I have been using megasquirt for about 20yrs now so all of the other systems seem simple to me. MS has a huge learning curve. In the long run I am glad I went that way with how much knowledge I picked up over the years. Can it be a PITA, yes. But you actually get to learn how the circuits work. It really helped my electrical diag skills back when I was an automotive tech.

A little while back, I signed up for your Trilogy course. The plan was to get familiar and go with Holley dominator but literally, right after I finally pulled the trigger, I ran into someone locally that has a very respectable, tuning reputation and is happy to work with me and he has me 99% convinced to go with Motec. (He would be happy to help with Holley if that was my choice but he much prefers Motec and makes a a pretty compelling argument.)
I have never logged into my Trilogy membership and I am hoping that Trilogy will help me to get a better understanding Motec.
Part of me considered asking if i could opt out for a refund (Since I never logged in) but I know that would be a crappy, low life, scumbag move I since made the decision to sign up and its nothing to do with you that my circumstances have changed.

Best is that ROG comes with software to control fan speeds manually, you can set different fan target speeds based on GPU and CPU temps. One of the most common problems for laptops is a hard drive itself the first thing you should do and ditch some mechanical drive and switch it to an SSD and get a decent one Also it doesn't hurt to help keep it clean after all the internal fans do get dirty overtime.

I’d say your pretty much spot on with your view on ECU’s .
It all comes down to many variables, engine , who can map it , budget, expand ability, even false economy has to be considered .
Me personally I don’t need or have much interest in the ‘mapping’ side , I’d just rather leave it to a professional tuner with experience and not make very expensive map mistakes and dyno time .
Yeah by all means have ago your self and good luck , but make sure it’s on a cheap replaceable engine and get your experience there . But I doubt you will not get the same results as a specialist and end up spending more money on re dyno time .
We’ve just gone Motec M142 for direct injection and external injection, plus the sequential gearbox and traction control features . before you know it it will be a 10k job including map .
Yeah we will have a nice dash and PDM but it’s also piece of mind plus maintenance and expansion is far superior long term . All can bus pls a lot less wiring and more reliability.
In our case why would you risk a poor setup/ dodgy map on a 15k engine?
Cheap ecu , crappy map and wave goodbye to 20k plus the additional cost when it blows up !! ? Plus wasted time ?
Always do everything as good a spec as possible within your budget, buy good quality used components is a great way to be cost effective, plus be respectful to your dyno guy , yeah he may be expensive at times but a decent one will help you out if your straight with him . 🇬🇧👍

A big part of me wants to upgrade to an EFI set up but I feel like it maybe more of a headache. It’s not even hard to tune a carburetor. Just have your timing right, fuel pressure correct and install an air fuel gauge. With my Chevy 350 I just basically need to replace a metering rod in my Edelbrock depending if it’s running rich or lean. But I do like the ability of the EFi once tuned. Maybe I’ll give EFI a go some day. Possibly the higher end Holley or Edelbrock proflo 4.

The MoTec 800 series was the gold standard for well over a decade. No gremlins, it just did what you programmed it to do. Can’t say that was the case with all ecu’s until a few years ago. MoTec , syvecs and a few others are still top tier and custom tables for anything are available. It’s important to set your goals with the car. If it’s going to be a 6,7 second car a terminator with a separate traction control ecu isn’t the best answer. If you need to diagnose something quickly before heading to the finals the top tier boxes will get you there and to the podium. An example would be Brett lasala’s snot rocket. Small engine , MoTec and dialed.

I personally want to go halt ech 750 since my car is all- motor and I Don t mind if not want to re-wire the engine harness to get rid of the splicing I had to do to get Gm parts to work with a Mitsubishi. And get rid of an emulator for speed density that's near impossible to even get my laptop to connect to it to tune. My tuner suggests a link g4x for an evo8 and re-pin it to worth with my 94 3000gt. But that doesn't get rid of the somewhat hacked up harness (mostly the tps). And links are less popular for tuners here than haltechs. Difficult decision to make lol.

usually if the car isnt 1000 years old the factory ecu will run the engine just fine assuming its supported with a program like HP Tuners or something. most switch to an aftermarket ecu either to make tuning more simple, take advantage of closed loop control/safeties and things like that, "motorsports" features, and then there is the I/O which is where the aftermarket stuff really shines.

Yes we are all on a budget and no point considering an ecu you can't afford but not only does spending a little more usually get you way more value it. can also save you untold time and money down the road with troubleshooting and safeties etc.

As someone who builds computers and does tech support. The only laptop I saw worth owning there was the Thinkpad due to it being a robust workhorse, even if it isn't the most powerful. Alienware is owned by Dell and is over priced trash. 80% of people that didn't use the laptop as a desktop princess saw theirs fall apart in 6 to 9 months. If you bought the Macbook new and it is the new ARM processor. Congrats, you bought a ticking time weight due to a major design flaw. They M2 line got ride of the bios configs and whatnot off a chip on the motherboard. Now they have all that on the MVNE drive. This issue with this? That motherboard is tied too that drive. It goes out at the end of it's read/write cycles. Depending on use, in 3 years. Your drive is bricked and even if you buy a new drive for it. The motherboard won't know what to do with it. Then you are forced to buy a new laptop if you want it working. The engineered obsoletion to force costumers into buying more is the most anti consumer bullshit I have ever seen. Seeing Apple's fight against the right to repair up till recently. This logically makes since that they made this choice.
If you are going to buy a gaming laptop on a budget that is better build quality and lasts long. MSI is great. Even if you only pickup one with a 4 gig gpu. Most have 6 core cpus or better designed for gaming. AMD has been making amazing APUs with graphics cores on the same die. This allows low power, less intensive taks to run on the APU (CPU with on board graphics cores). The added bonus is, If you are recording and running screenshare in i.e. OBS. You can have your video encoder running on your APU and then all other software, including multiple tabs on a web browser on your GPU. This concept can apply to other apps that support this feature. Giving you the ability to distribute the workload more efficiently. The added bonus of paying a little more for a low end gaming laptop from MSI even when not gaming. That hardware is overpowered for many applications outside animation, gaming, and CAD work. Therefore. You pick up a good MSI for 800-900 bucks, that laptop will last many years of use. Far more and still be snappy for what used outside of the 3 mentioned than what you showed on your table for your selection of computers.
Though I like your presentation and comparisons, objectively. Your lack of higher detailed knowledge on PC's and Macs shows a bit. I think if you used the same lens of scrutiny with a better knowledge of computers. This would be one of the most through ways to tackle for the common folk. I respect your mindset going into this though. Should you ever need suggestions. Feel free to reach back out.
How you approach this though did earn a subscribe. Keep being a BAMF!
