Did you know you can bag in 1st place in mk8dx? Shock bagging is good to protect against red shells and blue shells, because the coin is too common in 1st. Thanks Nintendo!

Fun fact: since item probabilities are partially based on distance, if you have a big enough lead then 2nd place starts pulling mushrooms and stars instead of red shells! Basically, get good. JK they start pulling triple reds at that point 😊
I wouldn't be as upset with a 40% red shell rate if they were closer to how they worked in Wii and not trained US snipers with 300 confirmed kills trained in 38 different martial arts and also knows your ip address
You could dodge red shells entirely in DD!. It required a modicum of skill and timing, and not dodging them was frustrating because it was my fault, not because the game didn't give me a banana or green shell. You couldn't hold items out the back of the kart though. The Wii item distribution was wack. How many times have I been hit by a blue shell right in front of the finish line. Ugh. Felt like playing a slot machine rather than a racing game.
This also can be applied to single item boxes if you have a coin already. So if you have a coin in 1st hold onto it if your going through a single box set
Yesssss people ask me this all the time, it's good to spread this knowledge. Generally you should hold a coin if there is a single box coming up, to guarantee a red shell defense

I’m convinced that the people that are always saying bagging is cheating have never played an online race lol, that would explain the “going fast all the time wins you the race” argument since that works with the CPUs usually
I play online all the time and i hate bagging because of the mere concept of winning first by staying last which is counterintuitive. If I ever win by bagging the victory feels empty because I got extra lucky. You are adding an extra layer of skill and luck on top of the skill and luck already needed to win Plus you can still bag and not get good enough items needed so losing feels even worse because you decided to stay back
It’s not necessarily cheating, it’s just cheap. It’s using a catchup mechanic Nintendo put in to make the game fun for 3 year olds as a strategy to let the game cheat for you. Wow that’s amazing you held back and didn’t try to race for two laps until you got a star and a bullet bill, you’re so skilled!
@@jonazo7188 if you still think that bagging is all about getting lucky items, then you don't understand how it works. A bullet bill usually cannot take you from 12th to even 6th if your opponents are good, and that's the best item you are likely to get.
There was this one race I was playing online that I got two coins in first, and I thought it wasn’t possible, but then I saw the person in second holding a coin, and then he used it and had another, and at every item box set for the rest of the race all anybody got was 2 coins. I think the fact that you can pull up to 4 REDS around 2-3rd at an item set while the very best first place can do is a very low (~9%) chance of two defense items with no coins for defense is very jank, even for Mario Kart standards lol.
The funny thing is that 1st place can have a 30% chance of double protection by holding a defense in the 1st slot, and getting another item. BUT this makes you susceptible to the boo 70% of the time, since your defense is in the first slot. Truly jank

People complaining about bagging should not play Mario Kart. Items are an essential method to add cretivity to the race, different strats made on the go while racing. Why would you act like its Colin Mcrae Rally? Its plain stupid.
Honestly I don't mind the amount of red shells but the chance of a defense in first should be at least the same as the percentage of getting red shells
The list of racing events where you should not always go as fast as possible is pretty misleading, though. Most of those are there to preserve either driver or vehicle. When that is not a consideration, go fast. Particularly, on the mention of #3, Formula 1 Pit Strategies, fresh tires are to ensure you don't crash and die from a blown tire going hundreds of miles per hour.
One time I did actually did get 2 coins in first place, but it was because of a weird lag situation Everyone else was frozen on the map and I was in first place, I got an item box and it kept scrolling for way longer than it should have, then it gave me 2 coins Not long after, the game kicked me out, it was really funky
Bagging in Mario Kart 8 is pretty much like playing Steve or Sonic in Smash Bros. Ultimate. Both go against whats intuitive about the game itself and everything it stands for. However, its important to remind this: Please, hate the game for allowing these playstyles to be as effective as they are, not the players who take advantage of them, given that they function really well in the meta.
I didn't know the probability for the Red Shell was that high for 2nd place. It seems like 2nd place might be the safest place to be for the majority of the race! 😅
At high level (competitive), yes. In worldwides where I play 1st place is often safer because of the varying skill level. You can get extremely far ahead by being a better driver
i feel like the people who say bagging is cheating are the same people who haven't tried it a single time. i imagine that if they did try online, they wouldn't do well at all because they don't know how to use their items.
I think the general idea on why "bagging is bad" follows thus: It doesn't exactly follow the same formula as other racing games or even past games of the series. Instead of "First = Good" it's "First = Bad". Granted there has always been the threat of blueshells, but that tended to be outdone by various mechanics such as "being really far ahead" or "holding a mushroom". Both together are tactics that encourage players to not only get into first but get as far ahead as possible. Instead the commonality and expectancy of consistent item spam combined with higher cart speeds and lack of defence in first has created this sort of feedback where you either want to be in second to have first tank blue shells or sandbag to be the and eke out a win at the last second. The second of which is considered "low floor skill" and "kind of a dick move bro I was ahead of you the whole time" despite it's effectiveness. Ergo: If it's easier for players to just be in last and spam items why be in first? Why try to go fast in a game that's normally about racing when you're just punished for it? Why be good when bagging is easier and anyone can do it semi-effectively? It's kind of annoying when "mario karting" someone is the preferred tactic, and "stealing" wins is better then "who's in first the longest". I think it would be more interesting to have a "king of the hill style" mode where all players lose points (to varying degrees) the further behind they are from first, and if you lose all your points you're eliminated. Not a "Eliminate last place" but a style of "Everyone is on the timer except first place. But you lose points slower if you're in a higher position."
Keep in mind that it's not completely patched, or removed at all, it still exists and is still very strong on tracks like cheese land It's more accurate to say that it got "nerfed" a bit, if you drive backwards or hit a box twice, you get worse items and makes it harder to do for the average player. Otherwise, its still fine

