So I joined a "serious" lobby as Italy. The host (Germany player) pulled me into a channel and started asking me very specific questions, such as: which focusses do you do in which order, how many factories do you put on this, what divisions do you make, what do u do with ur navy etc etc etc. I passed his test (I first had to convince him that naval bombers too can destroy ships) and the game started. At 39 he declared war on France, couldn't break the frontline, got pushed back & capitulated.

@@MrFusion dunno about hoi, but in most rts a good build order is needed to even have fighting chance. That said who the fuck cares if a player fails and you gotta carry. such is life. I have nver seen any trashtalking in SCII team MP in about 500matches.
@@egoalter1276 This was back when big competitive multiplayer was still a thing for Hoi4. Now it more or less is a dead scene or at least is few and far between. Point is your dedicating around 5-6 hours of game time if not more. 4 of those hours being small build up events/check points where it leads to ww2 and other major fronts like Africa or the Eastern front. Literally the game will derail if these requirements aren't met because the other team can easily exploit and amplify that deficiency. It literally was that make it or break it and obviously no one wants to have wasted time because one of those key components needed fails to deliver. Especially a major. Also back then and I wouldn't be surprised now Hoi4 has been plagued with technical problems when it comes to large multiplayer matches. So we either require the use of a mod, have to rehost or wait for some to join etc. etc. which just builds up and refines a community that has a very low tolerance for fucking up.

HOI4 community in a nutshell.
find a good ecommunity to teach you. im part of a kr community and we are very welcoming to new players and acually try to give advice. this type of elitism is so frowned upon in our group that the few who do it are disliked so much barely anyone wants to play in a faction with them :p
I'm actually surprised that I wasn't the only one that felt that this existed. I picked up the game around 2017 and played single player for a few months till I got bored of single player. Only to realize that multiplayer was a complete hell hole. It took literal hours to wait for people to join. Doesn't help when the host has a manual book of rules. The WORST part of it all was that if u broke (even accidentally) a single rule or were not a significant major (Germany, UK, Russia, USA, Japan) then they'd treat u like shit. All minors must bow down to their daddy Stalin, Hitler, or Chamberlain
Got tired of it and quit the game for half a year cause of ppls bs. It just ruins it when you spend hours waiting and looking for a game just to be kicked half way through cause you didn't follow the meta.
People take this game wayyy too seriously. It is possible to just fuck around and have fun.
Thus I host my own games when I play multiplayer.
If people wanna kill the elitism just don't join their rooms.

I remember there was this one time I played as France and was my first time, and UK was leading the allies. The beginning was fine, didn't started building bunkers as I should, but still got on time to have a good border with Germany. Then UK said he would protect the my Coast in the North, and I was like "Ok, makes sense" so I moved all my Navy to the Mediterranean where they wrecked the Italian Navy.
Germany starts war, and everything was going very well, until suddenly German troopers started storming my Northern Coast. In a nutshell, I got fucked because my troops didn't had supplies and got surrendered, and UK decided to blame me for his bs.
I totally agree with the overall message of this video. I remember two months after hoi4 was released I didn't really like the game compared to hoi3 but I still had 300 hours. I joined a few multiplayer games and they ticked me off from playing multiplayer forever. Some of the more casual games were fine and fun, but when I joined some discord-only games they had the most elitist beta cucks in there known to man.
I had 1000~ hours in hoi3 which is a much harder game that requires much more thinking and strategy and micro, and these guys who sit at their computers all day and play hoi4 while jerking off start telling me I can't "play a major". These guys, from my experience through multiple discords, sit down and don't talk for about 4 hours thinking about which tech to research next while ignoring/telling off anyone who tries to make passing conversation. The worst part is that it's not only like these guys are extremely elite. Sure, they know the meta and it's been a few years now so I'm sure it's developed, but hoi4 is a damn simple game and all they have to do is optimize a few elements to call themselves elite. Every time I played the people not restricted to playing minors fucked up horribly with more than a 1000 hours and after 4 hours of boring grind, Germany ragequits after an encirclement and the war ends while I'm building up with my 48 divisions.
These people also are largely terrible at micro. Some hoi3 pro I can respect because although they might sit around all day and play video games, they at least can micro the entire operation Barbarossa on 2 speed without stopping while managing their country. Every time I occasionally hop into a server, I always win the Spanish Civil War if I snag a major. It's ridiculous how bad people are, they use battle plans and accidentally leave their rears weekly defended. For me, my experience with the hoi4 community has just been 4 hours of toxic elitism and boredom before someone fucks up and you have no fun. I know that's just my experience, but I'm glad that you also share in some of my frustrations, Tommy.
I played thousands of hours from hoi1 to hoi4 and i would never be so arrocunt as to claim that hoi4 is simple. Perhaps the way that you play it is...

@@TheBelrick The stack moving made for a more in depth game because people better organized where and how they were going to attack, you could make 3 spearheads instead of just having one lame tank push. Additionally, the air war was much more in depth in general, much more control. You could also prioritise your elite divisions for upgrade. There were also a ton more map modes including weather, allowing you to better decide when to attack. The supply system had individual province supply and infustructure, allowing you to cut supplies along certain high infrastructure junctions to cut off supply rather than having to completely cut someone off, much more realistic. Those are just some of the things off the back of my head.

