    The Falcon was my introduction to the RC world back in 1987! So many things broke right away and I would upgrade to the newest aftermarket parts available. Replaced all of the brass bushings with bearings in the gearbox and all four corners. That simple upgrade alone made it so much faster. Then the axle shafts broke, updated them with steel dogbone axles. The list goes on & on. Watching this brings back a lot of fun memories.

      I am glad you enjoyed the trip down memory lane! It is a great lookin buggy and I wish it was not such a risk to drive it as I would love to drive it around but the parts are getting so hard to find and expensive it just is not worth it! I would love for them to re-release it just to drivable stock and parts. That and I know tons of folks that would love to get one! Maybe one year soon I hope!

    WOW, amazing job of restoring this classic Falcon! These are awesome! I never had a Falcon. I love the classic electronics right down to the old school Futaba Radio and the mechanical speed controller. I used to hate those back in the day because they would get so hot and melt or jam. Or if you were dumb like me you'd get burnt by the resistor lol. I need to find an old school kit to build or a car to try and restore. Thankfully the internet makes it so easy to find parts and replica stickers/bodies so it's possible compared to not that long ago. I'm kicking myself for not keeping my original Astute and Dyna Blaster.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Před rokem +1

      Yeah it is a lot easier now to be able to rebuild these! I had kind of given up on finding one worth rebuilding and next thing I know one shows up!! It is a cool little buggy and I am very happy with the way it turned out.
      We all fried fingers/knuckles on motors and resistors back in the day! One distinct smell from my childhood I remember is the smell of mud puddle water sizzling off of the resister!! I hope I never forget it!!
      I have a couple I regret letting go in the past, mostly my Traxxas Sledgehammer truck, I really miss that thing and it is hard to find them in good shape now. There is still plenty of time to find another though and even if I don't there are plenty of good memories with it!

      I was shocked on how good of shape it was in and that he was able to pick this up at a swap meet for next to nothing! I have paid more for RadioShack cars than he paid! LOL!
      It just felt like the right thing to do to build it back 100% stock and like it would have been back in the day. The only upgrade would be the receiver does have a BEC so I did not have to install the 4 AA battery holder, but the mounting tray for it is in there!

    The falcon! I told you I had one, as a young moneyless human that was affordable to my pockets. Wheels too small and fantastic front shocks passing through the suspension arm. And it was drivable too. Now I would like to have it again. Thank for the video. Ciao, Nanni

      Thanks Nanni! I am very happy with the way it turned out and I love the way the shock goes though the front arms, it is a very unique look! I hope maybe one day you will find one to replace yours!

    Hi there Addam, cannot beat a bit of old school detergent and good old fashion patience and elbow grease. Although most people regard cleaning as a chore, but to me, that’s maintenance. Some great hints and tips to clean up some of the parts and catching the existing threads. It turned out really well, sorry about the sticker, damn static electricity! 😂. Best wishes 😊😊😊.

      @AddamsPlayground  Před rokem +1

      Yeah standing there scrubbing little bits and pieces did get a little old but it was very rewarding to see it all come back together with all the nice looking, clean parts. I made sure to get the tiny paint brush into every little corner and pocket on there to make sure once things dried it was all going to be clean. I am very happy with the results and I am glad you enjoyed it! That sticker got sucked down like an invisible finger pressed it down!! I was surprised on how well it stuck for just touching but I was able to cover the boo-boo with some of the extras!

      @AddamsPlayground  Před rokem +1

      Yeah, I may have a bit of shop envy for the cool tools he has but I am not there yet in CAD design to think about getting anything like that yet! This was a cool project as there are multiple channels involved in the build and that just adds to the story for me! I am really happy with the way it turned out and it was a bunch of scrubbing things with a toothbrush and a paint brush (fingers were very wrinkly at the end) but it was all worth it to put it back together in such mint shape! the scratches on the bottom are fine and help tell the story as well!
      That stupid laptop had been grinding away on that update for a long time and waited until I was recording to finish and restart! I had to leave that in there!

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Před rokem +1

      Thanks! You are welcome and that really works well getting the screws back into the threads. As soon as you feel the click stop and start screwing it in. ((5 of the time you go right back into the same threads. Once in a while you don't feel the defined click and just have to go by feel alone! The little screwdriver helps with that as well as if it goes in easily with the little driver you can be confident it is in the right spot!

      When I first got it I just assume they were worn down but when I went to take them off the wheels I realized they have cut the knobs off the sides. Not sure what the reason was but it was interesting! I have snipped tires before but it was to open up the tread pattern of a lot of spikes but these are already wide open design! Maybe the were going to for low dollar slicks...

