Best female singer that ever lived.
AGREED!
BEST SINGER EVER, period, any human being!
As a professional drummer myself i must say she had the best singing voice I've ever heard from a drummer, people think it's easy playing drums and singing but ladies and gentlemen it's not timing is the key and she had it and never ever missed a beat that's how good she was, like i said I'm a professional drummer myself backup singing yes but singing a beautiful song like the one she just sang i wouldn't even wanna try, I'll stick to playing my drums singing is for people like karen who are so talented it almost makes you wanna cry, karen i miss you as a fellow drummer but sweetheart you were the best, R.I.P GOD BLESS YOUR SOUL. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
how about Don Hanley from Eagles ? the best male drummer vocalist if the female was Karen..
It's so heartbreaking that no one was able to save her. She was so beautiful, so talented, and will always be missed. ❤❤
I was in the front row of the Ryman Auditorium balcony at the taping of this Johnny Cash Show segment. Karen’s matchless voice in that hallowed hall was a sensory overload. We were delighted when it was announced that there was a glitch in the audio and they’d have to sing Rainy Days again. The first time any of us had heard that timeless gem. Unforgettable. ♥️🎶🌹
They were singing this song live? It wasn't a soundtrack?
@@joecarter9198 As well as I remember, Karen and Richard were singing live. I think the background vocals were prerecorded tracks.
@@madman37115 Yes, the carpenters never sang fully live. It wouldn't be practical to replicate live the extreme levels of layered harmonies they built into all their songs. Could they have done it? Sure, but it wouldn't make much sense to do so.
This one is lip synched, but check out the BBC special to hear Karen sing this live.
@@billsnoderly8401 Sounds like it. Usually they sing live on the Tonight show.
I have been in love with a dead woman for 7 years i can honestly say she was the greatest female vocalist that ever lived no-one will ever equal her
And I, for more than 30 years.
She lives in the hearts of millions around the world.
Me too
I think a lot of people are in love with her. Not only for her voice but her sweet personality and natural beauty. She just made you feel good with her presence. The Carpenters were not only two sibling geniuses but two innovative, creative, and genuinely nice people. I was lucky enough to work on their 1978 Christmas special. It was a very impressive display of talent and good vibes. I'm a fan forever!
@@hornerinf I agree. She just draws you in with her presence and singing.I'm in my mid 50's and a classic/hard rock type of guy.Led Zeppelin,The Who,Van Halen to name a few but I've always loved the Carpenters sound.
Karen Carpenter is pitch perfect and amazing every time. She was in a league of her own.
OMG I was 5 years old !!!! How can someone be that young and still remember 54 years later ? I'm stunded !
Karen being a drummer had impeccable timing and translated into her singing. Always in tune and always on time and always beautiful.
She had a natural voice, so that will always make it easier. But she used it very well.
Not many drummers can do that. They always seem to be singing with the drum beat.
That first 'always get me down' after the key change - my god. She was astonishing.
This is the sound of my childhood.Karen Carpenter's voice always takes me back there...
She was so cute behind those drums. Pure talent.
Voice of an angel
THE VOICE!! THE DRUMMER!! THE LEGACY!!
gorgeous too!
Karen Carpenter had the most beautiful voice. I would rate her voice in the top five of all time for sure.
Agree. She could've sung anything, it would've been angelic.
Have to disagree Richard! I have Karen hands down as The Greatest singer who ever lived!
Just incredible. She’s doing five things at once. Impeccable precision. Leaves me in awe every time I watch her
❤ Karen Carpenter forever❤.
Wow, I have never heard anybody with these vocal chops Karen was blessed with such vocal range and wonderful tone that is so unbelievably amazing, We will never hear talent like hers ever a completely pro. She should be in the Rock Hall Of Fame along her Brother and talented band, She is so delightful to listen to!
Recorded March 24, 1971. What a gem.
I was a little kid when this came out. I never forgot.
Thank you! I always live to know the date- what was going on in the world when this was floating on the airwaves.
Watching this on a rainy Monday morning in September 2021. Truly a timeless talent
Weeping when I dwell on the subject of Karen Carpeter. Her voice was so beautiful. The world lost love Feb. 4, ‘83.