cool tip i learned: if you want to avoid getting coins while frontrunning or getting your banana/green shells/super horns booed then hold a coin in the first item slot and the second item will always be something else, keep the coin until it gets booed or you need to use your other item but you need to be fast too

The 70% Coin and 40% Red Shell is all we can complain about since bagging was removed in an update to MK8D. Well that and the fact that if you play with Items on. Who wins or looses is determined mostly by RNG.
I don't know why the people get mad from things like this, using your brain in the exam is cheating using past learned knowledge and eating out of Home is cheating your kitchen skills

I actually think getting coins is not the worst thing in the world since without them 1st can feel way more untouchable in comparison to how it feels already
Bruh people say it's cheating?? Understand that this games items are a HUGE factor in the gameplay. This game is half speed half item based, anyone who tries to say it's just speed is not understanding the game well enough. It's not cheating, it's not cheap, it's literally using half of the games mechanics to win. If you want just a speed racing game, there's other games out there. But items are a huge aspect of this game too.
I’ll say i’m a competitive Mario Kart racer, i didn’t watch any CZcams videos how to … “bagging”, more me accidentally found that method. 1 day I’m just playing around and trying to win, i usually love to start from the back in the race cause more challenging but i when i do win I’m like, “how did i win, i wasn’t even trying” I choose not to win. lol, Mandy

Although, you can actually get double coins in an online race. It is very rare and I only had it once but it happend (probably because of lag or something like that)

I think the general idea on why "bagging is bad" follows thus:
It doesn't exactly follow the same formula as other racing games or even past games of the series.