    What a fine looking buggy. Kudos for not changing out the chassis. I sometimes feel that the car loses its “soul” when it gets its original, but still perfectly good, chassis tossed. Strange, I know..

      It came out looking great and the scratches and scars under it is just its story that it was loved already!! I agree tossing aside everything showing wear takes away from it being an original and a survivor! It will look great in the collection and it will be ready to head out and run around anytime I want so I am very happy!

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Před rokem

      Thank you, thank you and thank you!! LOL!
      Everything was in perfect shape and no indication of stress or cracking at all so I felt like it was destined to stay all original. I love the way it turned out and even the sticker goof made it a little bit different than anyone else's! I do use the soapy water technique or if I am lazy, windex! I usually only do that on the very large ones or when they are in really awkward positions. This one was a fluke as when I was going to go to get it lined up the body and the sticker sucked together from static electricity and I had to peel it up in that one corner! It was just something I was not expecting but maybe next time I hit the spot with a spritz of soapy water just in case!
      In general I have been very happy with the MCI decals but this is the second time I have seen the orange color flake from trying to reposition the sticker. All the other colors seem to take it very well.

    First tamiya i ran back in 80s,still have it but its not running.The plastic drive shafts were always a problem as they would wear easy and fall out.Great job on this buggy but dont run it hard as old plastics will bresk easily.

      @AddamsPlayground  Před rokem

      This is the first one I have seen in person! I do remember seeing the box of one in the hobby shop way back when but never saw an assembled one in the flesh! Thankfully this one was driven but not a ton. The drive line has a little bit of play in it but perfectly acceptable amount and I don't have to worry about it tossing driveshafts anytime soon. I will get it out for a run but it won't be bombing around on the track, just bopping along in the yard!

    Nice rebuild Addam, it looks great!
    I just sold the Falcon I refurbished at a swap meet this past fall.
    I’ve currently got my Duratrax bug stripped down…the plastics are mostly done…have you got any tips for the hardware cleaning for someone who doesn’t have one of those machines?
    Great video!👍😊

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Před rokem +1

      I am sad but somewhat thankful we don't have swap meets around me! I would have a stack of project cars sitting around here LOL!!!
      For the hardware I have built some interesting things to clean them with!! Before the ultrasonic cleaner it was either degreaser and a tooth brush or a homemade cleaner. I have a wand type back massager and you take a small Tupperware container (or something similar) and pour in the degreaser (purple power, super clean, etc.) about half full and tape that to the end of the massage wand. it may work best taped to the top instead of the side of the massage head. Add you hardware and run for 5-10 minutes.
      A solo cup and degreaser will work, just put it all in there and give it a shake and a swirl everyonce in a while over a afternoon working on something and 98% of the grease and grime should come off! If you have an old motor and (old/bad) pinion take the pinion off and grind off a few teeth on one side and tape that to the cup. run the motor for a bit and it shake them for you. Don't go nuts on the grinding, just a little bit will making it off center and shake a little!

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Před rokem +1

      Thank you and have fun with your project! The stand is a foam yoga block you can find on Amazon or many stores that carry any exercise gear. The ones I get usually measure 9 inches long, 6 inches wide and 4 inches thick. I will cut them in half on my bandsaw to be able to get two blocks from one big one. For displaying the trucks or for a work block I will cut them to 9x3x4 and for the buggies I have been cutting them at 4 inches wide on one end to 2 inches wide on the other end to make that wedged shape you saw in the video. It works nice to pitch them forward to be able to see more of the body!

      @AddamsPlayground  Před rokem +1

      Hi Max! Thanks for stopping by and checking things out! I appreciate it! The car stands are foam yoga blocks. They are made from EVA foam just like some specific, made for RC type stands and I can usually find 2-packs of them on sale on Amazon for around $12-15. I try and get the 4x6x9 blocks and I cut them in half on my band saw to 4x3x9 and they work great for the trucks and buggies. I often cut the buggy ones on an angle 2 inch on one end and 4 inch on the other so the kind of lean forward to show off the bodies a bit more.

    I hope Tamiya does a re-issue of this buggy in the future. I have the re-issued Hornet, Frog, and Wild One Bockhead Motors edition, and enjoy all of them. Of all the classic 80s Tamiya buggies, I always wanted a falcon since I was a young teen. A Blockhead Motors edition of the Falcon would be especially sweet if Tamiya came out with it.

      I think this buggy and the Toyota Hilux pickup are possibly the two most requested kits that they make a re-release of! I am sure they are others right up there with them but I feel like these may be the top two! I have both of them and would buy a re-release of both of them in a heartbeat! Maybe even two of them! I am sure they will eventually but they need to hurry up as the demographic for these kits is getting older by the day!
