Retro Halftone Effects in Affinity Photo That Don't Suck

  • One of my most favorite features in Affinity Photo is how easy it is to apply halftones to images, but it's almost TOO easy apparently, because so many people do it, but do not do it well.
    If you want to achieve a more authentic vintage halftone effect on your images, then you're going to want to watch this video. And just like halftones themselves, this process is super simple and quick to apply.
    I also have a decent sized, yet understated announcement, so stick around to the end for that one.

    3:08 Web search says that the most common monochromatic halftone is output in 45 degrees. While on the web, the 33 degrees came up as the angle of Masonic Freemasons' compass. There is 133 LPI (lines per inch), but it is for old magazine printing. Then there is CMYK process color separations.

    I love half tones and have a large library of eps and jpg texture files that i use in Affinity photo or designer. Im always using some sort of scuff or half tones in my work. I had no idea Affinity photo could generate half tones too.Good to know. Love the tutorial!

      Awesome, glad you got some value.
      Also, you could also use your own halftone textures with the Hard Mix blending layer. It won't be as flexible, but those may add some cool effects too. One tip would be to add a slight Gaussian blur to those textures as well.

      @@DaveConrey i usually play with blend modes to see which ends up looking best.i imported a bunch of them into affinity designers assets panel so they were easy to use ,but now it slows down how fast it opens. Im going to have to rethink that.

      Using this same process, but changing to the "lines" option in the Halftone filter instead of monochrome or color, and you might be able to pull off a woodcutting texture. Depending on the image, you'd want to play with the cell size and the angle to get the desired effect.

    Hey Dave, a noob question but - When you’re selecting the layers and the windows appear to adjust etc, should that happen or is there a setting I need to do? Doesn’t happen for me. New to photo!
    And I’m enjoying the live streams. Good stuff

    • @DaveConrey
      @DaveConrey  Před 2 lety

      Hi Neil, I’m not sure I 100% understand your question, but let me see if I get this right. When on a later, you add an adjustment layer, which brings up the dialog box for that tool. You’re making changes to it, but nothing send to happen?
      Not depending on the adjustment you’ve chosen, it could be one of a few things.
      First, Is the adjustment layer above the layer you want to alter or nested as a mask within the main layer?
      Second, is the main layer an image layer or a pixel layer. Some adjustments may not work on image layer. So if you imported a photo, it starts as an image layer. Try duplicating that layer and then rasterizing that duplicated layer, keeping the adjustment layer on top. That may change the ability of the adjustment layer.
      That also applies to vector shapes that have not been rasterized.
      There might be a couple other reasons this may be the case but let me know if this answered your question or not. If you need more clarification, make sure to @ me or CZcams won’t notify me when you’ve replied.

    Affinity halftone for me better than adobe.
    I created circle, add simple gradient, then add halftone (lines 2 with 20-30 contrast and 33 angle)next i copy it 5 times and add to each halftone +33 angle to get 198 at last one
    Super effect in less than a minute (in photoshop it's gonna take a little bit longer)

    Is it possible to paint in Affinity Photo using textures? I’ve seen a lot of a Photoshop videos showing how to turn a 2D image into something that looks three-dimensional by using textures. But I haven’t seen any Affinity Photo videos that show how this type of artwork can be created in Affinity Photo. Is this possible to do in Affinity Photo? Does Affinity Photo have the same tools as Photoshop for creating these types of images?

    • @DaveConrey
      @DaveConrey  Před 3 lety +1

      Unfortunately there is no pattern brush, so you can’t paint a solid texture, but you can make brushes from textures.

    • @chariots8x230
      @chariots8x230 Před 3 lety

      @@DaveConrey Thank you for letting me know! I have to look more into this because I’m not exactly sure how the pattern brush works in Photoshop and how it’s different from painting textures with brushes in Affinity. But I think it looks very cool how 2D images can be turned into 3D by using Photoshop. It would be amazing if Affinity adds this feature because I’d definitely love to try it, since it’s a type of art that really interests me.