That screenshot LOL Everytime I see someone going like "a racing game where you're not trying to be in first at ALL TIMES is bad design" I'm like bruh that's not how pretty much any race works - if not any competition for that matter lol
Seriously though which actual race do you do anything comparable to this?
@@Chloethemarxenjoyer none, because racing irl doesn't give u boxes with random items like bob-ombs, blue shells, STARS, BULLET BILLS, and the F*CKING SHOCK. In other words, "kart racing" in the context of a video game is ANYTHING BUT REAL LIFE.
@@zerotimeleft I wasn't the one comparing it to real life, I was merely asking the person who did to elaborate, because it's bs.
"you can never pull 2 coins"
Lag: ima spawn brb
formula 1 mentioned 😊😊😊
The 70% Coin and 40% Red Shell is all we can complain about since bagging was removed in an update to MK8D. Well that and the fact that if you play with Items on. Who wins or looses is determined mostly by RNG.
"Bagging in 1rst place haha funny...
Wdym its not a joke?!"
"TERRAIN, TERRAIN, PULL UP *whoop whoop* BANK ANGLE, BANK ANGLE, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10"
That's why you don't use that coin right away. If you hold it, the next item is guaranteed to NOT be a coin
Woah that "I hate baggers" sounds way too close for me 😂😅😂
Thats useful thanks Shortcat!
Okay now we gotta learn how to bagg irl
I never actually bagged in first place so this is very useful. I will now be protected every time I get shocked in first.
"It was the detour that was our shortest path"-gyro zeppeli
Everytime i see this video i always have the urge to play MK8
Oh my goodness the item percent mucus so much sense, I always get red shelled if I’m in the front-
another saying in racing is "if ya ain't cheatin' ya ain't tryin'"
I don't know why the people get mad from things like this, using your brain in the exam is cheating using past learned knowledge and eating out of Home is cheating your kitchen skills
I'm glad someone Is pointing out the fact that 8's item roulette chances are extremely unfair for the top 2. why can 2nd place get triple red shells? shouldn't even be possible
As a british person i approve of this music
this is the music for the germany track
No one:
Me at 1st place "bagging" for a Horn: Gets *bomb*
I actually think getting coins is not the worst thing in the world since without them 1st can feel way more untouchable in comparison to how it feels already
Bruh people say it's cheating?? Understand that this games items are a HUGE factor in the gameplay. This game is half speed half item based, anyone who tries to say it's just speed is not understanding the game well enough. It's not cheating, it's not cheap, it's literally using half of the games mechanics to win. If you want just a speed racing game, there's other games out there. But items are a huge aspect of this game too.
Nintendo really wants Mario Kart to be chaotic, after seeing that percentage....
Getting triple red shelled back to back to back is fun in Frantic items
"Bagging is cheating"
Same players prolly complain about drift boosts too
Oh yeah, holding down the gas pedal for 2:30:00 is better than using a meta strategy unique to the game 💀
Whatever you say, antibaggers 💀💀
If 1st and 2nd each have a random item, the chance 1st gets red shelled is 28%
I’ll say i’m a competitive Mario Kart racer, i didn’t watch any CZcams videos how to … “bagging”, more me accidentally found that method. 1 day I’m just playing around and trying to win, i usually love to start from the back in the race cause more challenging but i when i do win I’m like, “how did i win, i wasn’t even trying”
I choose not to win. lol, Mandy
that % explains why i be gettn double red in 2nd so often
Thought this was gonna be about dropping out for the blue shell
Until you get shocked 1 second immediately after getting the item boxes, so you cant back up
Comparing pit stops, energy conservation, and slipstreams (a mechanic already implemented in mk8), to sitting behind for star power is hilarious cope. Can't wait for the next video about how camping in COD is actually a very fun and sportsmanlike stratgey, which emulates real life war!
THE LOOP!!!!
People who complain about bagging are just upset, because you never realize how much skill bagging takes until you try it but the pretend to take the moral high ground and never try it.
It takes less skill than 99% of other racing games but ok
@@Chloethemarxenjoyer oh gee, i didn’t know that a fucking game for children that just happens to be pretty competitive takes less skill then fucking gran turismo or forza. That’s a fucking given dude, you aren’t breaking any grounds. Just saying bagging isn’t a no skill strat.
I think actually aiming to get first and not staying behind to get items is better.
@@Skew0443 Ok but the other strategy in the game takes like 50% less than that, so...
@@superxavxii421 better in what way? Better as in you get first place more often, or you just thing bagging is stupid so frontrunning is the other option?
People thought the thunder cloud was bad in mkwii. Then they literally give us an item that is basically useless. Not to also mention that you have to worry about the boo taking your only protection if the coin is in the second slot.
I choose to complain about how boxes may as well not disappear when hit with how fast they come back
This is why Double Dash is king.
No Bullet Bill
No Coins
They should have it so thar first place gets a single banana and second place gets any number between one and three red shells like in the old days
Although, you can actually get double coins in an online race. It is very rare and I only had it once but it happend (probably because of lag or something like that)
Thanks Nintendo for making this fun
a true sigma.
Can you pls tell me the stats on you mii. Can you make a tutorial on your mii on the mushroom gorge jump
If I'm not mistaken, deluxe's distance based item system is the reason bagging is viable in the first place. All we can do is learn to bag and hope this changes in mk9 😅
No, but really Nintendo, *you better have learned something*
im glad jperm is back but dont deny it I saw scs comment on a nold video
I LOVE BAGGING!!!!!
Nice loop!
Loop was clean
Thanks Jper- I mean Shortcat!
Imagine needing an item to dodge a blue shell -this post was made by the mario kart ds community
They need to buff the first place RNG. instead of 60% chance of just getting coins...? Make it a single banana, with a 20% chance of getting coins. And a 20% chance of Banana pack!. (3-5 bananas I think.)
While bagging is a valid strat to adjust your placement and get better items, i do hate heavy bagging like in cheeseland and baby park. More than half of the room are stopping before the first set and tries to out-bag each other. It is ridiculous.