Lovely Karen!
Rainy days are great!
Mondays are great as I'm now retired and Mondays are no longer the curse they once were.
I only wish you were here to enjoy this this us......................
Such a rare, fine 💎 Gem!
When it came to join the junior high band, I took the drums...because of her. Bless her memory. That voice, oh my......
I cry every time here that sweet voice. What an angel. 😢
Also Happy Birthday. FROM TEXAS
She was a one of a kind. The voice like the sound of an Angel playing a harp.
That means you are a lady with a great heart!❤❤
Imagine sing a song with no deflections...just talent.
The incomparable Karen Carpenter. I still miss her so.
Just think, Karen is barely 20 years old here. Just amazing talent!!
I will always love Karen. Beauty, grace and talent. RIP darling.
She was so talented!! It's unbelievable that she left us so early...
on cash ....at the ryman!!!..karen is so young,, start to their career...awesome..
Žalosno kako je završila!😢😢😢😢😢
Wow. First time seeing this performance. As always, so impressive...
Biggest Talent in the World

I always cry when I hear Karen Carpenters music! What a beautiful voice, RIP Karen
Perfect timing for them and a deep meaningful story. We will always love them🎉
Love her too
Gifted, Shy, Fragile. Godspeed for a vocalist that will never come again.
Soul voice, can erase your pressure in life, thank you karen, wonderful voice
How smooth is that lady's Voice
johnny cash had good taste. sounds *exactly* like the original recording.
That’s because it is. Studio version lip synced unfortunately but most of the tv shows went that way after Burt Sugarman converted the format to lip syncing circa 1971-72
@@Samscoinsandheavymetal She was very good at lip syncing too.
Search BBC Carpenters, there is a 45 minute live recording, its great.
@Dbo83 it’s not live.
But think what you like
The opening close to you was live
And maybe the other songs were too
I don’t know as I’ve not heard the whole concert - but RD&M was NOT live
There’s only one female singer Karen
Yet if you listen to the background vocals have her voice doubled even tripled harmonizing. Also, note the other big band instruments being played yet are missing from the stage (ie ghost played instruments).
There are many different studio versions in the archives
And probably dozens more never released or heard by the public
Listen to all the backing vocals
Then listen to all their other performances
The difference is they have other band members backing hence different voices which many people have stated in other videos they don’t like because they want the original sound of rich and Karen only
(Which to be is ludicrous but hey we all have our own opinions so whatever. Listen to the album if you want to hear a replica of the studio version )
A lot of casual listeners ( those who don’t play an instrument or study music cant often tell the difference between live and studio).
You need to listen catefully
@@Samscoinsandheavymetal Thank you, Mr./Ms. Know-It-All.
@@Samscoinsandheavymetal Some parts of this were pre-recorded (instruments, backing vocals) but Karen's voice is LIVE in this performance. There are several notes in which she sings that differ from the studio version. Subtle, but they are there. The fact is that she was such a good singer that it's hard to tell if it's live or recorded, so you have to hear the slightest difference to know.
Thanks for posting this! I love seeing anything Karen was a part of.My favorite singer since 1970.What a great person and talent.Love You and Miss You forever Karen!
What an exceptional performance for being live
The sound coming from Karen in that time was one thing; the other is the visual.😍😍😍😍
Did you post this today because it would have been Karen's 70th birthday?
What a beautiful voice Karen had. I really appreciate their music now even more than when I was a kid in the 70’s. It’s only gotten better with time. The only thing about this video that I didn’t like was not being able to see the other musicians and back ground singers which also played a big part in their harmonies.
The most greatest artists never made it past the 90s
Truth be told they were no longer revelvant by the 80s
@@pod831 except for MJ
Wonderful !
Very very beautiful..
若い兄妹二人、いいですね💖
貴重な映像ありがとー😉👍️🎶
Très belle vidéo des Carpenters dans ce show de Johnny Cash.
I miss her she was a doll
I was only 8 years old when this song was out have an older sister so knew and have always liked the music. Too think she was only 12 years older than me.
