Ik ben ooit in mijn diensttijd bij de Kon. Marine een weekend meegevaren. Een matroos bij ons aan boord werkte op een van die ZandGrint schepen. Het was laden op de Waddenzee en je lading werd in Alkmaar gelost.
I used to work on a ferry that had an 8 cylinder Fairbanks Mores engine. About 300 HP at 120 rpm. Direct reversible. But, if you were going too fast and tried to stop the engine to reverse it no way. Skippers did not like that when the dock was coming up. Rated maximum speed was 300 RPM but we never did that. I'm sure a whole lot more power.

Leuk filmpje, waar zijn ze gebleven de Nederlandse motorfabrikanten.
Langzaam lopende direct omkeerbare diesels zijn altijd een genot om naar te kijken en ze maken ook prachtige muziek als ze in bedrijf zijn.
Degelijke betrouwbare machine , trouwe zand transporter op veel Van Oord projecten.
Een pluim voor het bedrijf ,ondanks voortdurende modernisering , mag de Zagri 1 met deze prachtige Industrie gewoon in de vaart blijven.

The valves and pushrods are manually lubricated. A valve cover would be in the way.

I knew a two-cycle could be reversed but didn't know that a four-cycle could. I wonder how the turbo operated?
Yes, it used to be really popular here in europe from the 30's up until the late 70's. The turbo works just as with a normal engine. The camshaft slides over, as seen in this video, this resuts in the intake and exhaust getting different cam lobes and therefore changing direction. The intake remains the intake, end the exhaust stays exhaust.

scheepsdiesel motorenfabriek de 'Industrie', uit Alphen ad Rijn, sloot de deuren ergens rond 1980....., ik heb ze zelf mee helpen bouwen van mijn 16e tot 22e jaar. was een hele mooie tijd.
