Autel Evo which is by far the best bang for the buck. No geo fencing and you can get the drone up in a matter of seconds. Customer service is excellent. For under $1000.00 bucks you can take your youtube channel to the next level.