Haa! Me too! 8yrs old & big sis played this all the time.Sis is a year younger than Karen. We still listen to and talk fondly of Karen.Karen is still my all time favorite singer. She was so warm and friendly and had the best voice I had ever heard. We will never forget her.
Great to see this in good quality, sadly it's been edited as originally they sang "For All We Know" followed by "Rainy Days..."
I had a feeling these Cash shows were being trimmed for time. Very annoying.
that's maddening!
Wow, thanks for sharing. Shame they used to mime so much on those shows. I know they did in those days, but that incredible live snippet from Close to You shows just how perfect her voice was. Incredible tone, timbre and resonance. She could have sung Rainy Days live just as easily and matched the studio vocal if not bettered it. I wonder what she felt about miming?
I think she actually might be singing, it does sound very close, but there are differences between the recorded version and this one. I think they are using some of the recording obviously for the backing instruments. But the drums at least I am pretty sure she is playing here, its different from the recording.
The Close to You intro is definitely sung live. I can just tell - it is styled in the same was as the short piece they did to open the singles 1969 -1973, but without the vibraphone. Not sure about Rainy Days. It sounds mimed to me, but still wonderful to see.
She is definitely lip synching on RD&M.
@@mattn6591 All pre-record....
@@dannydougin3925 probably to promote the single

Karen Carpenter was such a great singer.
Beautiful voice of Karen Carpenter. 🙏
she sounds better live, then she does on vinyl, a true talent, only in the 70,s sadly never to be repeated
Shame she is gone so early
just incredible - and on the Johnny Cash Show .....LIVE....
This was labeled 'Mills and Boon' music in London (GB) at the time (a Romantic book genre) ..... BUT ... its on Johnny's show... it's LIVE....so I'll watch him show the rest of them how its done ....LIVE.
As Johnny was introducing them I thought 'whats going on - he seems to like them ....its Mills and Boon for F Sake'....
and then Karen started ...is this Real? I thought this was supposed to be live?....She's s NOT (miming)...
Do you hear that? F me.. this is live ..
EVERY WORD is meant and straight from....
And with headphones?
JUST TRY IT
Wow
What a voice always been my heroin x
You have to be in a spiritual zone to play drums and sing like that without missing a beat.
Johnny should have performed a song with them...
"If I were a carpenter"
Karen was perfect
The greatest singer with heart and emotion and pain: Karen Carpenter
Dusting off the Cristmas album.
eres una luz en los cielos
Karen was always happiest when she could play her drums while singing.
💲
I wonder why they played a bit of "For All We Know" in the background between :49 to :57?
i never really like the carpenters music. still don't. but man do i love her voice! she is on another level even all these years later.
classic
Karen Carpenter, Laura Branigan and Donna Summer. The greatest female vocalists ever. RIP ladies.
I will always love you Karen.
I went to a Paul Williams concert a few months ago. He does very little singing, mostly story telling. There was a young girl singing his hits (like this one). No doubt about it she was good but I think that the audience, including me, would have preferred hearing him sing his songs.
The song close to you by carters
I can't hear it? Can the volume be increased please. I am wearing headphones too with volume on video player turned to 100%. You may get 100's of 1000's of views if the volume was high enough to enjoy. Thank you.
her and anne murray have identical voices
この歌有名ですよね。
Johnny Cash loving on Karen! What a Woman!
Karen ❤
I love Karen to bits.
1970, when hairstyling was in its infancy.
She's lip-syncing , right? --- (everything sounds too perfect.) (For one thing, where is the string section?)
Its Ironic everyone on that stage and in this clip is dead except for Richard.
Karen😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
*******
Sigh.
She sings the intro Close To You perfectly...then has to lip-sync Rainy Days and Mondays. Why? The woman was a brilliant live vocalist.
Who says she is lip syncing here? Karen was unique in that her live vocals were spot on with her studio vocals!
And please note that she is drumming while singing live here, too!
I think she has a backing track in Rainy Days and Mondays. I don’t think her background singers were able to reproduce their sound for that song outside the studio.