I tried a serious hoi4 game and wow it's exhausting just trying to get the thing started, vetting people to make sure they're good as each nation and being told how to play each of your nations, so basically I'm not allowed to play, it's someone else trying to snatch my mouse to do it for me because it's the current "meta" or I'll be kicked

At some point you're going to have to move on from regularly playing HOI4 multiplayer, but I'm sure that no matter what game you play, you will still produce some of the best content in my subscription box.

Since everyone is talking about their experience, I'll say mine:
So essentially last year I got Hoi4 and I was scheduled to play a game. I joined the VC. People were talking. Fine, right? I then asked a few questions, when the game would start etc, when someone said "You sound really young" I was 13 at the time and yes, I do sound young. I was being calm and explaining to them I was 13, and they said they would kick me because I was four years old. I kept trying to stay calm, but they ended up banning me from the server. I realized how toxic the community was and then decided not to do multiplayer again.
Fast forward many months later, where I got much better at the game. I decided to give Hoi4 MP again because, 1: my voice is deeper now, and 2: I ultimately decided I was competent to play a MP game.
So essentially, I was playing as Siam, and I was in a VC with the co ops of Japan. They seemed nice, not mentioning my voice, and understanding that I wasn't very good. They did give me some advice and helped me understand how to play a minor nation. However, they weren't completely nice. Sometimes they would get mad at me or overreact if I wasn't getting things done at their pace. For and example, I remember, they were invading China as usual. I was called into the war. I sent a few divisions as usual. Later, I sent more divisions into the Chinese front. While doing this they acquired Indochina somehow. I was sending them through the ocean as china and Siam weren't connected. After they got it, they rushed me and lightly yelled at me to send it through there because it was quicker, but my divs were literally in the ocean. Another occassion was when early on I accidentally unpaused the game, and then some Scottish guy came in the VC and started yelling at me. Thankfully the other people in the VC told him to calm down, and he untimately did.
So essentially, if your alright with people yelling at you for small mistakes, then Hoi4 MP is fine for you. As for the actual gameplay, it really feels more like a chore rather then actually playing a country. The Hoi4 community has some nice people, but a lot of random professional Scottish middle aged men that will yell at you for the smallest thing.
I wish this video came out before I attempted my first MP games... :(

My favourite time a try hard tried to talk down to me was when he claimed I didn't know what I was doing when I said I intended to go all out in naval bombers as Australia.. And then later on the guy who he picked instead of me did the same thing and rekt him while he was Playing Japan. Also the same guy lost to China once as a "Japan main" and made it a server rule that China *had* to capitulate after that...
But Redd "can defeat Italy with New Zealand" apparently doesn't know how to use unorthodox strategy to take down tryhards.

I played ‘competitive’ and i just got so tired this community is pure cringe. honestly just don’t touch mp, even though i am hypocritical of this if your new you’ll just be told this and that and one fuck up and u get kicked. The ‘meta’ is just a boring book u have to follow to win but just learn the game by testing out compositions and looking at the stats and how the stats affect a battle. get ur irl friends to play and you’ll have way more fun than 500 hours in shitty mp. The only fun i’ve found in mp is after 4-6 hours of buildup(1936-1939ish which takes long bc it’s on 3-4 speed) where i meet a random cool guy and we’d pull a gulf war on someone and completely annihilate a person. but that’s rare so yeah

Happened to me recently. We were playing a non historical game, anything goes, we even specified that we would be allowing newer players, as long as they know the very basics. I was on germany and a lot of sweats joined the axis and they wanted me to go historical, even tho it was a non hist game. I decided i will stay facist and try and sitll play somewhat historically because my team was crying so much. Our hungary was super toxic despite this being a noob friendly game. At the start we had major lag problems, we couldnt even start the game. Hungary was flaming the host hard, he was saying shit like “this host is so fucking braindead, shitter living in the middle of nowhere!!” I told him that he is from the UK and he went “yeah in the middle of fucking nowhere!” There were only 2 players from America, and the rest of us were European...... shortly after he left the game and the game suddenly ran smooth. France was also picked by a toxic tryhard and he decided to deny me sudetenland, and then gobble up as much land as he possibly could and attacked spain. He was trash talking too, but then i saw the prompt to invite spain to my faction and the maginot line was unguarded, i invited them and blitzed into France capping him instantly. Then i was flamed so hard, they said i was game ruining, a retard, im not allowed to attack France. Bruh it was an ahistorical game where everything was allowed, its not my fault that the sweater didnt guard his border. He then switched to spain, because they had all the warscore as i literally just walked in. He played and tried to beat me and lost again and then left.....

i have a feeling that every single major out there just doesnt move their fucking troops, they create a frontline and leave that shit till the end of the game hoping for the minors to push out and encircle
also, i am a league player. the league community really is bad but the thing is, riot bans people who are way to toxic while there is nothing u can really do to prevent them from saying whatever the fuck they want to u here since they cant get banned. For the 3 years ive been playing league i havent seen anyone repeatedly toxic game after game. Considering i am in diamond 5 rank which would be a little under top 1% of the players i get matched with the same people quite often and they have extremely different attitudes every game(for better or for worse). People will tell u to switch off a certain champion if they dont like it, which is fine and u have the option to not listen to them and get blamed for it if u do bad or u can listen to them and blame them because they forced a pick that u arent comfortable with while here in hoi4 u will get blamed for shit cuz u are constantly streaming and people will remember every single mistake u do but u have no proof of them making a mistake and even if u do they will just ignore it and say how u will get stream sniped so it will ruin the game for the others
The reason why MP HOI4 sucks is the cancer rulesets that forces players down the same fucking path.
